The Branch County Economic Growth Alliance Mission The Branch County Economic Growth Alliance (BCEGA) mission is to create, retain and expand jobs in Branch County by attracting new industries to the county, assisting local industries in expansion efforts, and creating an environment where businesses and industry can succeed.

The primary road through Branch County is Interstate 69. The I-69 expressway connects Branch County with the city of Battle Creek 35 miles north on I-94, to the city of Lansing, 60 miles to the north on I-69, and the Indiana border, I 80/90 approximately 11 miles to the south. US-12 provides east-west access across the lower southern quarter of the State and threw Coldwater. Branch County is ideally located to serve the supplier and market needs of companies in diverse industries. Almost half of the nation’s population and income is within 500 miles of Coldwater. In addition, many of Canada’s major population centers are within a one-day drive.
Air
The Memorial Airport, operated by Branch County, is located in Coldwater Township, roughly two miles west of the city. Built in the 1940s, the two runway airport recently extended the main runway to 4,700 feet and lighted all runways. Located to the west of Coldwater on US-12, the airport is a general aviation airport with two bituminous concrete runways and a grass runway. The nearest airport with commercial service, the Kalamazoo / Battle Creek International Airport, is approximately 50 miles from Coldwater. In 2011, Coldwater successfully recruited Mastronardi Produce. This Canadian company is building its first major Greenhouse in the Midwest. Using the latest technologies from around the world, this facility will be capable of growing gourmet greenhouse vegetables year round. A family owned and operated company; the Mastronardi family pioneered the greenhouse industry in North America back in the 1940s. The company currently owns and operates greenhouses in Illinois and Colorado and has chosen Michigan as their next growth area. President,

A
s a Coldwater native and a Coldwater High School graduate, it is exciting to be back in Branch County, living and working in Coldwater. After graduation from CHS, and then from Michigan State University, my wife and I spent our next 40 years working and living in Lansing, metro-Atlanta, New York City, and then the Detroit area. Since moving back to Coldwater in 2011, we have quickly been accepted into the community and I have re-started my business here. After working two years on Madison Ave., in Manhattan, it’s a different environment, but still exciting, to be working in downtown Coldwater. As an entrepreneur, it is important to be involved in the business community, but to also contribute to the overall growth and success of the area. I have attempted to do that, by moving my business into Coldwater’s downtown, and by volunteering time to serve on the Branch Area Chamber of Commerce Board, and it’s Executive Board. However, when it comes to business, Coldwater offers all the tools necessary to support that environment, and to help businesses grow and prosper. While the Chamber of Commerce is just one of those tools, it is a valuable resource that should be utilized for all of its advantages by every business leader in the community. In fact, just one of the many offerings of the Chamber will usually cost-justify a business membership, and there are many offerings. From the free web-sites, to the monthly networking events, to regularly-scheduled seminars where business or political leaders share their views, the Chamber offers value. And, the simple camaraderie of shared memberships with other community leaders, should, by itself, justify a membership in this organization. E
nter any Branch County school, and you’ll find modern and safe classrooms, dedicated teachers and administrators, bright and attentive students, and parents actively participating in their children’s education. Branch County residents know that the continued prosperity of their communities depends on a well-education work force, and to that end they generously support their neighborhood school systems. With about 3,000 students, Coldwater Community Schools is the county’s largest school district. The Class A district comprises an ESL Early Childhood Center, two K-3 buildings, one 4-5 building, one 6-8 middle school, and 9-12 high school. In addition, Coldwater Community Schools administers an alternative high school, a 3 year old program and adult education. Quincy Community Schools enrolls about 1,300 students in its K-12 program. The Class C district has a K-4 elementary school, 5-8 middle school, and a 9-12 high school About 1,068 students attend classes administered by the Union City Community Schools
facilities include two K-4 elementary schools, a 5-8 middle school and a 9-12 high school. The Class C district’s Community Learning Center houses a preschool, young-fives program and an alternative high school. Bronson Community Schools enrolls 1,146 students in its K-12 program. The district includes three elementary schools, divided into programs for K-2, 3-4 and 5-6, and a 7-12 junior/senior high school. The Class C district draws students from an approximately 180 square mile area. Area school districts receive special education and career and technical programming, teacher training and other services from the Branch County Intermediate School District. The ISD’s Branch Area Careers Center is a focal
point for job training and adult education, offering courses in more than a dozen fields ranging from computer-aided design to criminal justice. The Careers Center’s articulation agreement with community and state colleges, universities, the military and apprenticeship programs offer high school students opportunities to earn college credit and valuable, hands-on training at the center’s state-of-the-art facility. In addition to well-rounded classroom instruction, local schools provide students with a range of extracurricular opportunities, including competitive athletics, and academic, music and art clubs. Branch County parents can also choose to send their children to one of the area’s private or public academies.

