FERRARICOMPETITIONRESULTS SIZE MATTERS A number of readers spotted that the results table for the April Prescott hillclimb had been omitted from the last issue of CompRes. I am sorry for this – the reason was that the size of the news letter is a function of multiples of four pages. Last month’s production was 16 pages long and inserting the table would have pushed it to 20 pages, with the consequential increase in printing and postage costs. As we run on a very tight budget a sacrifice had to be made. Happily all is not lost and the missing Prescott table will be found on p6 of this edition.

A final reminder that the official closing date for entries for the Ferrari formula classic weekend at the Italia a Zandvoort meeting was 3rd June. If you wish to make a late entry there would be a few day’s grace after this date but I can’t promise that your name would be in the JULY programme. I remind you that the date of this race meeting is 18/19 June and all entrants to date have secured a pitbox. In addition to the Ffc events there is a race for ‘Italiaans Historich’ cars. Ferraris built in 1977 or earlier are eligible and we have circulated all our drivers who have suitable cars with the necessary information.

day scene (to me anyway) is the driver cooling system. Avid trackdayer DAVID BOLLAND was seen at the Club’s Oulton Park event wearing the latest in central cooling – an inner shirt embodying over 50ft of capillary tubing connected to an ice filled tank fitted with a recirculation pump. In David’s case the tank was housed in the forward compartment of his 360 Challenge car. An additional gadget can be attached to the driver’s helmet to feed cool filtered air to the head for up to two hours of cooling. I am not sure what happens

if the water cooling system springs a leak – it could be dead embarrassing for the driver when he comes into the pits. Talk about looking like a drip . . . If you go for the full works it will set you back a cool £800. It’s an interesting idea and we shall have to see how many Ferrari drivers follow suit – no sweat!

QUOTE OF THE MONTH When signing-on at race control at the Mallory Park meeting, the secretary of the meeting remonstrated with STUART ANDERSON for omitting from his entry form the name of his next of kin and their contact number. “Sorry,” said Stuart. “I just can’t get the dog to use the phone.”

FERRARI CONCOURS The Club’s National Concours takes place at Boughton House on Sunday, 3 July and we would like to see a representative selection of competition cars at this annual event. The idea is to have a small display of Ferraris drawn from our three 2005 championships: the Pirelli Maranello Ferrari Challenge, the Ferrari formula classic, and the Pirelli Ferrari Hill Climb Championship. We have already contacted one or two drivers to invite them to bring their cars along but if you would like to join the exhibition please get in touch with the Club office as soon as possible. If you haven’t been to this event in the past I can thoroughly recommend it as an enjoyable day out.

MALLORY PARK A full report of the Ferrari formula classic action is contained in this issue. Mallory is, of course, owned by that arch Ferrari enthusiast CHRIS MEEK, whose garage rarely fails to house the latest model from Maranello. Currently Chris has an Enzo but recently he took delivery of a 612 Scaglietti which bears his unmistakeable registration plate.

ZOLDER This is a last call for PMFC competitors for the Zolder race meeting on 24-26 June. Entries close on Friday, 10 June but if you have mislaid your form you need to contact Anne (on 01757702053 or e-mail to the address given on page 1) straight away. In last month’s issue of CompRes we gave you the detailed timetable for this race meeting. Since then we have been given details of the optional testing organised by Circuit Zolder on the Thursday (prior to the meeting starting the following day). The timing and costs for this is as follows: 0905 – 11.55 €165 13.05 – 16.55 €220 Whole day €350 11.00 – 11.55 €65 16.00 – 16.55 €65 The above testing may be booked and paid for on the day direct with the circuit. Please remember that there are also two testing sessions on the Friday afternoon (14.05 – 14.25 and 14.30 – 14.50) at a thrifty charge of €30 per session. The Friday testing sessions have been arranged by the race organisers, and again may be booked and paid for on the day. Tickets and vehicle passes will be available for collection at the Welcome Center at the entrance to the circuit. Documents will be checked at the Race Office on the first floor of the Control Building. The drivers briefing will be at 15.00 hrs on the Friday afternoon in the Drivers Briefing Room.

