The Observant Jew

Fully En-Gauged RABBI JONATHAN GEWIRTZ

H

ave you ever been driving and suddenly, without warning, your low fuel light goes on? OK, so you had warning. The needle had slowly been making its way down from F towards E as you traveled on your merry way, first ½ a tank, then ¼, then 1/8, but even though you knew it was coming, that little orange light can be terrifying. So, now, you have to guess how far you can drive and if you will make it to a gas station before your car sputters to a halt on the highway, you have to call for help, and your spouse will have new ammunition for poking fun at you for the foreseeable future. Yes, some people “never let the gas get below half a tank.” There’s a word for people like that: “Annoying.” But now, there I was, driving down the road and my orange light came on indicating that I’d better find fuel soon or else I would not live it down. In some cars you are just at the mercy of the little light and you have no idea how much time you have, how much gas is in the tank when the light comes on, or how far that gas will take you. My car, however, has some spiffy little technology that helps. When you push a button on the steering wheel, you can cycle through lots of helpful information on tire pressure, mileage, temperature, and the pièce de résistance, a “distance to empty” readout. This handy tool calculates how far you will go based on the amount of fuel left in the tank and the

10

March 10, 2015 •

average mileage you’ve been getting. It actually says you have 16 miles or whatever it determines to be correct. In situations when I’ve been running low (yes, it has happened more than once) I’ve used that to help me figure out whether I should start panicking or not. Then I realized that it wasn’t as helpful as I thought. You see, based on different driving conditions, such as leaving the highway where you get good gas mileage and moving to city streets where traffic, stoplights, and callous pedestrians who make you wait as they leisurely jaywalk in front of you resulting in seriously reduced efficiency, your gauges are going to overestimate what you really have left. Instead, I’ve found a more useful indicator. When you push that button on the wheel, there’s also a little graph that tells you your current efficiency. Depending on how you accelerate or use cruise, you can see whether you’re getting ten miles per gallon at this moment, or fifty. A friend of mine used to use a similar gauge on a much older car to travel long distances on small amounts of fuel, even when he wasn’t running on empty. The reason it’s so much better is because instead of just getting a semi-accurate idea of when you will run out of gas, you are actually able to do something to prolong the amount of time you can keep moving forward. Instead of being reactive, you’re being proactive! In life, we don’t know how much time we have on this planet. We see people who live a very long time, and we see

www.thejewishlink.com

info@thejewishlink.com

people whose lives seem to be cut short. It’s possible this was all the time they were allotted, even though others live a lot longer. I started thinking: wouldn’t it be amazing if people knew how much time they had left? If they could use the gauges to know they had fifty-eight years left, or only eight years? Then, they could pace themselves to do as much as possible in that time. Then I realized that it was no different than seeing how many miles were left. It might be nice, but a much better tool would be to focus on maximizing the mileage we’re getting right now. By trying to fill each moment with as much goodness as possible, we are going to go farther than we would simply by knowing when the engine will stop. A friend left this world at a youthful forty-nine years of age, but when we figured out all the things he was doing when he was here, from Torah to chesed to all kinds of mitzvos, we marveled at how he had crammed 120 years of life into less than half that time.

The bottom line is that if you want to make the most of your trip on earth, don’t worry about how much time you have, but what you do with it. You’ll get the farthest in life if you remain fully engaged.

Always Prepared Top European Rabbis Learn Self-Defense, Community Preparedness from Leading Israeli Rescue Organizations

16

March 10, 2015 •

O

ver 100 rabbis from across Europe on Monday practiced how to combat weapon attacks and other physical threats at the Rabbinical Centre of Europe (RCE) conference in Prague. This special training session for communal emergency situations was led by Dov Maisel, chief operations officer of IsraeLife: United Hatzalah, and Matti Goldstein, head of ZAKA, and was a part of a three-day conference covering important halachic and communal issues for Jews across Europe. Following the recent wave of anti-Semitics attacks in Europe, the European Jewish Association, the Matanel Foundation’s Hulya think tank and the RCE invited Maisel and Goldstein to train communal leaders in self-defence and how to cope with terrorism. During the practice session, an SMS emergency drill was distributed to the attending rabbis, showing them how technology can boost response during a crisis by using United Hatzalah’s LifeCompass platform and NowForce smartphone application. These tools, developed in Israel, quickly gather data about an emergency and draw a virtual perimeter around the incident so that a first

responder can be dispatched to the scene within seconds. In addition, Maisel and Goldstein instructed the rabbis on self-defense techniques to ward off an armed attacker and how to react at the scene of a terror attack. Rabbis practiced how to neutralize a terrorist with a knife or gun and received basic training on how to provide assistance to victims of an attack. “The rabbis went through a special course that we give to emergency staff representatives,” explained Maisel. “They really learned just the ‘tip of the iceberg’ of how to react in terror attacks within the community. We introduced them to the LifeCompass technologies and the NowForce emergency application. The whole idea of the course was to engage them in the technologies used by Zaka and United Hatzalah under the oversight of IsraeLife and to help Jewish communities in emergency situations. We did this to help the RCE in taking active steps forward in emergency preparedness, to understand the urgency and to apply these techniques into the communities.”

