CSG

Research in Social Sciences and Management CSG - Research in Social Sciences and Management is a research unit hosted by the Lisbon School of Economics & Management (ISEG), an institution dedicated to teaching and research, which was founded in 1911 and is now part of Universidade de Lisboa, the largest university in Portugal. CSG is a recent research unit, created in 2013 by the joining of four of ISEG’s research centres:SOCIUS (Research Centre in Economic and Organisational Sociology), ADVANCE (Centre for Advanced Research in Management), CEsA (Research Centre on Africa, Asia and Latin America) and GHES (Economic and Social History Research Unit). These centres decided to establish a consortium, with the objective of bringing together researchers who share a similar approach to the study of the socio-economic and organisational reality, increasing critical mass and enhancing complementarities. CSG aims to produce internationally-recognised high quality multi- and inter-disciplinary research. The unit’s hallmark is the study of economic and organisational reality through the lens of various social sciences, breaking the frequent isolation

of economics and management from other social disciplines, and enriching research. The unit believes that contemporary economies and organisations are complex realities which can only be understood from a plural theoretical and methodological perspective. CSG’s main specific objectives are the following: the development of research projects, mainly carried out in the Portuguese, European and Lusophone contexts; the publication of members scientific research, with a special emphasis on papers published in WoS and SCOPUS-indexed journals; the participation in scientific networks with partner institutions; the organisation and participation in scientific events; the advanced education of human resources, through PhD degrees and other graduate courses; and the dissemination of research to the public and private sector, and society as a whole. In 2015, CSG was subject to the international evaluation of R&D units by FCT - Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, and was ranked as “Excellent”.

People The CSG team embodies an openly inter-disciplinary nature, and includes researchers from different scientific fields, mainly Economic and Organisational Sociology, Economics, Management, Finance, Development Studies, and Economic and Social History.

PhD degrees Development Studies

Management

A PhD focused on the inter-disciplinary area of the process of economic, social, and political changes in modern societies. This degree, which was originally hosted by ISEG, became a joint venture between ISEG, ICS, IGOT, and ISA, all from Universidade de Lisboa.

A PhD that provide students with cutting-edge knowledge about Business and Management theory, as well as the necessary tools, methodologies, and strategies for developing relevant and impacting research.

Economic and Organisational Sociology

An innovative PhD in terms of its immersive inter-disciplinary approach. As a flagship of the College F3, it is jointly-organised by several schools of Universidade de Lisboa, spanning natural to social sciences. It aims to produce an impact on sustainable development, which is challenged by food production and consumption.

Includes a theoretical background on institutions, communities, policies, and markets. It focusses on the complexity of societies and the embeddedness of economic, social, and cultural dimensions as central issues that are visible in empirical subjects. Economic and Social History This PhD is included in the European Graduate School for Training in Economic and Social Historical Research (ESTER) network - a conjunction of prestigious universities which offers high-level research training in the field of Economic and Social History.

Sustainability Science

Others CSG also hosts the inter-university Sociology/ OPENSOC and MIT-Portugal programmes. A new programme on Political Economy will soon be launched.

Main Activities Networks

Meetings

Participation in scientific networks with national and international partner institutions, promoting knowledge-sharing, joint research projects, and debate on common fields of research.

Organisation of scientific events, often in collaboration with other institutions. CSG has been responsible for organising many large international conferences, summer courses, research workshops, seminars, and also debates, masterclasses, and open lectures.

Projects Development of projects that span different scientific fields, which are designed to face national and international challenges and to contribute to policy action. The main sources of funds are: FCT - Foundation for Science and Technology and other public agencies, such as the Bank of Portugal, Camões Institute for Cooperation and Language, High Commission for Migration; private institutions, including Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos, and Fundação Portugal-Africa; and international organisations, such as the European Commission, the United Nations, and the World Bank. Publications Diffusion of member’s scientific research through the publication of papers in peer-reviewed journals, books, chapters in books, and working papers. CSG displays an excellent track record for indexed publications (WoS and SCOPUS) in recent years.

Advanced training CSG activities are closely linked with graduate education at PhD, Masters, and Executive Training level, as well as the extensive teaching required at undergraduate level. Dissemination Extension of activities beyond the academic domain, aimed at the public sector and wider society, in the form of consultancy, elaboration of scientific studies for non-scientific institutions, participation in events, provision of vocational training, and laboratory experiments.

This forum was created to bring together the whole research team, to reinforce internal connections, and to foster team spirit. CSG hosted its 1st Forum on the 15th March, 2016, the 2nd on the 27th April, 2017, and the 3rd on the 24th May, 2018. These Forums include the participation of all members (integrated researchers, PhD students, and other researchers), with the aim of sharing knowledge within the respective Research Group or Thematic Line.

CSG Publications

Outreach & Impact For many years, CSG has produced open access resources, a noteworthy example being CESA’s “Memory of Africa” project. CSG makes open science a priority, by seeking and providing open access to the scientific publications of its researchers and fostering communication and public involvement with science. CSG has had a new website (https:// csg.rc.iseg.ulisboa.pt/) since 2016, in a bilingual format (Portuguese and English), which is a part of the consortium’s outreach science strategy. The website displays all the information regarding the research activity carried out within the framework of CSG. Newsletters and mailing campaigns are regularly sent to members and subscribers alike. In 2017, CSG became part of PASSDA (Production and Archive of Social Science Data), the national counterpart of the ESS-ERIC and CESSDA-ESFRI European infrastructures, which provides an open access platform for the archiving and curation of international research data.