SNETTERTON Hard on the heels of the Ffc

2 CompRes

and PMFC overseas forays to Zandvoort and Zolder respectively comes the one-day race meeting at Snetterton, on Sunday 17 July, where both series will feature. There will be double header races for PMFC, with a single 20minute qualifying session, together with one Ffc race, again with its own qualifying period. The timetable for the meeting has just been issued and is as follows, with Ffc and PMFC activities kept separate: PMFC: Sign-on 07.40 – 08.40 Scrut 09.00 – 09.20 Qualifying 11.45 – 12.05 Race 1 15.55 – 16.15 Race 2

Ffc: Sign-on 08.30 – 09.30 Scrut 09.50 – 10.10 Qualifying 13.55 – 14.15 Race The Ferrari catering for this meeting is again in the capable hands of Jim and Janet Race. Judging by the superb job they did with the ‘Picnic in the Park’ at Mallory recently, we shall not be disappointed. The ticket price for the Snetterton hospitality will again be a slender £10.00 per head. To simplify things on the day, tickets must be purchased in advance by contacting Anne Swift no less than a week ahead of the meeting. Her contact details are indicated on page 1 of this issue.

their sights on! Geoff Dark scored well again with a best of 69.03. Surprisingly, his old sparring partners Brian Jackson and Christopher England were only a quarter of a second behind – both their cars a little short on straight -line speed against Geoff’s 308. Charlie White (F335 spider) was amongst these times, going amazingly well on his first visit to Harewood on 69.32, heading Philip Whitehead’s similar car. No worry though as Philip still had the measure of the 355s of John Swift, back on familiar territory, and Richard Allen, both on 70.02. John, on his first event with his recently acquired car, improved steadily whilst Richard kept on posting a string of near identical times. There was good competition right through the class, with Peter Hitchman bringing his Mondial 3.4t home ahead of the Andy Grier and John Dobson 328s – John just heading Peter Rogerson (F355) by a few hundredths. Jos van de Perre (308GTS) improved as the day went on, which was just as well as so did Pauline Goodwin – she was very close, and took the Club handicap win convincingly. Lorraine looked likely to give Pauline some competition, but a dive into the gravel trap at the notorious Quarry bend rather dampened her ardour! A mention too for Mike Haigh - not registered for the series, but he went well with his 328GTB and had a best of 68.98.

It was Christian Mineeff who took home maximum Championship points with his 328GTB.

Vying for FTD throughout the day were those two Harewood rivals of old: Nick Frost (348GTB/C) and Jon Goodwin (F355GTS). In the end it was Jon (lower picture) who grabbed the honours with a fine climb in 66.11. But it was so close . . .

N CASE YOU DID NOT know, MIRA is the Motor Industry Research Association near Nuneaton – famed for the banked high speed oval writes RICHARD ALLEN. Midland Automobile Club run this event and they do not let anyone loose on the oval, neither are you allowed to take a camera with you, so no photos with this one! Nevertheless it is about the fastest FHCC venue yet with fourth gear speeds of over 110 mph possible. Another very good entry of fifteen Ferraris turned out and it seemed likely to be a hot contest, with a bunch of F355s looking like the best things to be in, though 2004 FHCC Champion Nick Taylor was giving his newly acquired 348GTC an airing. Notable too was the debut of newly registered competitor David Tomlin with his F355 – fresh from the FOC Curborough school earlier in the week. The weather was set dry, overcast, and with a strong wind that was to play havoc with the timing gear. The usual two practice runs were taken before lunch and it was Chris Butler in charge with his F355 on a time of 54.93. Nick Taylor had immediately got the measure of his 348GTC with 55.10, and amazingly Geoff Dark going like the wind in his 308GTB was next with 56.51, ahead of Jon Goodwin who had spun on his second attempt. At this point Geoff was looking like a certain maximum points score and Richard Prior, on 57.06 with his 348ts, had cause to be worried!

just one car, Peter’s Mondial having thrown a fit of the sulks by refusing to start for the journey to Mallory. It was arranged that he and son Chris would share Lorraine’s 328, doing one race each. This meant a slick driver change-over routine during qualifying as each had to do a minimum of three laps. Another driver dependent on his lady’s munificence was Jon Goodwin. His regular Mondial had a technical problem that couldn’t be corrected in time so he again relied on Pauline’s 328 which she had used the previous day at the MIRA sprint.

