30 Make Some Plans

COVER: .............................................. Briones, a Readers’ Local Favorite ..............................................

It’s official. The Community Focus Readers’ Local Favorites contest is now a tradition! We are excited to present the results of our 2nd annual Readers’ Local Favorites poll. During the months of September and October, 2014, loyal readers had the opportunity to vote online for their favorites in 76 categories, from the homepage of our new website, www.ourcommunityfocus. com, where results can also be found. But hang on to this issue! You’ll want to refer to it again and again to find the best places to eat, get a drink or take a hike; see where locals go for skin care, a gorgeous new hair cut and color, or a relaxing massage. Where will you buy your next set of tires? How will you start (or re-start) your road to health and fitness in 2015? How do you decide who to trust with your financial, estate or tax services? Take the advice of your friends

and neighbors who voted for their favorite spots for happy hour, yoga classes and Thai food. Congratulate these businesses! They’ve worked hard to earn the accolades. And the next time you need to eat, shop, take care of your finances, take care of your health, a loved one’s health, or just relax, look to the Readers’ Local Favorites issue to help you decide where to go or who to see! You will certainly spot some of your old favorites, and hopefully, find some gems you didn’t know existed. The publishers would like to give a shout out to our readers for your enthusiastic response to our second “Favorites” issue, and congratulations to all the winners and finalists for being recognized for your exceptional products and services. The Local Favorites section begins on page 12.

AiN Angel Fund

Wells Fargo continues a long tradition of supporting the Martinez community and Martinez Education Foundation (MEF) by making a generous donation in the amount of $9,000 to MEF. Since 1994, Wells Fargo has contributed $150,000 to MEF. MEF would like to recognize Wells Fargo as an outstanding corporate citizen for their continued support of Martinez public schools and Martinez students. MEF encourages Martinez businesses, parents, teachers, students, and other community members to patronize Wells Fargo and express their appreciation and thanks the next time they do business with any Wells Fargo team member.

All in Need, Family Support (AiN) announced their very first recipient of the AiN Angel Fund on December 6, which was made possible by a generous donation from an anonymous donor. The AiN Angel Fund is a way to help families raising a child with special needs by relieving some of the financial burden. The AiN board considered all families who use AiN services and unanimously agreed to award the $1,000 Angel Fund to the McClanahan Family from Concord to help purchase a wheelchair accessible van for their youngest daughter who has Mitochondrial Disease. Mom, Elizabeth McClanahan said, “Words are still not coming to me after your generous gift toward the wheelchair lift van. We are humbled and honored to be the recipient of the All in Need Family Support’s 2014 gift. Thank you All in Need Family Support, board members and Autumn Green!” AiN’s mission is to provide support to families with children in the East Bay Area ages 18 and under who have special needs

Strategies for Sellers

Why Sellers Should Consider Pre-Sale Inspections BY GLENN ALLEN When putting your home on the market, it makes sense to have professional inspections done before potential buyers ever see it. Buyers generally order inspections after the home is in contract and the 30-day escrow clock is ticking away. An unforeseen issue at this point can result in the seller having to reduce the price or make unexpected repairs. Pre-sale inspections can result in higher offers, avoid delays and unexpected costs, and avoid the sale falling through. Professional home inspectors are trained to look at all systems that make up a house to detect what most people do not see. They look for hidden issues including those that pose health and safety concerns. A competent agent will help you consider home inspection, structural pest inspection, chimney in-

spection, and a sewer lateral inspection. Buyers feel more confident making an offer if they have a solid understanding of the home’s condition, and they are less likely to leave a buffer in the offer price to fix “unknown” issues. Bottom line: the more buyers know about a home, the more comfortable they are in offering more and following through with the transaction. Pre-sale inspections also give the seller time to find acceptable and affordable solutions to problems before having to negotiate with a buyer. Sellers can elect to fix problems discovered in the home inspection, provide bids to repair items, or not repair the items. Avoiding a “re-negotiation” after the contract is ratified is another advantage to having the home inspected. Buying a home is an emotional and scary experience for many buyers. If a home inspection comes up with a list of needed repairs, it can scare buyers away. If repairs are made in advance, they

