A Word From The Editor

This month sees Community Spotlight celebrate it’s 2nd anniversary. I am so thrilled to see how successful the magazine has become since I first launched it in June 2011. The feedback we continue to receive from the readers, community groups and advertisers proves to me that the magazine is having a massive impact on the S66 communities. See the article on page 12 for feedback from another community group who has benefited from the magazine.

To celebrate our 2nd anniversary we are offering an additional 10% off any new advertising booking of any length (available to old and new customers). Please continue to send us anything that you feel would be of interest to the S66 communities. Congratulations to last month’s competition winners who received their prizes this past week.

Wickersley School Fundraising for Update From Feed The Community It has been a couple of months since "Feed the South Africa - Update Community" featured in the Community Spotlight Not many weeks to go now before 22 students from WSSC will be departing on 12th July 2013 to go to a township in Port Elizabeth where they will be constructing a rainwater harvesting system, planting trees and sustainable crops. This will leave a lasting legacy, a practical solution of an age old problem of access to water to irrigate the land for the community of that Township, lasting far beyond the few weeks that the students will be working there.

Magazine. At the beginning of May we received a successful outcome on our first stage grant application to South Yorkshire Community Foundation. We await the outcome of our second stage application, which if successful will secure us the money required to cover our start-up costs, including wormery units for composting.

The students are travelling in July and have been working hard for over 18 months to raise the thousands of pounds needed for the work to be done. AND THEY HAVE DONE IT!

On a practical level, the recent wet weather has given us food for thought on land design and best practice, as we stand apart from conventional gardening towards a Permaculture design, for sustainable living more of that next month.

The last fundraising event at School on Monday 1st July 2013 will be a Fashion Show from 6:30pm (with opportunity to try and buy). PLEASE COME ALONG and support this last event before they embark on this amazing trip. The positive impact upon the African community and the students at Wickersley School will remain with them for a lifetime. If you wish to donate to this cause please visit www.charitygiving.co.uk/wickersley-PE Partnership

Emma and Graham have a selection of plants that they hope to be donating to the community allotment to add to diversity. As always, if you would like to know more then please get in touch: E-mail: emma.communityfeed@yahoo.com Tel: 07812802021

Environment Committee

At the last meeting of Maltby Town Council's environment committee, discussion was held regarding the amount of litter in and around Maltby, in particular the problem of Fly-Tipping. Many places in Maltby were mentioned as being particularly prone to the problem. Piles of used syringes have been found in Lilly Hall Farm woods and also at the Bandstand down the Crags, with the obvious negative Health and Safety issues related with this. Rubbish is dumped on a regular basis on Gypsy Lane near Roche Abbey. A particular problem in this area seems to be general household rubbish and also business waste. The carcass of a dog has even been thrown over the embankment, even though it is listed as a place of special scientific interest. It is a problem which is getting worse as time goes on with trees festooned with plastic carrier bags and other items. Many of the snickets are eyesores because of the amount of litter just thrown down there, instead of using bins or taking the litter home. Please take your rubbish home or to the dump site. Skip days are held in and around Maltby with many of Maltby's people taking the opportunity to get rid of unwanted items responsibly. Rotherham Borough Council also has a large item collection service for those wishing to get rid of bulky large items.[There is a charge for this service] PLEASE DISPOSE OF YOUR UNWANTED ITEMS RESPONSIBLY. We CAN make a difference to how our village looks.

Housing Benefit “Bedroom Tax”

From April 2013, the Government has reduced the amount of Housing Benefit for working age Council and Housing Association tenants living in homes that are classed as too big for their needs and are thus deemed to have spare bedrooms. · Are you a Council or Housing Association tenant under pension age? · Do you receive Housing Benefit? If you answered yes to all of these, these changes

8

Maltby Town Council may have affected you. Rotherham Borough Council has written to all those affected to tell them how much their Housing Benefit has reduced. If you need help then you may be entitled to a Discretionary Housing Payment. To obtain an application form call the RMBC Housing Benefit Section on 01709 336006.

