One of the reasons for Kirksville’s success is a focus on growing business and industry, including the creation of programs like K-REDI

(Kirksville Regional Economic Development Inc.), whose primary goal is to seek out new businesses and industries while assisting those that already exist. K-REDI’s boasts many recent accomplishments that have boosted the economic strength and quality of life in the community, including: • Bringing in new industries like Cenveo, an envelope company; North Missouri Tire; and Martiz, as well as assisting Ortech with its expansion.

• Rallying the community to raise $100,000 toward building AT Still University to the area. • Obtaining certification for the Kirksville Industrial Park, making it an AT&T Fiber Park.

BUILDING SMALL BUSINESS THROUGH THE MREIC www.mreicenter.org

The MREIC (Missouri Rural Enterprise & Innovation Center) was put in place to help the

small business sector. Their mission is to promote the growth of small businesses by helping them find resources to not only stay in business, but to expand if they desire. Throughout the program’s existence, they have helped vineyards, restaurants and downtown diners. Additionally, the Small Business & Tech Development Center helps aspiring entrepreneurs with creating and developing their ideas. “The program meets a gap,” said Executive Director Dan Hamlet. “Finding funds isn’t easy.” The program provides a forum that helps businesses bounce their ideas off experts, at no cost to them. It’s invaluable assistance for small businesses, as 60 to 70 percent of them fail within the first year. “If we can move that gap even a little bit, it’s worth the time,” said Hamlet.

SECURING A SKILLED WORKFORCE Kirksville isn’t only concerned with the growth of its businesses, but with the people who are employed in them as well. The National Work Ready Community Certification program ensures workers have the skills needed by business. Tests place applicants into different categories and award them certificates at bronze, silver, gold or platinum levels. Among the criteria are tests in subjects like reading, locating information and mathematics. Based on these test results, employers have a better workforce from which to choose. The program is part of a national push for communities to show that that they have a workforce that is skilled and ready for the jobs of the 21st

century. Kirksville and Adair County are working to meet the goals that have been set down and hope to become a Work Ready Community by December 2014.

DEVELOPING DOWNTOWN Kirksville is also concerned with the appeal of the city, which is why the Kirksville Downtown Improvement Committee (KDIC) was put into place. KDIC is a volunteer group that is responsible for the appearance of the downtown area. “Everyone should know that a thriving and attractive downtown makes for a strong and proud community,” said Justin Tallman, president of KDIC. As a group, KDIC works to get more business owners, property owners and the public involved in the downtown area. Initiatives such as window decorating contests not only inspire businesses to, but also draw residents downtown to see the sights and browse the shops. The committee also looks for ways to welcome incoming students of Truman State and A.T. Still University and show them all that downtown Kirksville has to offer. KDIC has been working directly with the universities’ leadership to collaborate on what Kirksville can offer to the schools, and vice versa.

KIRKSVILLE REGIONAL AIRPORT www.kirksvillecity.com/kirksville-regional-airport Kirksville Regional Airport is another of the region’s vital economic development assets. A 2013 study by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) states that the airport has a total payroll of about $2 million and a total positive economic output to the community of over $6 million. Not only is the airport a source of financial growth, it has also been the gateway to bring state leadership, including the governor, on visits to Kirksville, making it an important tool in the arsenal of local leadership. Further, with Cape Air providing three daily flights to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, the airport is an invaluable hub for regular business travelers. Recent improvements have been made to its parking lot and runway because of the increased traffic flow through its terminals. Cape Air reports a 3 percent rise in passenger numbers from 2012 to 2013, with future bookings increasing 13 percent. The airport is also investing in new LED runway lighting, with 95 percent of the funding being provided by MoDOT.

RELOCATION & REAL ESTATE Extending a Warm Midwestern Welcome

n tough economic times there are many reasons why families decide to move from one location to another, and there are even more factors to consider when choosing where to live. People raising families consider the safety of their children. Those couples who are just starting out are in the market for something small and affordable. Others may be looking to invest where the housing market continues to grow. Nowhere is more capable of meeting all of these needs than Kirksville. Local real estate agents cite a number of reasons newcomers give for coming to the region, from the abundant outdoor activities, to the presence of excellent education, to the appeal and charm of the region’s heritage and history, to the affordable cost of living and more. As the region’s center for education, health care, and industry, Kirksville is the primary magnet. Low crime rates, a scenic downtown atmosphere and a nationally award-winning public school system are among the first bonuses to catch the notice of homebuyers. The city’s population has grown more than 3 percent in just 10 years, leading to a surge in the housing market. Builders are responding with new developments, including improvements to the popular Weatherstone Subdivision, where a series of beautiful new homes are currently under construction because of the increasing demand for houses. There are also a number of homes under construction on South First Street and Emmett Street. Buyers can also find historic fixer-uppers and established neighborhoods, and a variety of budgets can be met, whether one is looking for a family-friendly starter home or a luxury executive abode boasting abundant square feet and all the amenities. Rural acreage is plentiful as well. But what the Midwest might be most famous for is its warm welcomes. You’ll find those in Kirksville, too.

