About the Chamber
ENHANCING OUR COMMUNITY
T
he Springboro Chamber of Commerce is located in the historic district of downtown Springboro, which is famous for its involvement in the Underground Railroad. Settled by Jonathan Wright, who was a member of the Quaker community, Springboro residents aided escaped slaves on their way to freedom in Canada in the 19th century. The Chamber of Commerce exists to enhance and improve the business community in the Springboro area. Membership is over the 500 mark: 65 percent in Springboro, 30 percent in neighboring communities within 10 miles, and 5 percent outside of the 10-mile radius. Companies who do business in the Springboro area rely on the Chamber for resources, weekly networking opportunities, marketing and promotional support, and a wide range of benefits and services that save them money. The Chamber is also the Tourism center for Springboro, carrying dozens of brochures promoting area attractions, recreation, historical sites and lodging. Springboro, Ohio and Warren County maps are available at no charge. The Chamber offers three large events each year. In March, Springboro comes alive with Warren County’s largest Business-to-Consumer Expo. Open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Expo is a free event. Over 200 Chamber member exhibitors fill gym and common spaces with exhibits and include companies large and small, restaurants and bakeries, and nonprofit organizations. In late May or early June the Chamber hosts their annual Golf Outing at Heatherwoode Golf Club. Chamber members and their families, friends and clients join the staff and board members in a day of golf, the proceeds of which support the Chamber of Commerce In October, the Chamber Annual Gala Dinner is always a fun-filled evening, one of the few dress-up occasions in Springboro. Each year this event has a theme, and attendees are encouraged to come dressed and ready to enjoy good food, good company and support the Springboro Chamber of Commerce Live and/or Silent Auctions. hen it comes to growth, opportunity and quality of life, few cities can boast the way Springboro can. Named one of the nation’s best small towns several times in the past few years, Springboro takes pride in its rich history and at the same time keeps building for the future. No longer is Springboro known as a two street town with one light. Over 500 businesses call Springboro home, and this number includes international and national headquarters of major corporations, as well as sole proprietor and family owned mom-and-pop shops. Located immediately off Interstate 75, with two exits serving the north and south sides of town, Springboro offers tranquil suburban living with small-town charm, but with quick access to all the resources of two large cities: Dayton, 15 miles to the north, and Cincinnati, 41 miles to the south. That prime location has helped Springboro become one of the fastest-growing communities in the region. Its population has increased from 5,000 to approximately 18,000 over the past 15 years. The median home cost in Springboro is $224,000, and the cost of living is well below the U.S. average. The population is spread evenly too, with young families to a growing elderly population, which makes a nice balance within any community. Springboro Community schools have received an Excellent rating from the state of Ohio 11 out of the past 12 years.
With more people comes more business, especially within the last two years with the addition of the I-75 exit on the northern edge of the community, known as Austin Boulevard. While the new intersection is not strictly part of Springboro, transportation to and from businesses on the north side of town, as well as employee access, makes for good business growth. Springboro Community City School District is embracing the future, investing more than $1.1 million in upgrades to technology, including wireless access and more than 1,100 new computers. Springboro High School has been named one of the best in Ohio by U.S. News & World Report, and studies are enhanced by arts and sports programs. Health Care HIGH-QUALITY FACILITIES MEET MEDICAL NEEDS
S
pringboro has experienced a boom in growth over the past few years, and the higher number of residents has called for an increase in demand for medical services. Luckily, Atrium Medical Center is minutes away, just south off I-75 at the State Route 122 exit (513-424-2111). The hospital opened in December 2007, replacing Middletown Regional Hospital with an upgraded facility. Today, Atrium provides a variety of services, including a comprehensive community cancer program; mammography, maternity and other women’s services; a Level III trauma center; a primary stroke center; robotic surgery; sports medicine/orthopaedics; and advanced heart care, among others, in its 328-bed facility. “In addition to services provided on campus, we also offer convenient outpatient care at several locations in and around Springboro, including our sports medicine and physical therapy services at Coffman YMCA,” says Carol Turner, president and CEO for Atrium. “We know that people are looking for high-quality care that is convenient to home and work. We strive to offer this and more at all of our locations and physician offices.” Aside from just the main hospital facilities, Atrium’s campus is also home to Dayton Children’s Specialty Care Center - Warren County, Bidwell Surgery Center, Atrium Family YMCA, Otterbein Skilled Nursing and Rehab Neighborhood, and Greentree Health Science Academy. Nearby Miami Valley Hospital South offers similar services to Atrium Medical Center, and with good reason — both are part of the Premier Health system, as is EduCare, a primary care office located behind CareFlight field, by Springboro Junior High. Springboro is also home to SureCare, which offers both primary and specialty care.