either become a non-issue or the cost for the repair will be many times less than a buyer perceives it to be. If a seller chooses not to fix the problem, at least the buyer knows about it up front and can adjust their offer price. Another benefit is that pre-sale inspections can reduce the seller’s liability. If a buyer sues a seller, it is usually for “non-disclosure” of a defect they may or may not have known about. By completing the “Transfer Disclosure Statement” and the “Seller Property Questionnaire,” the seller discloses any defects or known repairs made on the home since living there. A home

inspection or other inspections can be a part of a seller’s complete disclosure package to ensure the buyer is aware of the condition of the home. As always, rely on your agent to give you good advice and recommendations about this very important part of your real estate transaction. A thorough set of inspections before you put your home on the market can help you sell your home faster for top dollar with less stress, aggravation, and worry. Glenn Allen, RE/MAX Real Estate agent, can be reached at glenn@TalkToGlenn.com, 925-709-1000 or visit www. TalkToGlenn.com.

Mock City Council Last November, Pleasant Hill Councilmember Michael Harris hosted over 100 third graders from Valhalla Elementary School as they conducted a mock city council meeting at City Hall. Student Mayor Ava Davis presided over the proceedings, and five councilmembers listened to testimony on a number of issues critical to Valhalla students. Councilmembers Misha Tikin, Shealyn Higgins, Sara Martin and Hunter Lee joined Mayor Davis on the dais. The council considered agenda items from other members of the third grade classes. Mrs. Kaput’s class discussed, “Should Valhalla build a higher fence

Inspection Traps

around the perimeter of the playground?” Speaking in favor was Cali Koehler. Speaking against was Abby Klinkner. Mrs. Snitselaar’s class discussed, “Should Valhalla provide each student with an iPad?” Speaking in favor was Matthew Northrup. Speaking against was Melissa Gomar. Mr. Thomas’ class discussed, “Should Valhalla have a science lab?” Speaking in favor was Maya Levy. Speaking against was Jason Detre. Councilmember Harris commented that he saw many future leaders in these third graders. By the way, there will be no science lab at Valhalla because “yucky chemicals might get on one of the students.”

11 Critical Home Inspection Traps to be Aware of Weeks Before Listing Your Home for Sale East Bay – According to industry experts, there are over 33 physical problems that will come under scrutiny during a home inspection when your home is for sale. A new report has been prepared which identifies the eleven most common of these problems, and what you should know about them before you list your home for sale. Whether you own an old home or a brand new one, there are a number of things that can fall short of requirements during a home inspection. If not identified and dealt with, any of these 11 items could cost you dearly in terms of repair. That’s why it’s critical that you read this report before you list your home. If you wait until the home inspector flags these issues for you, you will almost certainly experience

costly delays in the close of your home sale or, worse, turn prospective buyers away altogether. In most cases you can make a reasonable pre-inspection yourself if you know what you’re looking for and knowing what you’re looking for can help you prevent little problems from growing into costly and unmanageable ones. To help home sellers deal with this issue before their homes are listed, a free report entitled “11 Things You Need to Know to Pass Your Home Inspection” has been prepared which explains the issues involved. To order this FREE Special Report call toll-free 1-800-597-9215 and enter 1238. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Get your FREE special report NOW to learn how to ensure a home inspection doesn’t cost you the sale of your home. This report is courtesy of East Bay Residential Realty, BRE 01245396. As Russ Sees It Single!

BY RUSS CARROLL Remember the old days when you’d go skiing and holler out “single!” while standing in line to catch a ride on the chairlift? Some knucklehead would invariably holler back “married”! As a married guy dragging kids along, I never gave it much thought. Of course the only time I got to spend with the kids was during lunch or standing in line. The rest of the day they were off on their own and I couldn’t catch up with them anyway. Now that I’m single, this chairlift banter has a different significance. At first I was uncomfortable in my new role as a single person. However, over time I’ve grown accustomed to it. Actually, there are a few bright spots. For example, if a friend asks me to go out for an evening, I don’t have to ask anyone if it’s okay. As a married guy, it was never really about getting permission; it was about whether or not we had other plans. I am sure you’ve noticed that married guys need to “check with the boss” to see what their schedule is. Sure, your wife has probably already given you a headsup, but for a guy, being married is like being hearing impaired. The words kind of bounce off you. And you know

