Happy 100 Birthday, Eleanore! th

Oneg Honoring Eleanore Rubinstein Friday, April 19, 6:00 PM Pollin Chapel/Lipman Foyer It is with great pleasure that we invite the congregation to join in celebration on Friday, April 19th for a champagne oneg immediately following Shabbat Services in honor of Eleanore Rubinstein’s 100th birthday.

Eleanore is a long-time member of Congregation Beth Israel. She is a proud member of the 1927 Confirmation Class, the year before our current sanctuary was dedicated. She and her classmates were sad to miss celebrating in the new sanctuary! Eleanore and her husband Paul raised their family (son Dick and daughters Diane, Carolyn, and Sandy) at CBI. Over the

years, she has cherished watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren also nurture their Jewish lives and celebrate their lifecycle events here at CBI. This is a five-generation family, with four generations still actively involved at CBI. In addition to all of her family activities, Eleanore has been a devoted community volunteer, avid knitter, national tennis champion in her 90s, and is still a weekly bridge player and passionate golfer. As her e-mail address reads, “ebusygal” – a busy gal!

Eleanore, thank you for your generous and long-time support of CBI. You are an inspiration for all of us with your commitment to family, tikkun olam, and social justice. It is with great pride that we celebrate Eleanore and her 100th birthday.

River Charles Wolf River Wolf will become Bar Mitzvah on April 13, 2013. He is the son of Marla Rabau and Keith Wolf and is the younger brother of Adrienne Butzer and Seth Breiman. River attends Fowler Middle School in Tigard. For his Mitzvah Project he has spent the past year and a half collecting cans and bottles to return for deposit money, which he’s used to purchase 64 pairs of pajamas for the children in the Washington County Foster Program. River came to his parents through this program and has chosen to give back to them in this way.

Jesse Alexandra Mandel Jesse Mandel will become Bat Mitzvah on April 20, 2013. She is the daughter of Laura Mlyn and Neil Mandel and the younger sister of Elijah. Jesse is a student at Beaumont Middle School. She has selected the Portland Women’s Crisis Line for her Mitzvah Project. This organization shelters women who are victims of domestic and sexual violence. Jesse is collecting donations of money and hygiene supplies for the agency. Her goal is to make people aware of what is going on in Portland and how they can help these women meet their basic needs. To learn more, please visit their website: www.pwcl.org.

Blumenauer believes the Farm Bill is the most important environmental legislation – and the second most important health-related legislation (next to ObamaCare) that Congress considers. He will outline a series of steps for transforming the Farm Bill into a “Food Bill” and suggest actions that people may take to help.

Samuel Willman Samuel Willman will become Bar Mitzvah on April 27, 2013. He is the son of Ben Willman and Erin Flynn and the younger brother of Elias Willman. Sam attends Winterhaven School, an accelerated K-8 program focusing on math, science, and technology. For his Mitzvah Project, Sammy is working with Snowcap Community Charities, a non-profit agency helping low-income families. Sammy’s hockey team adopted a family with three children that could not afford holiday presents. Last December, Sammy organized his line in buying and delivering presents to their home: www.snowcap.org.

th ~ Mitzvah Day 2013 May 5 We Need to Act - Help to Heal the World - One Good Deed at a Time Are you a Tzadik?

by Rachel L. Joseph Assistant Rabbi For the past several months, an amazingly talented group of us has been meeting to plan our annual Mitzvah Day event on May 5, 2013. One of our guiding principles has been, “Every day is Mitzvah Day,” and May 5th is a celebration of the tzedakah we do as a community throughout the year. Every day, we are commanded to engage in acts of justice, tzedakah.

The Hebrew word tzedakah comes from the root word tzedek, which means not charity but justice. Tzedakah is justice in action.

We have a responsibility to give, not because we are or ought to be kind and not because we feel guilty that we have achieved whatever we may have achieved. Engaging in tzedakah is the right thing to do, the righteous thing to do. From a Jewish perspective, it is as simple as that.