which is based in Battle Creek and offers a variety of courses in Coldwater at the Grahl Center. KCC offers dozens of pre-professional transfer classes, 36 associate degree programs and 31 certificate programs in the fields of health, education, business, computer technology, industrial trades and more. The college offers customized training for area businesses and fast-track programs for working people. It also has an ever-changing range of short-term classes for retirees, youth and others who want to learn about a topic without pursuing a degree. Baker College, a not-for-profit institution and the largest private college in Michigan, provides area residents with high-quality higher education in Coldwater. Career programs include the following: early childhood education, cyber security, Microsoft networking professional, computer networking technology/Microsoft option, medical insurance specialist,

Pansophia Academy enrolls about 310 students in a K-12 program. The academy also offers before-and after-school daycare. Opened in Coldwater in 1995, the public charter school is housed in one building. Due to student enrollment increasing, building expansion is being considered for 2014. St. Charles Borromero School, in Coldwater, offers K-6 Catholic programming, with plans to expand to seventh grade. Recently reopened, the school occupies two buildings used by the original St Charles Catholic School, which operated from 1911 to 1969. A Catholic education is also offered at St. Mary’s Assumption School in Bronson. St. Mary’s enrolls about 90 students in grades K-8, and about 20 in a preschool program. Woodland Seventh Day Adventist School enrolls about 15 students in its 1-8 school located in the country outside Coldwater. The school plans to add 9th and 10th grades. Area students needn’t travel far to continue their education at Kellogg Community College,
medical assistant, accounting, business administration/accounting concentration, management and medical office administration. Baker College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. As a career college, the Baker College system is pleased to report that 97 percent of its available graduates are employed.

