CABLINGPLANNER MAKING THE RIGHT CONNECTIONS

The missing link The influence of the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) phenomenon has spread wide in the workplace. On the cabling side, it has raised fresh awareness for intelligent infrastructure management (IIM), a solution already popular amongst networking circles. The traditionally passive structured-cabling infrastructures that connect network devices have somewhat clashed with modern real-time network management tools, which have proved useful with Middle East CIOs who are keen to keep a complete view over their networks. IIM solutions essentially provide the missing link between the two, and allow a platform to increase productivity and agility, whilst also providing a stronger infrastructure. Further benefits will be realised dependent on each individual network — CIOs with disparate IT systems, for example, will find particular joy with the technology. Network challenges have proliferated in recent years as trends like cloud, virtualisation, Big Data and mobility, which links to the aforementioned BYOD, continue to threaten traditional IT environments. With these new technologies promising fruitful benefits for those keen to invest — or perhaps also those who are scared of being left behind — the importance of a safe, reliable, and fully available and optimised IT infrastructure is stronger than ever. IIM systems use scanners and intelligent hardware components to provide control and visibility of the cabling connecting and active equipment, as well as moves, additions and changes in real-time. They enhance security and identify unused ports and network assets by monitoring physical change to the infrastructure, thus maximising network utilisation. Furthermore, they are able to integrate with all manner of IP devices, such as cameras, CCTV, door access and intruder alarms. Read more about IIM from industry experts in this issue of Cabling Planner, and learn how to better establish an ‘intelligent network’ to ultimately get more from existing IT infrastructures.