QUALIFYING The weather was fine and sunny when the 17 Ferraris were released for qualifying. It was Gary Culver (Gp2 328GTB) who secured pole position by a fairly comfortable margin from Switzerland based William Jenkins (Gp3 308GTB). Booking places on row 2 were Nick Taylor (Gp2 Mondial t) and Richard Atkinson-Willes (Gp3 308GT4). Marco Pullen had a recurring gear selection problem on his Mondial

Race 1: Seconds after this shot was taken William Jenkins (Gp3 308GTB) nipped past Gary Culver to take victory by just half a second.

RACE 1 Racing started promptly at 1 o’clock. Following an installation lap and a green flag lap, sixteen Ferraris blasted off in a blare of noise for the first 20-minute contest. It was Nick Taylor who was first into Gerards followed by Jenkins, Spicer, Atkinson-Willes, Whitman and Pogson. Pole man Culver was down in 7th spot after a recurrence of the gearbox selection bothers that have dogged his car for some time. By lap 2 it was clear that Culver was on the move to make up for his faulty start: 4th on lap 2, 3rd on lap 3, and 2nd on lap 4.

out weight checks when the cars returned to the paddock but was thwarted when the scales were found to be inaccurate. By mid-morning the paddock was filling up nicely with Ferrari supporters. Jim and Janet Race, together with their enthusiastic helpers, were setting out their stall for the ‘Picnic in the Park’ – a slightly inaccurate description for the day’s catering since we had rearranged the hospitality in the splendid first floor Hailwood suite in the control building rather than the marquee originally planned. Outside, Maranello Concessionaires (aka Ferrari Classic Parts) had set up their truck with adjacent tentage, offering for sale lots of interesting Ferrari items. Their head financial honcho, Crispin Schlaefli, was on hand to offer advice and support. There was some feverish activity in the paddock sorting out the machinery for the race, particularly in the Pullen and Swift camps. Thanks to some skilled work with electric drills, rather like advanced dentistry using implants, David Preston and Gary Culver fettled the Swift undertray and pronounced it ready for active service again. Nicky Paul-Barron, who was at Mallory in a spectating role, was pressed into service to assist with the race commentary. Martin Brundle, watch your back!

By lap 5 he had taken the lead from Taylor and then one lap later Jenkins had moved into a threatening second place. While all this excitement was going on at the front Pogson seemed to be having a problem with oil surge in his wet sumped 328 and was trailing in 7th, just behind Spicer, Atkinson-Willes and Whitman. Leading the Gp1 division, Anderson was going great guns in the lovely TR bodied 250, keeping an increasingly frustrated Swift at bay by using the car’s competitive combination of light weight and very fit V12 engine to its fullest advantage. By mid-race the order seemed to have settled down, with Culver a comfortable distance ahead of Jenkins, and gaps appearing between the next batch of cars: Spicer, AtkinsonWilles, Taylor, Whitman and Pogson. Swift had managed to find a way past Anderson under braking and the unfortunate Everingham had pulled into the pits in a cloud of oil smoke. Marco Pullen also pulled in when his Mondial’s clutch disintegrated. Peter Hitchman had a little tiff with the wall at Shaws hairpin but continued with only a small scar to Lorraine’s pristine 328. Colin Campbell (Dino 246) circulated at a gentlemanly pace,

“For one glorious lap Richard Atkinson-Willes led Race 2, with William Jenkins and John Pogson nibbling at his heels.”