Benefit, Welfare and Debt Advice

Need help with disability living allowance? Need debt advice? Help with applying for benefits? You can now get receive free and impartial advice at the Edward Dunn Memorial Hall. Drop in sessions are now being held twice a week. No appointment necessary. Tuesday 2pm to 4pm Saturday 10am to 12 noon

Maltby Food Bank

The Maltby Food bank is currently providing Eat Well Bags to identified individuals/families who are suffering food poverty or are in need. Eligibility is agreed by appropriate agencies based on, e.g., low income, benefit sanction, financial/budgeting problems, health related need etc. £500 has been donated by Maltby Town Council to provide 10 food parcels per week for 10 weeks. The Town Council is working in partnership with Stepping Stones (SSCC), RMBC Children Young People & Families Service Maltby. These organisations are utilising a referral process in order for people in need to benefit from a food parcel. To receive a free food parcel you need to be referred by one of the above organisations. Once identified the families/individuals will be given a food parcel by workers from the Stepping Stones Children’s Centre. The donation from Maltby Town Council is being used as a pilot scheme, which will be monitored and reviewed throughout the project. If found to be successful, it is hoped that this pilot will be utilised to attract outside funding to continue the scheme. CONTINUED ON PAGE 10>>>

Another Success Story By Aaron James

We recently received a note from the new Austen Drive Allotment Association in Bramley, illustrating how pleased they were with the response to last month's article. The organisation is going from strength to strength, having formed last year to restore neglected wasteland, behind the Travellers pub, back to a fully working allotment site. The community pulled together to clear the land in their own time and at their own expense, making it safer and less unsightly. They have many plans for the future including an allotment garden and memorial for the community to enjoy. Community Spotlight on S66 is pleased to have played a part in assisting this worthy venture to publicise its aims and wish them well in securing the additional funding required to enable the planned fencing, paths, tools, sheds etc. If anyone in the community would like to donate money/items it would be much appreciated by the association and a simple like of their Facebook page would be a help in further spreading the word.

clubs/associations and from charities to business advertisers, the feedback is always welcome and encouraging. We work hard to be at the heart of what is happening in S66 and we are justifiably proud of the impact our magazine has had and continues to have on bringing our whole community together. Your views, suggestions and stories are always welcome.

Bramley Parish council The A.G.M for B.P.C was held on May 14th. Malcolm Brown was re-elected as Chairman and Dennis Hardwick returned as Vice Chair. Minutes of the meeting will be posted on the councils website. The painting of the play equipment on Flash Lane has been completed. The new equipment should have been installed at the time of going to press. The hand over of the lease for the Bill Chafer Youth Club from RMBC to Bramley P.C has moved a step closer.

The thanks from this project is just one of the many The Council with help from Bramley and Wickersley messages of success and appreciation we receive Lions Club have received many compliments on frequently from the community. From individuals to the tree and bulb planting around the village.

FOCUS Father’s Day

Following the success of Mother’s Day which originated in the USA, it seemed apt of course to give Dads a chance to be recognised for a special day in the year when they too could be treated and pampered. It is acknowledged that a lady called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother's Day celebrations and she planned a day to give thanks to fathers and indeed this special day has been celebrated in the USA since 1910. Held on the third Sunday in June, Father’s Day is a day to honour those who play a fatherly role and visit them and / or treat them to gifts to show how important they are in our lives. With the increase in availability of personally printed products, Dads often get given mugs, T’shirts or calendars. Depending on the age of the children involved a specially drawn picture or painted pebbles can be treasured for years to come - for those who are older a pub lunch is often favoured!

International Picnic Day

monthly

monthly focus 

FOCUS International Picnic Day There seems to be a special day for everything nowadays whilst this is no exception, it was one that seemed a shame to ignore. Whilst there’s little information that points to a definitive origin for this special day, what could be better than spending time outdoors with friends and family? It falls on 18th June this year so why not find a local park or field, kick off your shoes and enjoy an al fresco meal together? Make sure you go somewhere that isn’t restricted for what you want to take (pets / alcohol etc.) and ensure that there’s sufficient shade for those of your party who need it. Bring cups and plates that will withstand a grassy field/slopes or sand and always, always remember a bag for the rubbish. There’s nothing worse than people who leave their mess behind for others. Games are fab too and they don’t have to be athletic. A peaceful game of Scrabble in the sun is just as fun as leaping around with a Frisbee (and less disruptive on people around you). And finally don’t forget your blanket. Make sure you can wash it or wipe it clean and ensure it’s big enough for everyone and the food!

