he revitalization of downtown Durham has been on a fast track over the last 10 years. According to Bill Kalkhof, president of Downtown Durham Inc., over 3 million square feet of office space has been renovated since the Downtown Master Plan was implemented in 2000. More than 14,000 people now work downtown, and the number of residences has increased to over 1,000. What was once a forlorn area of abandoned warehouses has been transformed into a vibrant place to live, work, and play, with more exciting changes still to come.

American Tobacco Historic District This former tobacco warehouse has been transformed into a complex of offices, shops, and restaurants, with a scenic waterway running through it.
