VENOM

The AS Venom Dodge Viper replica is big, brash and loud – not perhaps the type of project you’d expect a kit car novice to undertake. Beginner builder, Andy Dyke, likes a challenge. IAN STENT MET HIM

DECEMBER 2007

SIZEMatters Neil Pullen had almost given up trying to find a kit car he could fit into. When he discovered a Luego Viento was the right size, the search was over. Adam Wilkins met him. THE CHANCE PURCHASE of a kit car magazine in an airport in around 1998 sewed the seeds of an idea in Neil Pullen’s mind. With a background in engineering, he decided a kit car project would be just the thing to keep him

entertained at the weekends. At first, he liked the idea of a Rover V8 powered Fisher Fury (for the noise as much as anything), but he was too big to get comfortable in the cockpit. Then he pondered an Ultima (still keen on having

a V8), but decided it was too expensive for a toy. When he looked at the wide bodied Caterham SV at the NEC Motor Show in 2002, and discovered he couldn’t even get comfy in that, he almost gave up on the whole kit car idea altogether. That was until Luego launched the supersize Viento. Here was a car that could not only accommodate him easily, but also that Rover V8 he craved. When he saw the demo at Stoneleigh 2004, he was going to sleep on the idea of building one, but his wife Becky told him to just

get on and do it, making him place a deposit there and then. Nice to see the domestic hierarchy working well! Original plans to fit the Viento with a luscious sounding V8 were shelved when internet research on various forums suggested finding a healthy SD1 engine would be difficult. “They’re so forgiving,” says Neil, “that I read lots of tales of apparently well running engines being stripped and needing expensive work doing.” The search was on for an alternative and, still keen on something bigger than a four-pot, Neil chose the Ford Cosworth V6. They don’t have the greatest reputation (weight and lack of tuning potential often cited as downsides), but Neil was smitten by their bombproof dependability and the fact they were only fitted to automatic Granada Scorpios, meaning none would have been overworked. Oh, and he also came

across a terrific company in the form of Top Boss Performance in Derby which has plenty of tricks up its sleeve to boost the standard 195bhp output. Who said you can’t tune a Cossie V6? Neil bought a complete Scorpio donor for £500 which had covered 105,000 miles (95,000 of which were with the first owner with full service history). It was stripped within a couple of weeks and the engine sent away to Top Boss Performance for reconditioning. He gave them a brief to strip it to the block and replace anything that was worn. As it turned out, only the cam timing belt tensioner needed renewing (as well as various seals etc). Not everything could be used from the donor. The auto box was substituted for a Type 9 manual, while the front hubs and rear calipers also come from a Sierra. The front calipers are from a scrapped Escort Cosworth (and have proven a little too powerful for the lightweight Luego) and the diff was part-exhanged for an LSD from a later Granada. One major component which could be retained from the Granada was the wiring loom. “I panicked when I took the dash out and saw the wiring,” Neil remembers. “The wiring was a long, difficult job. It wasn’t horrendously complicated, though. You just need to keep going at it and everything becomes clear.” His wiring is actually made of three parts – the engine loom from the donor, the main loom from Luego, and it’s joined by bits salvaged from the donor. It was those donor wires that caused the headaches. Working from a wiring 88 www.completekitcar.co.uk

diagram he got from the Scorpio Owners’ Club, each time he cut away a wire (for unnecessary things like the air con or heated seats), he’d have doubts and worry he’d cut something out that he’d later need. Another job he’d rather forget was fitting the differential. Laying under the car, he wrestled for ages and it simply