On Lifestyle & Interests

The idea of what constitutes a good summer varies greatly according to one’s interests, and the average child or beach lover is happy with bright sun every day but gardeners and farmers crave a bit of moderation. Perfection might be sunshine all day and rain at night but that rarely happens so we usually have to spend some time rescuing our water starved plants at some point through the summer. It is better to water heavily, soaking the soil occasionally rather than giving a light shower which will just encourage the roots to the surface and the water will never get down to where it is needed. Concentrate on salad crops to keep lettuce and radish etc. crisp and don’t worry so much about crops and plants with deeper roots. If you can catch rainwater in

A Beginner’s Guide To Watering

a water butt or large containers, that’s all to the good but don’t be afraid to use washing-up water (we haven’t all got dish washers) and bathwater if it’s not too contaminated by bubble bath and suchlike. Don’t worry about the lawn - grass really is as tough as old boots and although it might look like the Gobi desert, it will all come back to life after a decent drop of rain. If the theories about global warming and warmer summers are to be believed, perhaps we should consider growing more plants that are happier in drier, more Mediterranean conditions rather than our traditional cottage garden varieties. Many grey or silver- leaved plants are a good example. Think about lavenders, rosemary, cistus, many ornamental grasses, bamboo and herbs.

Recipe, Dog Walking & DIY

The Joys of Dog Walking As a nation, we seem to all love pets with over 50% of us owning an animal. Over 6.6 million dogs are owned in Britain, making them an extremely popular pet, with good reason too! As we all know, dogs sometimes seem the happiest souls we know. They are always pleased to see you and love a good fuss, but they can be demanding too and need lots of exercise. It is not all bad though as the exercise can benefit you as well as your dog! The UK isn’t famous for its glorious weather and sometimes the idea of going out in the cold, wet and wind is less than desirable. However, your dog still needs to go out. By just taking a dog walking in the fresh air can help rejuvenate you and really clear your head. Although so many of us have dogs, we may not think about what we can really gain from walking them. For as well as their happiness, it can also be extremely pleasurable for us too. Given the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we may sometimes forget how beneficial dog walking can actually be.

DIY for beginners Know your drill bits! Metal drill bits have a partially ground tip and are suitable for non-ferrous metals (copper, aluminium etc.) Wood drill bits have a long centering tip with two pre-cutting spurs and the internal edge then cuts cleanly through wood. Concrete drill bits are for masonry and concrete (although you need a rotary hammer for concrete) and the tip is covered in carbide.

FOR YOU Nutrition and Later Life by Rachel Jessey Ageing is a natural biological process that we all have to go through. As we get older our bodies change, and in certain circumstances the demands for specific nutrients increases. Ageing doesn’t mean that we are going to succumb to the diseases often associated with later life, but it is during this stage of life that nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining the body’s natural defences which help to protect against the development of chronic disease. A number of factors can affect nutritional status in later life:

 A natural decline in the ability to absorb nutrients as efficiently as before.

 Age related change in smell and taste can lead to poor appetite.

 Saliva production decreases making food less appealing and harder to break down into more absorbable components.

 By the age of 50 our stomach acid production declines. This inhibits the absorption of certain nutrients in particular vitamin B12, a deficiency of which can be misdiagnosed as Alzheimer’s disease as they both display similar symptoms.

 Tooth loss, ill fitting dentures or a dry mouth prevent the ability to chew properly causing discomfort, making eating a less pleasurable experience.

30

 Some medications can prevent absorption of certain nutrients

 The digestive system slows down and becomes sluggish, so digestive discomfort such as constipation is a common complaint in later life. It is no myth that as we age we are more susceptible to developing chronic diseases. Enjoying food and maintaining adequate nutrient levels is an important factor during later life. Poor nutrition has been shown to increase the risk of infections and reduce the function of the immune system. Identifying and correcting factors contributing to nutritional deficiencies is important to maintaining health. Increasing fibre and fluid intake along side gentle exercise will help support your digestive system, ease constipation and support your body’s natural defences. Supplementing with digestive enzymes can help with the breakdown of food particles into more absorbable components and hydrochloric acid supplements can help increase stomach acid levels and help with absorption of key nutrients. The inclusion of a good all-round multi-vitamin will help initially to correct any nutrient deficiencies but please make sure you consult a qualified health care professional before taking supplements as interactions can occur with certain medications. HAIR COUTURE Voluminous Curls