Business Education Partnership The Business & Education Partnership (B.E.P.) was founded in 2012 by the award winning Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Tina Kerr (2013 Chairman of the Board for the BCACC). With her vision and joint partnership with the Branch County Area Chamber of Commerce, we have begun the initiative of bridging the gap between education and business, as we address the tough questions needing answers within our community. This moves us toward better succession planning, business growth, and a more viable economic realization through the partnerships made in the B.E.P. The Branch Area Chamber of Commerce is working to create mutually beneficial links between education and business by managing high quality parternership programs. ranch County residents are fortunate to have a number of quality healthcare facilities close at hand. From prenatal to end-of-life care, providers are available locally. Since opening its doors in 1939, the Community Health Center of Branch County (CHC) has grown into an acute care medical facility campus spread over 28 acres just east of downtown Coldwater. The county-owned hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (TJC) and offers state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging, full laboratory services, cancer center, home health and hospice care, physical therapy and rehabilitation, inpatient behavioral health, sleep center, wound healing center, pediatrics, substance abuse treatment, and more. The hospital also has four clinics: two family practice, one internal medicine, and one pediatric practice. CHC’s highly qualified medical staff of over 100 physicians provides patients with expert inpatient and outpatient care ranging from obstetrics to hospice, and including anesthesia, general and vascular surgery, internal medicine, radiology, neurology, orthopedics, pediatrics, oncology, family practice, and emergency care. Affiliate and consulting staff provide care in the specialties of allergy/immunology, cardiology, plastic surgery, infectious diseases, pediatric neurology, and pulmonology. CHC also administers and hosts several health education and support groups.
The First Presbyterian Church of Coldwater hosts a free health clinic every week for those unable to obtain primary healthcare and dental care elsewhere. Local physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, and community members staff the clinic. Dental care is available within each community in Branch County through private providers offering adult and pediatric services as well as orthodontics. There are also several chiropractic practices in the county. Branch County has two nursing homes. Maple Lawn Medical Care Facility is a county-owned facility with 114 beds. It offers long-term care and inpatient rehabilitation. The Laurels of Coldwater is a for-profit facility with 169 beds. Both score above average on quality measure ratings on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Nursing Home Compare website.There arealso several licensed adult foster care and assisted living facilities in the county offering care for those not requiring acute medical care. Outpatient mental health services are available through Pines Behavioral Health, the community mental health service, as well as private practices with psychiatrists and licensed psychologists. Inpatient services are available through the Community Health Center of Branch County. The area is served for more advanced healthcare needs by Borgess health and Bronson Methodist Hospitals in Kalamazoo, the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, and Parkview and Lutheran hospitals in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Coldwater is home to Tibbits Opera House, the longest running, continuously operating community theater in Michigan. Tibbits Opera House is celebrating their 50th anniversary of summer theatre in 2013. Tibbits Opera House is also home to a Henry Lewis Clay art collection. The originals reside at the University of Michigan; replicas are prominently displayed throughout the theatre. The Amish community is widespread throughout Branch County. Amish bakeries, woodworkers, basket weavers and more are located here. Buggies are often seen driving down the road or hitched in front of businesses throughout the area. The Amish Meander, a map of the area’s Amish businesses, is available at the tourism bureau.

Ride the rails on one of two historic steam locomotives at The Little River Railroad in Coldwater. Built in 1911, ‘Locomotive 110’ is a one-of-a-kind, custom built locomotive and the smallest standard gauge Pacific type locomotive ever built. Most think of the Great Lakes or ‘up north’ for water activity and adventure, although this area offers more than 114 lakes, including two chains of lakes to float, fish or frolic. Tibbits Opera House
B
uilt in 1882, Tibbits Opera House is among the oldest theatres in Michigan. Rich in history and ambiance, the theatre features an exquisite restored French Second Empire façade. The intimate 499-seat theatre, offers nearly perfect acoustics and great entertainment year round. It is the center for the arts in Branch County. Tibbits has developed an outstanding reputation for its professional Summer Theatre now in its 50th season. USA Today called it one of “10 great places to see the lights way off Broadway.” The summer of 2013 offers “Grater Tuna,” “West Side Story,” “The Producers” and “The Foreigner,” all at very reasonable prices. For families, Tibbits offers Popcorn Theatre; classic stories presented by the professional resident company, on Fridays and Saturdays from mid June through early August. Through the rest of the year, Tibbits Entertainment Series offers a variety of touring performers and something for every taste. Tibbits’ Young Audiences offers programs both for and by area youth, as well as educational programs and opportunities for students to develop their interest in the arts. In addition to the programs sponsored by Tibbits, the theatre is used extensively by community groups presenting plays, musicals, concerts, dance programs, pageants and variety shows. Through these groups, area residents have numerous opportunities to participate in the performing arts. There is truly something for everyone on the Tibbits stage. In addition to the performing arts, there is also an active visual arts presence in Branch County. Arts Alive, an organization devoted to furthering opportunities in the visual arts for the community, hosts activities and exhibits which are open to artists in all mediums. They present Art Walks downtown in the fall and spring and have developed several community art projects. They present a variety of exhibits in the Tibbits art gallery, each featuring a fine array of regional artists.
