Abundance Manchester An award-winning local group is seeking willing workers to be paid in fruit!
Now in its third year, local urban fruit-harvesting group Abundance Manchester is approaching its busiest time of year, and needs your help! A small but dynamic voluntary project, and last year’s winner of the Observer Ethical Awards ‘Best Grassroots Project’, Abundance Manchester harvests surplus fruit and veg from gardens and allotments in South Manchester and distributes it (mostly by bike trailer) to local organisations that can use it. As the British season for allotment produce and garden fruit hots up, Abundance are looking for volunteers to come out on regular Saturday picking
sessions as well as seeking fruit trees and allotment produce to distribute.
“There are loads of ways to get involved” explains Josie Austin, who joined the group last year “We’ll be out harvesting produce every Saturday afternoon, when people can turn up for as little or as long as they want. We need trees to pick from, so people in the South Manchester area who have fruit they can’t use should get in touch. We’re also keen to help allotment holders find a home for gluts of produce, they can drop surplus stuff off to us at our base at Manchester Bridge Club on Palatine Road and we’ll distribute it.” “Picking is a lot of fun” added Agnes Beviz, another volunteer. “it’s a friendly group and it creates a really nice sense
of community. We leave the homeowner however much fruit they want to keep, we eat a bit as we go along, and we distribute huge amounts to local projects that struggle to access fresh fruit”. Allotment holder Christine Clarke at Bradley Fold allotments in Didsbury is a keen supporter of the group, and regularly takes surplus produce from the site to Abundance. “All allotment holders will know there are only so many courgettes you and your family can eat – well through Abundance those things you just have too much of go to very grateful recipients. It feels so much better than chucking them on the compost heap”. Just get in touch if you want to get involved or if you have surplus fruit for picking.

Village Dry Cleaners
Although there are some internet sites who claim to be expert wedding dress cleaners, it can be very risky to send your precious dress off to someone you have never met. There are also other dry cleaning shops which offer a wedding dress cleaning service, however we believe that very few have the machinery or the experience required – especially hard to come by in staff that work for a large chain of shops. The most important points to consider when choosing a dry cleaner for your bridal wear are: - Do I know where my dress is being cleaned? - Will I meet the person who will look after my dress? - Do the cleaners have years of experience and are they experts in their field? - Will they be able to advise me of the best way to clean and store my dress and warn me of any possible problems before they take my dress? - Can they clean and finish the dress to a high standard? If you come to Village Dry Cleaners the answer to all of these questions will be YES, our wedding dress expert has over 25 years experience in bridal wear cleaning, they will be able to advise you and will be the only person responsible for the care of your dress. We can also provide wedding dress storage boxes designed to protect and store your dress. We cater from off the peg to individually designed wedding dresses and all dresses are treated with the same care and attention to cleaning detail. We have an excellent reputation for the cleaning of bridal gowns/dresses and have been doing so for over 25 years. But, don’t take our word for it...have a look at some of our reviews on www.qype.com or on www. villagerdrycleaners.com and you’ll find comments like this one from Niki at White Closet in Didsbury “What can I say about Village Dry Cleaners? Just excellent! Amir, who owns the business, goes above and beyond what is expected and I can whole heartedly recommend his services.”

from Chorlton Bookshop
The Tiger’s Wife by Tea Obreht
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
Hope and Glory by Stuart Maconie
This book and its author are really flavour of the month. Luckily it lives up to the hype! I found this a moving story, mainly about the relationship between Natalia and her Grandfather, however what makes this a really unusual read are the myths and folklore that the author manages to weave in. If you are a fan of Isabel Allende then this could be a book for you.
Having seen a revival due to the upcoming Hollywood adaptation, this book is definitely worth a read. Set in the American prohibition era, young Polish American Jacob Jankowski finds his life suddenly thrown out of balance, and swaps the walls of his veterinarian college for a life on the move with The Benzini Brothers’ traveling circus.
He’s best known as a radio DJ, but Maconie’s been carving an estimable side career as a writer of non-fiction. No self-indulgent dabbler he, either: his real skill is as a word-smith. Previous books have covered the present-day North (Pies and Prejudice) and that elusive entity ‘middle England’ (Adventures on the High Teas).
Set against the backdrop of the most recent war in the Balkans the story weaves between reality and fantasy. One minute Natalia is on her way to deliver much needed medical aid to orphans the next we are caught up in a story about “The Deathless man”, who predicts people’s demise using a magic coffee cup!
Thus begins an elegantly written story that entices you behind the scenes of life on the road, warts and all. Jacob’s vivid relationships, his dangerous attraction to performer Marlene and his friendship with circus elephant Rosie create real warmth against the gritty male dominated world. Sara Gruen’s ability to so adeptly re-create this historical era is a real treat, and the time lapse between the old Jacob in his nineties and the young provides a refreshingly original structure. A heart warming story to entertain any reader.
This time out Maconie cherrypicks one key turning-point in British history from each of the past ten decades, by way of illuminating the evolution of our national character. But as well as choosing these key moments, he visits their geographical locations, so what emerges is as much about travel as it is about history. Amongst other places the journey takes us to Osborne House, Alexandra Palace, and the former Wembley Stadium. Along the way Maconie allows us to discover as much about his own character as we do about Britain’s.
Tea Obreht escaped from Yugoslavia during the war and has obviously used stories remembered from her past in her debut novel. It will be interesting to see what she chooses to write about next and how her career develops.

