B’nei Mitzvah Eliana Sarah Schwartz Eliana Sarah Schwartz became Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, October 15. Eliana is the daughter of Shoshanna Lansberg and Jeffrey Schwartz and the older sister of Gabriela and Aaron Schwartz. She loves theater and filmmaking and is an 8th Grader at the Arts & Communication Magnet Academy. For her Mitzvah Project, Eliana will collect donations for the Sunshine Pantry (www.sunshinepantry.org), an organization that provides food, amenities, housewares, and clothing to people in need from all over Oregon and Southwest Washington.

Sophie Dale Wand Sophie Dale Wand became Bat Mitzvah on October 22. She is the daughter of Jordan and Gina, and the proud older sister of Lily. Sophie is an 8th grader at Catlin Gabel School and has been a CBI community member since she was three years old. For her Mitzvah Project, Sophie chose to combine her thirst for knowledge with her love of children by volunteering and working on projects at KairosPDX, a non-profit charter school within the Portland Public School system committed to eliminating racial, achievement, and opportunity gaps.

Jacob Feldman Jacob Colton Feldman became Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, October 29. Jacob is the son of Louis and Risa Feldman, brother of Noah Feldman, and grandson of Janet and Jack Feldman (of Downers Grove, IL) and Marcia and Jerry (z’l) Colton (of Gresham, OR). He is a seventh grader at Cedar Park Middle School. For his Mitzvah Project, Jacob has decided to continue his longstanding tradition of gathering “new” stuffed animals for the children who are spending time at the Ronald McDonald Houses of Portland and Southwest Washington. Many years ago, Jacob chose to forgo birthday gifts and collect donations; this will be his seventh year of working with The Ronald McDonald House. During the year, he seeks out and purchases stuffed animals for the children who often face difficult medical challenges. The opportunity to pick a new ‘friend’ to help them through these difficult times can be priceless.

Devin Von Arx Devin Von Arx will become Bat Mitzvah on November 5. A student at Lake Oswego Junior High, she is working with the Philip Foster Farm Historic Site for her Mitzvah Project. The Philip Foster Farm Historic Site preserves, promotes, and interprets Oregon history, focusing on the Oregon Trail and pioneer life. They serve a wide audience of school field trips, general public, and retirement center field trips. Devin is working to improve event and field trip experiences for visitors to the site to help people better enjoy and appreciate history.

Noah Schoenbaum Noah Schoenbaum will become Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, November 12. Noah is the son of Dan and Tricia Schoenbaum and brother of Emma, age 11. Noah is a new member at Congregation Beth Israel and a 7th Grader at Lake Oswego Junior High School. Noah and his family very recently moved (back) to Lake Oswego after spending five years in Woodside, California. Noah is an avid soccer player and also enjoys a variety of other sports including snowboarding, basketball and football. He also enjoys reading, traveling, boating and X-box. Noah is looking forward to spending the remainder of his 7th grade year planning and executing a Mitzvah Project to support the availability of sports to underprivileged children.

Emma Rae Snell Emma Rae Snell will become Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, November 19. Emma is the daughter of Michelle and Joe Snell and younger sister of Shaena . Her grandparents are Nick and Sanny Snell of Portland, Oregon, Gail Taback of Kirkland, Washington and Harvey Taback (z’l). She is proud to be a third generation member of Congregation Beth Israel. Emma is a 7th Grader at Cedar Park Middle School. For her Mitzvah Project, Emma and her friends volunteered with Project Lemonade. Project Lemonade supports and promotes confidence in foster youth. Each August youth ages five through twenty shop for free back to school clothes in their pop-up shop. Each foster youth chooses his or her own new or nearly new outfits, accessories and shoes.

Ani Rose Posner Ani Posner will become Bat Mitzvah on November 26. Ani is the daughter of Jason Posner and Lisa Rockower, and big sister to Kira. Ani is a student at Robert Gray Middle School. She has spent time since the beginning of the 5th grade volunteering weekly at Bridlemile Elementary School with the great kids in Room 7, the special education classroom. This is an ongoing Mitzvah Project for Ani, who loves spending time with these wonderful students and teachers.

2016 EVENTS

Ahava Reads

Jewish Book Celebration is open to everyone! Events are free unless otherwise noted.

Bob Kravitz, CBI congregant and docent at the National Museum of American Jewish History, will walk us through a lesser-known facet of the American Jewish experience. In 1654, Jewish history in America began with the first settlement in New Amsterdam, and to this day, many believe that the “authentic” American Jewish experience remains at heart a New York story. In this program, we will look more broadly the ways that place and opportunity shaped the experiences of Jewish migrants as Americans and as Oregonians in an expanding nation. We’ll address topics as wide ranging as the role of the Jewish peddler in frontier America and the part that Jewish Oregonians played in shaping communities, institutions, and identities. Sharing of personal family histories is encouraged.

Developing CBI Come Together NOW by Jenat Levison Feldman Development Director In true CBI tradition, many of our most loyal and generous donors Came Together on September 18 for our annual fall fundraiser. With the enthusiasm of Chairs Bianca and Tony Urdes and the support of Development Chair David Goldwyn, the CBI Development Committee and Come Together Committee volunteers, this event raised over $230,000! In addition to an evening filled with wonderful music by Britishmania, the Urdes, Alina Aliyar and David Bean shared personal stories highlighting how Congregation Beth Israel has impacted their lives. It is these CBI tales that truly reveal how special our community is and the difference getting that engaged and involved can make.