Highest Standards Rabbi Yossi Niasoff helps Glatt Mart surpass the bar of kashrut standards.

W

alking into Glatt Mart on Pico Blvd is an experience all on it’s own. Ranging from their variety of wines and liquor, to their vast selection of groceries, Glatt Mart has much to offer Los Angeles’ Kosher consumers. However, there is one thing which is set apart from all the others. As a loyal customer and regular shopper, one day I chanced upon a new face in their meat department. After observing this man assisting customers in the meat department, he introduced himself as Rabbi Yossi Niasoff, and his mission is to help Glatt Mart surpass the bar of kashrut standards. Coming from four generations of shochtim, and having worked as a shochet himself for the past 10 years (for CHK and Star-K), Niasoff possesses a vast knowledge regarding meat and kashrut. When asked about his position in the store, Niasoff said,“Glatt Mart felt that even though they have a full time mashgiach in the store (as required by their supervision), the owners wanted someone with an extensive amount of knowledge of meat and kashrut to supervise the meat department, in order to increase the level of comfort and assurance for their consumers.” Niasoff continued, “We at Glatt Mart pride ourselves to provide our customers with the highest quality fresh American Angus and Agri Star meat.” He emphasized that Glatt Mart doesn’t carry any Uruguayan frozen meat, and that they only carry the freshest quality that there is. The meat one can find in Glatt Mart, boasts many certifications, amongst them Crown Heights, Kehilla of Los Angeles, and CRC. Niasoff also spoke about the stickers on each package of meat which displays the supervision and the process of his involvement to ensure the stickers are accordingly distributed. To ensure that there are no mistakes, Niasoff said, “We only work with one hechsher at a time on our tables.” I asked Niasoff what makes Glatt Mart’s meat unique compared to other butcher shops in Los Angeles; he said, “Our extra lean ground beef is 90% fat free, and we never had and never will use any coloring to enhance the presentation of our meat.”

“We at Glatt Mart pride ourselves to provide our customers with the highest quality fresh American Angus and Agri Star meat.” Niasoff continued, “With the volume of sales in our meat department, Baruch Hashem, we have the freshest product available at all times. It would be my pleasure to personally assist each customer in their purchase. Right now we have been getting ready for the Passover season and we have the biggest selection of Passover goods in all of Los Angeles” After showing me a tour of the meat department, Niasoff had one final message, “We are looking forward to assist you with an amazing shopping experience for all your Passover needs.” Glatt Mart is located at 8708 West Pico Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90035

On the Front Lines Israeli Soldier speaks to groups across the United States on Operation Protective Edge

O

nly six months following Israel’s intense summer, American Friends of LIBI brought Captain Oron Kalmanzon of the Israel Defense Forces last week to six different cities in the United States, where he spoke about his life changing experience during Operation Protective Edge to different groups of students, professionals, and congregations. At one of his destinations, Livingston, New Jersey, Captain Kalmanzon spoke to the congregation of the Suburban Torah synagogue. During the session, Captain Kalmanzon not only discussed the operation’s challenges and strategies, but also stressed the importance of the Lone Soldiers who fought in Operation Protective Edge and the huge impact their roles played during the operation. Rabbi Elie Mischel of Suburban Torah was very pleased with Captain Kalmanzon’s speech and said, “Captain Kalmanzon is an inspiration- a soldier who represents the very best of the IDF and the people of Israel. His strength, humility and love for the Jewish people gave us confidence that our people will overcome any enemy that threatens to harm us. And his very presence helped us feel more connected to the heroes defending the State of Israel every moment of every day”. Lois Petty of Christian Friend of Israel and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church said the meeting with IDF Captain Kalmanzon reminded her of “the biblical David who was a humble young man but grew into a might warrior. Following his speech at the American University, one student commented “It was nice to hear Captain Oron speak about his experience in Operation Protection Edge. that the Israeli army does that are not perceived in daily life. This event was definitely a great experience. It made me think how I could make a difference on what is happening in the Middle East now. Rabbi Tuly Weisz inspired us to contribute to the IDF Lone Soldiers, or donating a sum to the friends of LIBI”. Attendees from each presentation showed a deep interest in Captain Kalmanzon’s experience and asked follow up questions. Although Operation Protective Edge was widely featured in media channels over the summer, Captain Kalmanzon was able to share moments he firsthand witnessed, and the seconds he will never forget. American Friends of LIBI is a volunteer organization supporting the social, educational and religious need of Israeli soldiers. Change is in the Air Over 200 Gather for Landmark Conference to Discuss Risk, Trauma and Abuse in Jewish Community