A J ADAMS FRUIT & VEG & FLOWERS A J Adams have been providing fruit and veg for Chorlton for over thirty years and is the longest serving tenant of the Precinct Centre. His parents met after the war (dad was a polish paratrooper, mum was in the Land Army) and with compensation from his dad’s pit accident they started a Fruit and Veg shop in Gt Western Street in Whalley Range.Tony later carried on the family business with his mother and then took over a shop in the Centre. (Formally the site of big Victorian houses). Many changes have happened over the years. His biggest seller used to be 56 llb sacks of potatoes and customers used to bulk buy items such as boxes of cauliflowers for
freezing. Nowadays flowers are one of his biggest sellers and Tony, Elaine and Wendy sell not only great value fruit and veg, but also the widest range of bedding plants in Chorlton. Regular Customers have included Bob Greaves and Tommy Docherty and Coronation Street stars can often be seen in the shop. Even Mrs Thatcher once popped by!
A J Adams offers 10% off to Tagpassiton cardholders (excludes pet food).
CHORLTON LOCKSMITHS Chorlton Locksmiths have been on the corner of Wilbraham Road for the last twenty-one years. The shop is run by Patrick (21 years) and Theresa (15 years) When asked how she became a Locksmith, Theresa explained that when she left school she walked the length of her high street in Hyde knocking on doors asking for work. Finally one shop offered her a job and when she looked up it was a Locksmiths! Many of you will have met the third longstanding member of this great team, Charley -Theresa’s King Charles Spaniel who likes to play her part in the running of the shop which she joined in 2001. The ethos of the team is simply summed up as follows; “Our aim is to help our customers in the best way we can. Our work includes fitting locks, key cutting, lock opening and many more locksmithing duties. We give good honest advice so if you don`t need a new lock or keys, we won`t sell you them...”
Chorlton Locksmiths offer 10% off to Tagpassiton cardholders (min 2 keys).

They live by the motto of ‘be healthy, look after yourself and have fun; wholefood is for everyone’ Their delightful oasis is the epitome of ‘slow shopping’; they want their customers to feel the warmth and calm and be happy to wander at leisure, sit down, have a chat and take the time to sign their friends book. Deliveries of organic veg boxes is a service they are happy to provide too.
Chorlton Wholefoods offers 10% off for spends over £10 to Tagpassiton cardholders.
Tagpassiton cards give you great savings time after time with fabulous independent traders in your local area, not only in Chorlton, but also in Didsbury, The Heatons, Levenshulme and Cheadle. The Tagpassiton scheme has also been designed to help community groups raise money; every £5 card bought from a charity, school or community group raises £2.50 for their cause. St John’s Catholic Primary School PTA uses the scheme to raise funds and Jean Genie is currently also donating profits from card sales to Beechwood Cancer Care. If you buy a card online 10% goes to a local charity too. Chorlton’s vibrant and independent businesses are working together to encourage us to consider the community balance when we spend - so come along and join in and support a community group at the same time!

JP & Brimelow
Welcome to Life in Chorlton The long, hot summer that often seems to drift lazily into September and October, is a great time to be moving home. It’s warmer, brighter, gardens look better and people tend to be more cheery. That means that everyone else’s homes are looking better too, so its no time to be relaxing and expecting the sunny weather to do all the hard work by putting people in a buying mood, it’s a great time to give your home a real lift. In this, my first editorial 2011, I look at ways in which Chorlton-Cum-Hardy can help in the selling and buying process by attracting potential relocating buyers, families and professionals into the area. When the sun comes out the desire to spend more time outdoors, so I visit local shops for ideas, I cover topics of moving house and gardening tips inthe summer. Enjoy this bright & breezy issue and I look forward to assisting you in your next home.