There are dozens of stories about the prophet Elijah, who we are told will predict the messianic age. In these stories, he comes to us in the disguise of a homeless beggar on the street. In many of them, he is treated badly, and so the coming of the messianic age is delayed. In most of these tales, he is assisted by righteous souls who share whatever they might have and are then rewarded with what they truly need.

These are simple stories on the surface: treat the beggar like the sign of the messiah because you never know what good might come. And yet beneath these stories is a much deeper lesson on life. Elijah comes in these stories as an aid to the righteous, and the giving of tzedakah is the simplest of tests. A “righteous soul,” a tzadik, gives tzedakah even when there may be no benefit in the giving. The question Elijah comes to ask us is simply this: “Are you a tzadik? Are you a righteous soul?”

The challenge we face in the modern age is to recognize this value, the righteousness of righteous deeds, even when there may be no immediate benefit for us. With each act of tzedek, or justice, we stand in the presence of the Divine. Perhaps this mitzvah day we will meet Elijah, or perhaps we might begin something greater still. Perhaps we will become Elijah and together become heralds of a better age. Every day is Mitzvah Day; every day is an opportunity to be a tzadik doing acts of tzedakah.

The Social Action Committee invites you to join us on May 5th when we will come together as a congregation for a very special day. Everyone is invited to gather for breakfast in Blumauer Auditorium at 8:45 AM to meet one another and enjoy a rousing social justice-themed song session and kick-off event with our clergy and congregants about tikkun olam and the important role each of us can play in making this a better world. Then we will be off to improve the lives of others.

With great support from our religious school, there will be a wide selection of projects, each of which will give you the opportunity to help heal the world, including: @@ Make placemats to brighten the day for Loaves & Fishes meal recipients @@ Make blankets to be used at Janus Youth Programs’ emergency/shortterm shelter @@Provide a meal for those in need through our SoupSac program @@Volunteer at the Sunshine Pantry in Beaverton @@Throw a birthday party for the residents of the Northwest Tower @@Create gardens with Lift Urban Portland and at CBI @@ Provide brunch and nutritional information at Stepping Stones transitional housing for women and their children @@Clean up our neighborhood @@Beautify our cemetery @@Sing for the residents of the Robison Home Watch the weekly email blasts for details about these and other events.

While each class in the religious school will have a focused event, the students and their parents may select another activity, that of a sibling’s class, or one that better speaks to their interests.

We are also asking you to bring food donations for Sunshine Pantry and donations of clean, usable furniture and basic household items for the Community Warehouse.

You will also have the opportunity to donate blood to the Red Cross.

This Month in Jerusalem

by Stuart Chestler President, CBI Board of Trustees By the time you receive this newsletter, millions of Jews the world over will be in the midst of their Passover celebrations.

Those millions of Jews will read aloud from the Haggadah, “Next year in Jerusalem!” However, over 30 members of Congregation Beth Israel will also get to say, “This month in Jerusalem!”

My wife and I are looking forward to joining fellow congregants as together we all embark upon a journey—both physical and spiritual— with our beloved clergy as our guides throughout the Land of Israel. To paraphrase Dr. Seuss, “Oh, the places we’ll go.” Believe it or not, there is still time to join your fellow CBI congregants and clergy on this trip of a lifetime. But if you really cannot join us this year, be sure to follow along as we blog our adventures on the CBI web site. Then join us on Sunday, May 19 at 10:30 AM in Goodman Hall for an Israeli Brunch and presentation by Natalie Nahome, Portland’s new Shlichah (Israeli emissary), as she shares the latest food trends, traditional foods, and favorite recipes from Israel. There will also be a slide show of top moments of this year’s CBI Israel trip.

Education Thriving through Early Childhood Education

by Ben Sandler Education Director If one measure of dedication, interest, and joy from being a part of CBI is how many times you walk through our doors each week, then our preschool students are certainly leading the way.