Celebrity hairdresser, Richard Ward shares his tips on achieving beautifully voluminous curls… With a nod of inspiration to the 70’s – the key to gorgeous curls is volume, bounce and touch-ability. This ultra-feminine look is easy to achieve and both glamour and condition are the key. Hair should be left looking lustrous and shining with health and vitality. Get the look: Go for maximum volume with a Hair Volumiser Root Booster and Velcro Rollers, rolled up to mid-lengths only. The trick to achieving full-bodied, bouncy hair is not to overload your hair with products. After washing with a volumising shampoo and conditioner, towel dry your hair and apply Volumiser Root Booster to the roots before blow-drying using a large barrelled bristle brush. Concentrate on the root area for extra lift and volume. If you have fine hair, avoid using a serum to finish as this can weigh hair down, instead spritz some hairspray onto your hands and gently smooth over hair. This will lightly coat hair without flattening or making it too heavy and the hairspray will also hold the style for longer. This stunning look is perfect for long, heavily layered hair that is medium to thick in texture. For celebrity inspiration look to stars such as Holly Willoughby, Mila Kunis and Kelly Brook.

www.homeinstead.co.uk/rotherham Woody Guthrie’s long struggle with Huntington’s Disease Many of us have heard of the, controversial, American folk singer Woody Guthrie (1912-1967) He is probably most famous for his, dust bowl era, reworking of Irving Berlin’s ‘God Bless America’ as ‘This land is your land’ ‘This is your land, this land is my land. From California to the New York Island. From the Redwood Forest, to the Gulf stream waters. This land was made for you and me‌’ Guthrie is less well-known for his long struggle to find an accurate diagnosis for what seemed like a curious set of symptoms, including a gradual loss of muscle control, mood swings, and other mental difficulties which, amongst other things, destroyed his family life and left him increasingly isolated.

34

Home Instead in 5otherham & district is part of a national organisation rapidly building a reputation as one of the UK’s leading care companies allowing older people to continue living in their own homes. Huntington’s Disease Association A while ago I became aware that, the incidence of Huntington’s disease in Rotherham and District is higher than was once thought. This is a national phenomenon because of better diagnosis in recent years. So I was especially pleased to meet Diana King, Regional Care Adviser at the Huntington’s Disease Association. She explained more about the nature and effects of Huntington’s disease and provided some further pointers. The nature of Huntington’s Huntington’s is a neurological disorder, a brain disease. It is hereditary and due to the transmission of a faulty gene from one generation to the next. It appears to damage nerve cells in the brain which over a three year period can lead to a loss of a third of the weight of the affected brain. This creates physical gaps in the brain causing it to struggle to make the connections it needs to make within it.

He was variously diagnosed as having alcoholism or Schizophrenia, neither of which he had. It was finally concluded, correctly, that he had the relatively rare neurological disorder, called Huntington’s disease which was first clinically described by the American Physician George Huntington in 1872 after whom it is named.

At first this can lead to small changes in co-ordination and minor involuntary movements, along with other concentration, memory and mood related dysfunctions. This may be followed by more extreme mental health or cognitive issues that lead to symptoms ranging from compulsive thoughts and delusions to highly inflexible and rigid thinking. These can combine with advanced physical symptoms, such as loss of the ability to speak, chew or swallow which are naturally very distressing.

Meeting the Regional Care Advisor from the

to diagnosis but their personality and behaviour can change quite radically. For example their conversation can become limited and begin to sound like someone giving orders and their emotional intelligence also diminishes so that they can appear deeply insensitive to the impact of their words on loved ones. They may also display inappropriate emotional reactions to words or circumstances. This can all be confusing and difficult for family and friends who can feel alienated or afraid due to the changes they experience. It is likely to have a similar impact on the person with the condition who may also no longer have sufficient insight to understand the impact of their words and actions. The condition is little understood by the general public so it can potentially place those who have it at risk in some circumstances. The need for some sort of respite for family carers is obvious. It is difficult to imagine the impact upon the person with Huntington’s but clearly increasing social isolation is a common theme. How many people have Huntington’s Huntington’s is rare. There are only 6,000 sufferers in the UK. Can Huntington’s be tested for? Genetic testing is available on referral from your GP to a Regional Genetic Clinic. The test can show if a person has