Gardening
Wise with Water! If you are selling your home in the summer months then it is even more important to keep your garden looking at its best while at the same time not wasting water. Lawns especially can suffer if it doesn’t rain and pots, that you have used to make the front of your home look inviting to buyers, will need to be kept in peak condition too.
Install a water butt Installing a water butt in your garden is easy, and quite inexpensive. Thousands of litres of rainwater fall on the average roof every year. Collect it in a water butt and use it on your garden. It’s better for your lawn and plants than tap water.
When watering the garden: • use a watering can instead of a hose • if you do use a hose, use a trigger to control the flow • water early in the morning or late at night so that water doesn’t evaporate in the heat of the day before it can reach the roots • weed regularly to make sure that watering helps plants and not weeds Do remember that these are the months to really enjoy your garden after the hard work of the Spring. So sit back and relax with a glass of something cold and enjoy what, hopefully, will be a fantastic summer and early autumn. If you’re not the naturally green fingered type, take a trip to Chorlton Nursery. Tucked away down an alley in a quiet back-water of Chorlton, lies this hidden gem. You’ll find friendly, helpful and expert advice. Stocking over 600 varieties of herbaceous perennials, shrubs, alpines, heathers, bulbs, climbers, roses, conifers, and cottage garden plants. A delight to wander round, staff can help you choose the perfect plants for your garden. It’s a lovely little oasis away from the hustle and bustle of city life. visit www.chorltonnursery.com

Moving House
....in an Eng lish Summer Moving House can be a special kind of torture at the best of times, and our beautiful English summers reserve their own special ‘add-ons’ to both the selling period and the moving out day. When it comes to moving there are positives and negatives with summer weather. On the plus side it means you air your home by opening windows and letting light in. Getting things packed up and ready to move is far less stressful when the sun is shining.
Al Fresco The Barbakan Delicatessen has recently expanded the outside dining terrace where you can enjoy coffee, tea, juice or a smoothie with your favourite snack from the deli or linger for longer whilst the removals are packing up and you can watch the world go by. LETS be having you We’ve all got little things that we’ve been meaning to sort out for ages, little things that would make life that bit nicer or easier. The broken cupboard we know could be mended, but aren’t quite sure how to do it. The language we always meant to learn. The favourite suit with years of wear left in it, if only that seam was sewn back up properly. Trouble is, sorting these things out always seems to cost money, or involve having a go at something we’ve got no idea how to do. Then again, there are things that we’re good at, and enjoy doing, but don’t get the chance. Some of us are dab hands at decorating, but rent and aren’t allowed to change the decor. Others love gardening, but haven’t got a garden. Others love baking, but find we never get through a whole cake on our own. A revived Manchester community organisation is looking to help people make the most of what they’re good at, and get a hand with jobs that they find more

tricky. Manchester LETS (Local Exchange Trading Scheme) is a system for exchanging goods and services without money. It works based on an alternative currency, the M, which people earn by providing something for other users, like a lift to the shops or a couple of hours of gardening, and can spend on things they need, like having their dog taken for a walk or a bit of DIY done. Using the M means that there is no need to find someone to do a direct swap with, as users can earn Ms from helping one person and spend them on getting help from another. Some Community Index readers may remember a previous Manchester LETS scheme from some years ago, based on paper cheques. Now technology is taking the strain, with all transfer of Ms done through a website (manchesterlets.org). Among the offers currently online are tool hire, homemade bread, eco-renovations advice, freezer meals, circus skills and accounting help. In the wanted
listings are driving lessons, hairdressing, local eggs, someone to put up a few pictures and help fixing a gate, as well as many others. The scheme’s Core Organising Team say it has a multitude of benefits, including the chance to save money, meet other people in your community and benefit from your underused skills. They are keen to hear from users of the original Manchester LETS and learn from their expertise, and also for volunteers to help publicise and run Manchester LETS. To use Manchester LETS, go to manchesterlets.org and sign up for an account by clicking ‘Use Manchester LETS’. If you don’t have access to the internet, phone 07906700114 and leave a message, and a member of the Core Organising Team will call you back.