So many of us have CBI tales to tell: just ask the over three hundred children currently enrolled in our Religious School. Ask the sixty-five youth in our NIFTY program or the thirty-seven Madrichim teaching and tutoring the next generation while learning how exciting it is to get their first pay checks. Join the over four hundred people attending one of our creative and innovative family services for the High Holy days or any of the nine Shabbat on the Plaza services we held this past summer. All of these experiences are made possible by the funding we raise through our Every Family Initiative (EFI) campaign as well as our two major fun(d)raisers. But wait – there are more programs and services your generosity makes possible. Hinenu, CBI’s outreach and engagement task force, is just one example. The forty-five leaders already engaged and involved are waiting for you to say: Here I am; count me in. Now is the time to get involved – it will make a difference in your life and the life of others. CBI is truly proud to continually offer ways for us to Come Together. The choice is now yours. CHOOSE to get involved; contact me to find out how. (503) 222-1069 or jen@bethisrael-pdx.org.

Sisterhood

Sisterhood Care Packages The Sisterhood College Communications Committee wants to send your US-based military or college student a care package this Chanukah! Member children in college, graduate school, professional educational programs and military service are included. We let them know we’re thinking of them and wishing them well while they’re away. The students love getting our Chanukah and Purim packages filled with the Jewish Mother’s version of the care package - packets of soup and cocoa, dreidels and gelt, or hamentashen and groggers. We include a student directory, a note from Rabbi Cahana, and anything else we think might interest or benefit them. We also slip in a Starbucks gift card when possible. We’re updating our mailing list for Chanukah and need your help. Parents please contact Kathleen Doctor by November 7, at KathleenDoctor@me.com with the following: • • • • • •

Hineinu

Hineinu: We are here, together! Hineinu

Through , Congregation Beth Israel seeks to strengthen our community and recognize the kedusha (sanctity) of one another. Working together, both inside and outside the dome, we can create opportunities for our congregants to find connection and support from our community. We are saying, “We are here, together!”

Hineinu is a commitment to making a difference, to being part of a community that not only nurtures the individual soul, but also awakens in us a sense of connectedness to and responsibility for one another. CBI is our home and our community. But it is only a community if WE are willing to say, “Hineinu, we are here!” and act to make it so.

Hineinu is how we will come together to foster and nourish our community, by expanding our efforts to engage in

acts of bikkur cholim, taking care of the sick, cooking meals for one another in times of need, becoming ambassadors of the congregation, welcoming the stranger. By creating opportunities to connect with one another for support, we will build relationships and strengthen our Jewish identity.

Have a special occasion coming up? Now you can celebrate that birthday, adoption, engagement, anniversary - any simcha your can think of - at CBI. Let our Celebrations Corps make it happen! To join the Celebrations Corps, or for more information, please contact Celebrations@bethisrael-pdx.org.

Families

Our mission is to help families connect through grade-level celebrations, community events, parent groups and holiday happenings. Put your great ideas to good use and join us! Contact Families@bethisrael-pdx.org.

8

We have two adult cohorts - a 50+ group and a 30’s to 50 group – providing fun, creative, and meaningful opportunities to come together for outings and cultural events at CBI and in the community. Plan and play with us! For more information, please contact Adults@bethisrael-pdx.org.

The Caring Community is dedicated to Bikkur Cholim, repairing the world, by providing support, comfort and connection to those in need while building community within CBI. Here’s how: Neighborhood Circles: Neighborhood Circles organize community events – potlucks, hikes, ice-cream socials, Havdalahs - so you can connect with CBI members who live near you. And if a need arises for a CBI member in your neighborhood, an email is sent from the CBI office with a request for help. Help if you can, but if you can’t, perhaps someone else can… and there’s always a next time. Neighborhood Circle Havdalah, November 5: Neighborhood Circles will host Havdalah gatherings across Portland. It’s a great opportunity to meet and connect with other CBI members in your Neighborhood Circle and make plans for more get-togethers. Shiva and Bereavement Committee: This group is forming to help congregants who’ve suffered a loss by making shiva arrangements, and providing meals and support. For more information, please contact CaringCommunity@bethisrael-pdx.org.

Over Veterans Day Weekend, a container of flags will be centrally located adjacent to Landau Chapel at the Beth Israel Cemetery. Families coming to visit may take a flag so they can personally place it on the grave in tribute to their loved ones. Shabbat From Our Dome To Your Home

Imagine how incredible it will be for our congregation

when on one specific night 850 families share Shabbat, make connections, and create community in the homes of our congregants.

Imagine all of us doing the same thing - reconnecting

with old friends, connecting with new friends, connecting spiritually - as together we explore the meaning of Shabbat.

Be a part of the biggest Shabbat in CBI’s history. Be

together as we all light the candles, say the prayers, enjoy the Shabbat food and each other’s company.

On Friday, February 3, we are asking all of our

congregants to participate in Shabbat in our homes - either as a host or a guest. Bring our children and grandchildren and all experience the joys of Shabbat together.

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2017 No worries if you haven’t had Shabbat in your home. Whether you know a little or a lot, join us over the winter at our classes on the meaning of Shabbat, the how-to of creating a Shabbat table, doing the blessings, making the challah and learning to cook both Ashkenazi and Sephardic Shabbat meals. We encourage you share your Shabbat stories and enjoy the night with your community. We encourage you to host or attend a Shabbat dinner on February 3. Invite your friends, a few or many whatever works for you - and include congregants who will become your new friends. There will be a place at the Shabbat table for everyone.

For more information, visit www.bethisrael-pdx.org or email hineinu@bethisrael-pdx.org