considerately keeping out of the firing line of the faster machinery. With three laps remaining of the 20 minute race, things suddenly changed at the front. On the exit to Gerards, Jenkins managed to find some extra impetus and squeezed past Culver and into the lead. He valiantly hung on to his slender lead to the chequered flag, winning the race by a mere half a second albeit with a fog of steam issuing from his engine bay. Fastest laps (and therefore new Group records) were recorded by William Jenkins (54.219), Gary Culver (54.257) and Stuart Anderson (58.511). Armed with these lap times it is interesting to delve into the history books of Ferrari at Mallory Park. The very first race in the Maranello Ferrari Challenge took place here on 25 May 1986. There was a 22 car field covering an assortment of Ferraris in four different classes. The overall winner was Tony Worswick in his heavily modified slick-shod 308GTB, who set a fastest lap of 54.5 seconds (timing was only to the nearest tenth in those days). The only driver who competed that day and again in the Classic race 19 years later is your reporter (using the same car). In 1986, when finishing in 7th place just behind Robbie Stirling and Rob Grootveld in their 512 Boxers, my best lap (on slicks) was 57.3. In 2005 the best lap, on treaded tyres, was . . . 57.377. So nothing really changes! Back in the paddock William Jenkins’s steam problem was diagnosed as a failed seal on the water pump. Damian Beauchamp from QV got stuck in to replace it prior to the Race 2 in 3 hours time. Peter Everingham resigned himself to taking no further part in activities except to fashion a bypass of the oil cooler to enable him to drive the car back to Norfolk. Crispin Schlaefli presented the Ferrari Classic Parts trophies to the class leaders whilst each of the Group winners received a

EUROPEAN CHALLENGE

€300 for driving in an unacceptable fashion and a further €250 for speeding in the pitlane. That great Irish double act, Paddy Shovlin and Michael Cullen, cleaned up in Class 1, taking a win and a second place apiece in fighting off all European opposition. There seemed to be an inordinate amount of expensive damage to many of the cars by Sunday afternoon. One wonders if this is really the sort of image that Ferrari SpA wants to portray in their factory-organised championship which, one supposes, is meant to help sell the road cars. Photos: top: Graham Price; bottom: SwiftyPix

The second double header— races 3 and 4—of the 2005 European 360 Challenge made its only UK visit on 14/15 May. It was the first time the Challenge had used Silverstone, the course chosen being the International circuit which includes some of the better elements of the GP track and makes for arguably greater spectator appeal as the cars come round rather more frequently. The meeting was also International in flavour, featuring FIA World Touring Cars as well as FIA GT. The Ferrari UK MotorSport (run by Damax) team fielded two cars in Class 2, both drivers

recruited from last year’s PMFC. Peter Sowerby was in his familiar silver car while Kevin Riley was driving his red 360. Another refugee from PMFC was Terry Coleman who prefers to throw in his lot with Kessel Racing. Peter Sowerby did a faultless job, winning his class in both races as well as setting the fastest laps. Kevin Riley was dogged by mechanical problems all weekend and finished 19th overall in R1 but scored a DNF in R2. Terry Coleman had a disastrous time. His car looked somewhat battered by the end and the official result for the first race notes that he was fined

SILVERSTONE GALLERY Clockwise from above: Peter Sowerby didn’t put a foot wrong in winning Class 2 in both races; the great double act of Paddy Shovlin and Michael Cullen were in top form, each claiming a Class 1 victory; the Ferrari UK MotorSport preparation area, run by Damax, was a model of organisation.

FIA GTs We went along to see the action at Silverstone in the FIA GT race, which this year took on the mantle of the RAC Tourist Trophy, the world’s oldest motor race. The event was dominated by the two Aston Martin DBR9s which outran everything that the Ferraris and Maserati MC12s could throw at them. These photos by GRAHAM PRICE show a selection of the Ferraris that took part. Clockwise from top: the GPC Sport 575 Maranello of Deletraz and Piccini; the Russian Age Racing 550 M driven by Bouchut and Fomenko; the 360 Cirtek Motorsport car of Eriksson and our old pal Joe Macari.