P

hilanthropists Announce $1 Million Victims’ Therapy Fund - 220 participants from 102 organizations gathered last week in Newark, New Jersey for a groundbreaking conference addressing some of the most sensitive topics affecting the Orthodox Jewish community: risk, trauma and abuse. The milestone event was hosted by Amudim and included 25 private practice clinicians as well as rabbis, educators, therapists, clinical directors, heads of major organizations, social workers, philanthropists and many others who spent two days analyzing these rarely discussed problems and formulating a five point strategy for tackling these complex issues head on. “This was the first ever conference of this type within the Orthodox Jewish community,” said Zvi Gluck, director of Amudim. “This was a collaborative effort by many people and many organizations and is just the beginning of what will be an all out effort to effect crucial changes to benefit our precious children.” The statistics for both abuse cases and drug overdoses in the Jewish community are staggering, with dozens of known cases reported since Rosh Hashana and over three dozen deaths of people under age 35 in the Jewish community in that same time period, underscoring the need for serious and immediate intervention. The workshop-based event divided participants into four separate groups, each of which identified both short term goals

While each of the four groups worked individually, in different rooms, all came up with a set of similar goals which were then boiled down into five distinct strategies: centralizing information and access to resources, creating grass roots efforts to

change the status quo, developing evidenced based support services, engaging rabbanim, educators and parents to promote child safety and creating funding strategies. Numerous participants volunteered to begin taking leadership roles in implementing the strategies identified during the two day conference. “It is incredible to realize that 220 people from different backgrounds in this industry all came up with the same common denominators, making it obvious that we are past the point where there are just one or two people saying there is a problem,” said Gluck. “Change is in the air and the momentum is clearly visible, with people already discussing which areas of this new initiative they plan to be involved in.” A key component of dramatic change was also put into play at the Amudim conference with the an-

Yarden 2T will reward all guests both as a perfect accompaniment to the meaty dishes of the seder and with precious few moments of silence as this “wise son” tries to ascertain the appropriate varieties within.

TYPE 3-THE QUIET ONE- THE SIMPLE SON We all know this personality, who seems to repeat his contributions year to year (is this night really different than all other nights?) Though his observations may seem, well, obvious, we can try and add some points to this son’s IQ by giving him a wine that is anything but simple: the Galil Mountain Meron. The Meron evolves during the meal as new flavors are expressed with every sip and is the ideal engagement to begin wine discussion. This strong and well-balanced wine exhibits a silky texture and a long velvety finish which fills the palate with its rich tastes and is the perfect companion to the seder plate’s lamb. Not only will the this wine greatly aid the “simple” son’s wisdom, after a cup or two of the Meron, you may find the brilliance of all the guests gathered round the table enhanced.

when asked a question, the seder is ultimately about engaging all of our company, thus securing the links in our tradition. Studies have shown that the glazed over look can be recharged with a good glass of fine, sweet wine. For “the one who does not know how to ask”, choose the Yarden Heightswine. This award winning wine is truly a dessert wine with a difference, compelling your guests to ask “why can’t all other wines be like this one?” The Yarden Heightswine is a delightful and rich vino comprised of an aromatic mix of tropical fruit flavors layered with honeysuckle, jasmine and a hint of spice, truly described as the ‘taste of Gan Eden’. Keep the all your guests awake and alert by the end of the seder without engaging in the search for the afikomen but simply by filling their glasses with this delectable choice.

NEXT YEAR, IN JERUSALEM!

While this guest may usually give a “deer in the headlights” look

With all personalities satisfied by wine, bring a unifying close to this wonderful evening. Anticipation (and attendance) for the year to come can be ensured by providing a vino that the whole table can raise a united glass and toast “next year in Jerusalem”. The Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon is an Israeli classic; a rich wine with complex flavors and a full body. Containing all the elements of a quality and elegant Cabernet, this, Israel’s favorite Cabernet Sauvignon, is the perfect choice to bring together the whole family.

PULLED BRISKET Meat ∙ Yields 6‐8 servings Ingredients 1 (3‐4 pound) second cut brisket 1 Tbsp prepared horseradish 1 Tbsp imitation mustard ½‐1 cup ketchup, to taste

What is Livescan Fingerprinting? Livescan is an inkless fingerprinting process where fingerprints are electronically transmitted to the Department of Justice for background screening. Ink fingerprinting is still required in many states. However, as a result of legislation passed in 1997, the California Department of Justice (CA-DOJ) has developed the automated background check process, which requires Livescan fingerprints for criminal history background checks that may be required as a condition of employment. Livescan technology replaces the ink process of recording fingerprint images. The CA-DOJ may also forward Livescan fingerprints to the FBI if required.

Who Needs Livescan? Livescan may be required as a condition of employment for: Teachers, Care Givers, Contractors, Security Guards, Nurses, Doctors, Surgeons, Real Estate Licensees, Appraisers, Notaries, DMV Licensed Professionals, Foster Parents, Stock Brokers, Volunteers, and anyone applying for a professional licensing, certification, or permit. Persons applying for foreign adoptions or VISA/Immigration clearances may also need Livescan processing.