inherited the gene causing Huntington’s but it is not possible to say when the symptoms will appear. Diana told me that symptoms can appear at any age. Although typically that is between 30-70 some youngsters develop them much earlier and some as late as in their 90s. Professional support for people with Huntington’s There is no cure for Huntington’s although research is ongoing. Medication is constantly being improved and there have been tremendous strides in symptom management over the last 20 years. For example targeted drugs can reduce the level and intensity of mood swings and, particularly the most forceful, involuntary movements. The involvement of a Regional Care Adviser such as Diana, a Dietician, Speech Therapist, Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist and other professionals can also help a person with Huntington’s. Complementary therapists may also assist. Aromatherapy and massage may, for instance, help relieve muscular aches, pains and tension. Companionship based support at home can be of particular benefit to those with Huntington’s if the consistency of the service is ‘real’ and assuming it integrates genuine motivational aspects. <<<CONTINUED FROM PAGE 35 Working with people who have Huntington’s As Diana told me: ‘People with Huntington’s often retain a great sense of humour and working with them, and their families, is very rewarding, especially once the particular impacts of the condition upon the individual are uncovered and understood when it can become deeply satisfying and productive.’ When should people contact Diana as our local Huntington’s Regional Care Adviser? Diana says: ‘One difficulty is that many professionals only come across a person with Huntington’s once in their career. And of course I do so daily. This is, hopefully, helpful to those we seek to serve through the Association. I have been pleased to be a listening ear, a facilitator and coordinator on matters of care and advisor on matters ranging from information on benefits to specialist equipment, respite (which is often very hard to find), holidays and so on. The biggest danger is probably that people fail to ask us a question they want an answer for! We love to be able to help. It is what we are here for. Please just contact me if you feel I may be able to help you or a loved one or maybe just a friend who is affected by Huntington’s. And of course, as my role is to support and advise anyone affected, the family and other carers are also high on my agenda.’

It is also worth mentioning that the Huntington’s Association, also holds awareness raising events, produces literature and holds conferences. A range of information and materials can be found on its website. They always welcome interest locally and there are groups and branch events in our area. It is amazing what they achieve given the very slim-line nature of the organization and its administration. Special Huntington’s Disease Association Event in Rotherham There is a Special Celebration Meeting of the Huntington’s Disease Association on Thursday 13th June 7.30pm - 9.30pm at Ferham House Rotherham S61 1AL. It celebrates what has been achieved in managing the care of those with Huntington’s and advances in research. The event will be attended by local Clinic members and Dr Quarrell will be amongst the presenters. It is free to attend, no booking required, and all are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

Our First 3 Months As Foster Carers By An Anonymous Foster Carer

Myself and my wife were passed as foster carers at the end of last year and now that we are a few months into our fostering career I felt that it would be a good time to reflect on our journey. Over the Last 2 months I have shared my thoughts on our motivation to foster, the application and assessment process, and how to become a foster carer. This month I want to briefly share our experience of our first 3 months. We were passed towards the end of 2012 and after a 2 month wait our first placement finally arrived. That 2 months seemed more like 6 whilst we eagerly anticipated the beginning of our fostering journey. After a false start our placement eventually arrived just before Christmas. I would describe the first three months as a blur. It passed in a heart beat and was the steepest learning curve I think we have ever gone through. In the beginning the main things we had to think about were the practical issues. We needed to sort out clothes, toys and Christmas presents. We quickly built a bond and Christmas gave us a great

opportunity to do this. We had plenty of support from social workers and always knew that we had someone on the end of the phone if we needed them. Within a few weeks our 2nd placement had arrived and we went through the whole process again. We’ve had tears, laughter, good times, challenging times, times of heartache and many adjustments to make. Above all else even just after a few months we can say with confidence that it has all been worth it and we have already made a massive difference to the lives of 2 children. I want to encourage you to give some thought to if you could be the difference in a child's life. If you are interested in fostering in rotherham contact the RMBC fostering team on 01709 823976 or see www.rotherham.gov.uk/fostering for more information. You could also pop along to a fostering information event. The next information event is on Wednesday 3rd July at Rawmarsh Library between 10am and 12 noon.

Could you be the difference in a child’s life? Are you interested in fostering in Rotherham? You can be single, married, in a same sex relationship. If you are over 21 years and have a spare bedroom in your home. We provide an allowance plus comprehensive training and support.