Accredited by the American Osteopathic Association and the Society of Chest Pain Centers, NRMC provides quality care with more than 100 physicians in a range of 40 specialties and subspecialties. Cardiology, orthopedics and minimally invasive surgeries rank as top services. In a collaborative effort, NRMC and Northeast Regional Heart Center provide 24/7 cardiology care, including cardiac catheterization and intervention in the newly expanded cardiovascular center. Newly renovated medical/surgical floors, OB/Nursery Units and Women’s Center are pivotal in providing patient and family comfort, close to home. Other services include an accredited Chest Pain Center, a 30-minute or less Emergency Services pledge, a Pain Clinic and Wound Care Center. A two-time winner of the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospital award and a 2009 Everest award, Northeast was also the recipient of Becker’s Hospital Review’s America’s 50 Best Hospitals award in 2011. LOCAL PROVIDERS ARE GROWING AND EXPANDING Kirksville’s medical community continues to grow as providers add new offerings and new facilities.

Northeast Missouri Health Council Late 2012 was an exciting time for Northeast Missouri Health Council (NMHC), which opened yet another Kirksville facility. Located on West Jefferson, the brand-new, $4 million building provides approximately 22,000 additional square feet for growth of the organization’s local clinics. Housed at the new facility are NMHC’s OB/GYN Specialty Group, which now has twice its original clinical capacity thanks to the move, and Northeast Pediatrics. Also moving to the new facility was NMHC’s Northeast Dental Clinic, which increased from eight operatories to a total of 12. The dental clinic now has room to add six more operatories in the future, as needed, to accommodate clinical training that will be done on site as a result of the clinic’s new partnership with the dental school at A.T. AN OUTDOOR ENTHUSIAST’S PARADISE The area surrounding Kirksville is a patchwork of agricultural fields, brushy draws and oak-hickory forests, interspersed with creeks, ponds and lakes. This environment creates ideal habitat for many wildlife species and has brought the town national acclaim as a hotspot for outdoor enthusiasts. Wildlife conservation, hunting and fishing aren’t just talking points in Northeast Missouri, they’re an integral part of the Adair County lifestyle and culture. In many regions of the United States, hunting participation suffers more from a lack of access than a lack of interest, but Northeast Missouri provides easy access to an abundance of public lands. The combination of the Big Creek, Sugar Creek and Montgomery Woods conservation areas positions approximately 4,000 acres of public hunting land just minutes from Kirksville, and a portion of the more than 8,100 acres of Union Ridge Conservation Area overlaps the northwest corner of Adair County. Just east of the county’s northeast corner, Indian Hills Conservation Area also offers nearly 4,000 more public acres for sportsmen. Matt Wolken, the protection regional supervisor at the Department of Conservation’s Northeast Region Office in Kirksville, points out that in

addition to Pittman-Robertson Act funding and revenue from hunting and fishing license sales, the conservation budget gets a big boost for expansion and sustainability from a long-standing Missouri sales tax. “The one-eighth of one percent sales tax that is dedicated to the Missouri Department of Conservation, which voters approved back in the 1970s, is what has allowed the department to make all of this public land available to hunters,” Wolken explained. “Missouri is one of only two states in the nation that has that, and it made it possible for the department to purchase and maintain these tracts. We’re blessed here to have that possibility and to have these conservation areas in our region.” Thanks to its prime mix of habitat and sound conservation practices such as antler restrictions, the region has a reputation for sustaining a large and balanced deer herd, with many mature bucks taken by hunters each season. And while the whitetail may be king in Kirksville, small game hunters and wild turkey hunters also have good opportunities. “After a number of down years for turkey production, we had a good spring in 2012, with increased nest success and a lot of young birds in the bag. I think we’ve got another good hatch again this year, so it should continue to improve,” Wolken said.

Families who enjoy fishing will find ample opportunities for largemouth bass, crappie and catfish, as well as unique offerings like trout fishing at Spur Pond, muskies at the 530-acre Hazel Creek Lake, and walleye fishing at Thousand Hills State Park’s 573-acre Forest Lake. Many other small lakes are within an hour’s drive of Kirksville, and in the northern part of Adair County, the Chariton River offers good set line fishing for channel and flathead catfish. Other types of outdoor recreation such as camping, hiking and biking are also available on most of the region’s public lands, with Thousand Hills State Park being a favorite location for many of these activities. The park’s developed campgrounds, cabins, dining lodge, 10.5-mile trail, beach, paved boat ramp and ancient petroglyphs make it a popular destination. Visitors who want to stay in the midst of the region’s outdoors adventures without “roughing it” have a number of comfortable lodges to choose from. Some, such as Twin’s Hunting Lodge, Young’s Lodge and Medicine Creek Hunting Lodge, offer hunting services right on their property for an all-inclusive experience. he shopping and dining environment in Kirksville offers national chains and bigbox names you will recognize as well as family-owned shops and eateries where you’ll find unique items and local flavor. The main thoroughfare through Kirksville is Business 63 — also known as Baltimore Street — and many of the national chain retailers and restaurants in town are located along that stretch. However, Kirksville’s downtown square area, just a few blocks north of Truman State University, along Marion, Franklin and Main streets, also offers good shopping at small boutiques and specialty shops.