Premier Health is a comprehensive health care system, including Atrium Medical Center, Miami Valley Hospital, Miami Valley Hospital South in Centerville, Jamestown Emergency Center, Good Samaritan Hospital and Good Samaritan North Health Center in Dayton, and Upper Valley Medical Center in Miami County. Another convenient hospital in the area is Southview Medical Center at 1997 Miamisburg-Centerville Road in Dayton (937-401-6000). The hospital has services including emergency medicine, maternity, imaging, pain management and even a sleep disorder center. The facility was named among the best regional hospitals in a 2012–13 list by U.S. News & World Report. For the region’s youngest residents, a Dayton’s Children’s Hospital Outpatient Care Center can be found close by at 3333 West Tech Road in Miamisburg (937-641-5725). Some of the services offered at the facility include occupational therapy, physical therapy, audiology, urgent care, laboratory/pathology, medical imaging/radiology and rehab services.

n all possible aspects, Springboro stands out as a great place to invest in residential real estate. “Springboro is attractive to both the local and relocation buyers and an excellent place to live for so many reasons,” says Jenny Knott of Coldwell Banker Heritage Realtors. The area, which is located at the core of the Cincinnati–Dayton metroplex, boasts an array of housing options available to first-time home buyers, move-up buyers and empty-nester downsizers alike. Whether you’re in the market for a condominium, a modest single-family home or a newly constructed luxury home, this fast-growing city has plenty to offer at a wide range of prices. According to Trulia, the average listing price for homes was $299,312 in June 2014. Springboro has consistently been named as a top-selling area for real estate in the Miami Valley, Knott says. Knott cites Springboro’s easy interstate access as a major selling point for buyers. Located between the Dayton and Cincinnati I-75 and I-71 corridors, the city enjoys excellent highway access to businesses, hospitals, universities and Wright Patterson AFB. In January 2014, Springboro was voted one of Ohio’s Safest Cities by Safewise, which pulls its research from FBI reports nationally. Springboro also ranks highly on Cincinnati magazine’s list of the best suburbs in the United States and on Money magazine’s list of the best small towns in America.
According to Knott, Springboro offers the best of both worlds: all the charm and hospitality of a small town along with the convenience of a much larger city. “We have maintained a small-town feel while experiencing tremendous growth,” says Knott. “There are so many city-planned activities to bring everyone together, and there’s a strong sense of community here.”

n Springboro, you don’t have to go far to find the vestiges of days past. This little city is teeming with history, and local historian Helen Sproat is doing her part to ensure no one ever forgets. Sproat, the author of Freedom’s Trail: Springboro and the Underground Railroad, published in 2010, is the secretary of the Springboro Historical Society and has lived in the city for 50 years. She partnered with the Springboro Chamber of Commerce to produce a brochure for a self-guided Underground Railroad tour of the city’s historical district, detailing the vast network of safe houses and tunnels and telling the stories of the numerous residents who helped runaway slaves reach freedom. The tour starts in the Historical Society’s museum at 110 S. Main Street (937-748-0916), then moves on to a seven-block walk up and down Main Street before finishing at Heatherwoode Golf Club, where tour participants can enter the Null log house, a former safe house and the oldest onsite exposed log building in Warren County. One of the most interesting stops on the tour is the Jonathan Wright House, the oldest house in Springboro, built by the city’s founder in 1815. Now a bed and breakfast, the grand structure has a trap door in the attic that would have helped hide runaway slaves. Sproat has also developed a program especially for third graders, who study the Underground Railroad in class. She says she often finds herself educating adults who were totally unaware of the town’s historical significance.

“Through the school tours, quite a few of the parents will come, and they’re so impressed because they had no idea (the Underground Railroad) was here,” she says. “The kids come in eager to hear more about it, and that’s just super. But their parents often are quite surprised and tell me afterward they had no idea that Springboro had such an important little spot in history.” More than 30 Springboro citizens have been verified as active “conductors” from 1815–65, and the city has 27 authenticated Underground Railroad sites, with 19 safe houses still standing. “Because Springboro has stayed a rural town rather than becoming a more populous city, it still has many, many of its original, early-1800s buildings,” Sproat says. “It’s just a treasure trove for history.” The people who made Springboro a safe haven for runaway slaves may be long gone, but Sproat and the city will do everything in their power to make sure their legacy survives for generations to come.

PARK PLAZA Many of the city’s first homes, built in the 1800s, have been converted into quaint shops. Home furnishings, candles, art glass, seasonal decorations, children’s and women’s clothing, and gifts of all kinds are among the district’s many offerings. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, the historic district is sure to satisfy. Local bakery The Cake Ladies sells breads, muffins, cookies, cupcakes and other goodies, while K&W Drive In is a great place to get ice cream and frozen yogurt. Other highlights in the historic

At ’Boro Bistro, diners can eat healthful, natural and delicious food in a cozy atmosphere at the quintessential family restaurant, which has become one of the most popular in the city. ‘Boro Bistro offers a variety of interesting wraps, paninis, burritos and more than a dozen gourmet-style pizzas. If you’re in need of catering services, their excellent lunch and dinner specialties will ensure your event goes without a hitch. Soooo Good Gourmet Café (75 N.