These kids have it good! The very best our community has to offer we give to the youngest among us. What a wonderful statement. Students in our Early Childhood Education (ECE) Program inquire, investigate, explore, and play in our most updated classrooms. The environment plays a major role in learning, and our classrooms are maintained daily and with care by our facilities staff in order to be ready for the next school day after a heavy regimen of dancing feet, paint, and lots of glitter projects. Our clergy lead a weekly Shabbat service for the kids filled with stories and songs. You think our rabbis’ stories are good at our monthly Shir Shabbat services?

It’s during the preschool service each week when they break out the BIG fun, including hand marionettes on Purim, musical instruments and sound effects, and stories that stretch the imagination and bring Jewish values into the hearts and minds of the kids. Music is everywhere. From the songs they sing when transitioning to the next project in the classroom (“It’s clean up time and everybody helps” is a favorite of our faculty and facilities staff ) to the original music of Beth Hamon during the preschool Shabbat Service.

We want the very best for our children, and over the course of this year, new ECE Director Deborah Kaplan and the preschool faculty have been providing an amazing learning environment for our students, an environment where children explore, investigate, feel safe, build friendships, and are part of a kehillah kedosha, a holy community. When we give new families tours of the school, we ask, “What are you looking for in a preschool?” We have a unique situation here at Beth Israel, for our preschool is not only a State Certified Center with experienced and knowledgeable faculty that collaborate, inspire, and support all learners, we are also rooted in best practices, and offer our students and young families an experience and community that supports the whole child. Together with parents and home Jewish rituals, our school hallways are the beginning of a Jewish journey – one that we hope will lead them to lives full of meaning, joy, and responsibility.

This year, our monthly Saturday Tot Shabbat services with Kim Palumbis, our clergy, and ECE staff have been extremely well attended.

Following the service, we always have a lovely kiddush/oneg of fruit, veggies, and cheeses along with a crafts project for the kids and a chance for families to meet and connect. If you know of a family who would enjoy this experience, please invite them to this monthly service on the first Saturday of each month at 9:30 AM in Pollin Chapel.

Each month, we have a special ECE Sunday program for young kids and families, generally around the theme of a Jewish Holiday. These programs are a great way for new families and families with young kids not attending our weekday program to have a wonderful community experience and to experience CBI for the first time.

Our Education and Youth committee, along with the professional staff, have developed goals for our Early Childhood Education over the coming years. We want to continue to provide high quality and affordable early childhood education and programming for children and families. We want families to continue the Jewish journey through Temple affiliation and religious school for their children through grade 12. We want to increase our enrollment in the weekday preschool program and increase support for young families through community connection.

Opportunities for families to travel on this Jewish journey include events ranging from social action to holiday celebrations. Word of mouth continues to be the best way for families to learn about what we do here in the world of Early Childhood Education. All proceeds from this affordable friend-raiser and fundraiser go towards the Beth Israel Preschool, so that we can continue to offer our families the very best. Developing CBI Developing CBI

Writer and explorer Dan Buettner has spent his life traveling the world in search of answers. His travels around the world inspired him to discover and name the globe’s “blue zones,” the countries and societies with the longest life expectancy, the greatest happiness, and other strengths. His newest book, Thrive, focuses on happiness in the “blue zones” and how everyone can attain a better quality of life by following the happiest countries’ examples.

It is no surprise that his research found that with each happy friend we add to our social circle, our own happiness grows by 9%. Statistics also

show that giving feels good and that givers tend to be happier people; those who give their money away report being happier than those who spend it on themselves. In fact, research shows that altruism stimulates the same pleasure centers in the brain that sugar does – and it is certainly lots healthier for you.

Finally, research shows that people who belong to a faith-based community and attend services more than once a week live as many as seven years longer than people who don’t. In addition, affiliated members are believed to be satisfied with less money, experience less stress, and have a built-in social network. Plus, belonging to a faith community gives you a built-in opportunity to volunteer, which adds to your happiness factor.