August in your Garden by Katherine Watson Most gardening books suggest that August can be a less busy time in the garden – a relaxed lull amidst the frenetic work of adjacent months, where we can simply sit back and enjoy the fruits of our labour. That is, of course, assuming we have been consistently engaged in frenetic gardening in the months leading up to our well earned ‘holiday’ which, let’s face it, isn’t the case for most of us. So August could actually be the month where many of us find time to do a bit more gardening and there are plenty of things that can be done. The message of deadheading flowering perennials is a mantra that seems to be part of our cultural canon – something we know instinctively we should be
doing – and will gladly watch Carol Klein do it on TV, but never seem to get round to it ourselves. It’s really easy – pop out into the garden for ten minutes and pull/snip/snap off any spent flowers or developing seed heads – you won’t get it wrong even if you accidentally take out some newly developing buds – things come back. This will mean the plants will continue to flower and look good for longer. You can also start saving seed from seed heads of things that won’t flower again. Give it a go – on a dry day (!) take off any seed head of any flower that is looking brown and papery and bring it indoors for a day or so to fully dry out and then tap the seeds out of it and store in an envelope or something similar to sow next year.
At the end of August you can start planting some of your spring flowering bulbs – particularly of the daffodil family, but also colchicums and hardy cyclamen. Daffodils (narcissi) recommence their root growth in late summer so it’s good to give them a head start sooner rather than later. You can even start Hyacinths for Christmas towards the end of the month and into September. And there we have it, the first mention of Christmas in August – our perennial acceptance that we will never actually have a proper summer so we may as well reconcile ourselves to the slow march to winter! Transition Chorlton Transition Chorlton, part of Transition City Manchester and the wider International Transition Network, have been holding regular meetings for around 10 weeks in which we have discussed ways to build local resilience in areas such as transport, food, energy and recycling. We aim to bring together people to take part in something that at the very least will be a way to have fun and share new experiences, and at its most will follow in the footsteps of other successful and high profile transition towns in promoting Chorlton as a strong, resilient and sustainable community. We are organising regular monthly events, the first of which was a film night looking at cycling culture and the second a tree walk to identify new places in Chorlton to plant trees.
Get Involved! Come along to our open meeting on the first Thursday of every month 7:30pm at Lloyds Hotel on Wilbraham Road. If you come along (we’re the ones with the plastic dinosaur on our table – don’t ask!) we promise you with a friendly welcome, some inspiring conversation, and if you’re really keen maybe a few jobs to help plan and organise our forthcoming events! We’d also like to set up subgroups around areas such as food, energy, business and livelihoods, education, transport, health etc. If you cannot make it to the monthly meetings at Lloyds Hotel there are other ways to keep in touch with us. You can find us on Facebook at www.facebook. com/thetransitonchorlton or on Twitter @transchorlton. We will post news and views about what we have been doing and

information on upcoming events. Alternatively, you can email us at transitonchorlton@gmail. com to join our mailing list and to send in any suggestions, questions or comments you may have. Keep an eye out for us around Chorlton too, we’ll be out and about more and more over the coming months!
“More like a party than a protest movement” What’s a Transition Town? Founded in 2006 by Rob Hopkins, the Transition Towns movement seeks to create communities that are more resilient to the challenges of peak oil, climate change and economic contraction. Oil and fossil fuels are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive, requiring new ways of living our lives and managing our economies to reduce our dependence on oil. At the same time climate change is almost universally accepted by scientists to be one of the biggest threats to our present way of life. Despite the seriousness of these threats, the reaction of governments and institutions has been completely inadequate. Transition Towns are spreading rapidly; there are around 800 initiatives in more than 30
countries using the transition model to answer this massive question: “for all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how do we significantly increase resilience (to mitigate the effects of Peak Oil and global economic downturn) and drastically reduce carbon emissions (to mitigate the effects of Climate Change)?”

Chorlton Open Gardens Success! The sun shone for the first ever Chorlton Open Gardens day on Sunday June 19th. There was real warmth and delight on the ground, too, among the gardeners and the hundreds of local people and visitors who criss-crossed Chorlton, determined to see as many as they could of the 23 gardens, yards, and ‘yardens’ generously opened to the public. It was truly a day for sharing. Not only were the gardeners sharing their space, their expertise, their wild life or displays of colour but visitors, too, walking the streets with map in hand, could be found greeting fellow-visitors, identifiable because they were likewise studying their maps, plotting the best route from A to J, chatting to old friends or advising strangers on the must-see plots. Nearly 1000
programmes were sold and over £6,500 raised for the northwest branch of the charity formerly called the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture, now known as Freedom from Torture. Most visitors said they especially liked the variety of gardens included: large lawned spaces, wild gardens, tiny yards where every inch contributed to the variety of foliage and colour, roof tops, frog ponds, veg and flowers in mixed borders, and allotments- it was truly a Chorlton all-sorts. Lots of people were amazed at what lay behind the fronts of houses they had passed so often. Gardeners who went that extra mile and provided barbeques, exotic summer drinks, plant