Imagine finding all these elements that contribute to happiness right here at Congregation Beth Israel, proving yet again that being involved at CBI makes you THRIVE. Things are developing here all the time.

WRJ/BI Sisterhood Fabulous Purim Happy Hour The Beth Israel Sisterhood’s Purim Happy Hour was fabulous! Thank you to Shelly Levy for arranging such a fun event. And thank you to our clergy, all of our current “sisters,” and our soon-to-be new “sisters” who attended. It was fun and delicious, and we had an extremely friendly crowd. Everyone kept asking, “Will we do this again next year?” Of course we will!

It’s that time again! Beth Israel Sisterhood’s annual plant and bake sale, Treasures in Bloom, is back, bigger and better than ever. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. The proceeds from this annual sale benefit our religious school.

Child Trafficking Forum

Lives go wrong when things are loved and people used.”

Our child trafficking program was very powerful, and the ripple effect from the program is “social action advocacy” at its best.

So when it’s time to buy plants, skip the big box stores - no one ever learned a lick of Hebrew in a big box store. Give your plant purchases meaning – shop Treasures in Bloom and support our religious school!

The forum educated us about what is being done to help the victims and punish the abusers at the federal level, from a law enforcement perspective, from a rehabilitation representative, and from a project that includes dance workshops for victims of sexual trafficking and sexually exploited children.

Cookies for Our Kids - Bakers Needed Cookies, cupcakes, brownies, cake pops, whoopee pies – what do you like to make? We need your home-baked treats for our bake sale on April 28. The bake sale is held in conjunction with the Treasures in Bloom plant sale. Proceeds benefit our religious school. Purim Packages for College Students On February 19, Stephanie Siegel, Shelly Levy and Kathleen Doctor prepared and mailed 82 Purim care packages for our CBI college student members. We included hamantaschen, a Purim mask, ramen noodle soup, and a gummy fruit snack pack. Also enclosed were a letter from the Rabbi and a letter from the Sisterhood college outreach committee.

In addition to our college students, we now have a military member on our list! Josh Silver is in basic training and is not allowed to receive packages yet. The rabbi sent him a personal greeting, and Kathleen sent him a letter letting him know he will be on our list for future mailings.

Our speakers, Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici and Deputy Keith Bickford of OATH (Oregonians Against Trafficking Humans), gave informative presentations, addressing questions with pragmatic answers and empowering so many of us to action. A representative from Janus Youth Programs discussed the problem and how they are on the frontline offering direct care for victims of sex trafficking. The Agnieszka Laska Dancers left everyone stunned and shaken at the end of their dance “Broken Flower.”

One of my favorite lines in the Hagaddah states, “In each generation, everyone needs to look at himself/herself as if he/she came out of Egypt.” The rabbis were very wise and insightful – even today the story of slavery is still alive.

2013 Oseran Family Lecture E.J. Dionne, Jr.: “Personal Faith and Public Policy” Sunday, May 5 5:00 PM CBI Sanctuary CBI is pleased to welcome E.J. Dionne, Jr. as the 2013 Oseran Family Lecturer. Mr. Dionne is a long-time op-ed columnist for The Washington Post, writing twice a week on national politics and policy. He is a University Professor at Georgetown University and a senior fellow at The Brookings Institution. Dionne has been a frequent commentator on politics for National Public Radio, ABC’s “This Week,” and NBC’s “Meet the Press.” His book Why Americans Hate Politics (1991) won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and was a National Book Award nominee. His most recent book is Souled Out: Reclaiming Faith & Politics After the Religious Right (2008).

The Oseran Family Fund was established in 2008 to provide annual lectures with a socially responsible Jewish theme. Past lecturers have included U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon, and author and national correspondent Jeffrey Goldberg.