you don’t need to worry about it because you’re not going to make any plans without checking with the boss anyway. It’s like having a handler. The kids would ask me for permission to do something and I would ask, “Have you checked with Mom”? I would get a look from them like “Are you kidding? Do you think I would be standing here talking with you before talking with Mom? C’mon Dad, I know how this works.” I’d give them a fist bump and a hearty “If it’s ok with Mom, then its ok with me.” After all, I knew how it worked as well. Another benefit of being single is that I can spend as much time in the bathroom as I want. I can read the whole newspaper in there now if I wanted to -- and I probably would if there were a TV (although I’d become restless without Sportscenter). My shopping lists are really short; I only have to put gas in my own car; I sleep late on holidays; I no longer have any idea when it is someone’s birthday or anniversary (thank God for Facebook); and I can pass gas in bed without having to offer up an insincere “oops, sorry!” Every once in a while, I get a bit lonely and think about having a date or something, but it never seems to work out. I might have better luck if I were employed and wore long pants and

shoes and socks instead of shorts and flip-flops everywhere. The other day I was thinking, “Man, I can’t get a date and Charles Manson is getting married?” I guess it will work for them; she’ll always know where he is. There is a lot that I miss about be-

ing married and part of a family, but I am slowly adjusting, and it gets easier every day. I miss having a partner, but I am thinking a puppy might do the trick. But….that’s just how I see it. Russell Carroll can be reached by email at russcarrollemail@gmail.com.

Hour of Code at College Park

College Park Joins Mission to Introduce 100 Million to Computer Science Computers are everywhere and tech jobs are unfulfilled, yet, alarmingly, fewer schools teach computer science than they did ten years ago. That’s why a group of tech-aware College Park High School community members joined the largest computer science learning event in history, bringing two Hour of Code sessions to its students last month and the Community Focus was there to see it happen. “I first learned of the Hour of Code last February, when meeting with Valley View Principal Ean Ainsworth on a related issue regarding its technology focus at the middle school. Mr. Ainsworth mentioned VVMS’ involvement in the Hour of Code and it stuck with me all year,” said Kelly St. Germain, parent of a College Park student and Pleasant Hill Education Commissioner. When this year’s program, organized by the nonprofit Code.org, was announced, St. Germain recognized this turnkey opportunity to bring a snippet of computer science to the high school, and she approached the administration, PTSA and teachers to gauge interest. And the interest was burgeoning. With less than a two-week turnaround, a few College Park parents and staff collaborated and pulled off the after school Hour of Code event. Principal Paul Gengler was quick to throw in his support to help launch

the program, providing access to the computer lab, crafting a principal’s message to the Falcon community, and working with district personnel to thwart any potential technical issues. In addition, mathematics teachers Kathleen Strange, Mark Furtado, and Christopher Gray fervently embraced the program, helping to evaluate and select the lesson plans prior to the two Hour of Code sessions, and attending, hosting and proctoring the actual Hour of Code event. District personnel Joshua Wittman, director of technology support, and Nona Nattkemper, district site tech, were vital supporters, assisting the effort by ensuring proper student paperwork was on file and log in passwords were available, and technology was fully functional. Parent volunteers/PTSA members Joann Jacobs and Kelly St. Germain carefully orchestrated all logistics of the event. To create a high tech feel, iPads and touch-screen laptops were provided to allow students to sign in; Google online registration forms were created to capture students’ contact info and level of coding expertise; disposable ear buds were provided and “how to” instructions were developed. “We expected to see perhaps seven to ten interested students and were prepared to give them a true high-tech, high-touch, hands-on coding experience that would spark their interest in

computer science,” said St. Germain. “As the Hour of Code was about to begin, the handful of parents, teachers, administration and IT support anxiously prepared the new computer lab for the trickle in of the students. There was not a trickle of students, but a flood. Over sixty students enthusiastically took part in the first College Park Hour of Code! There is clearly a

communityfocus-ecomulch-ad-2014-8.pdf

student interest for computer science and technology, as well as a parent, teacher and administrative desire to meet this interest. We consider the event to be a huge success, and together, we look forward to bringing even more robust programs to our school,” beamed St. Germain. DFC’s Blue Places First

Diablo Futbol Club’s 03 Girls Blue Team placed 1st in their GU11 Silver 1 Division at the Norcal Premier State Cup Championship game on Sunday, December 7. Coached by Chelsea Stewart, the girls had a season of ups and downs, but came together and played great as a team in the final weekend of the Cup. Congratulations to Coach Chelsea and her team!

Coleman Signs

DVC Player Signs to Play Division I In what has seemingly become a new and welcome tradition, DVC student Sabrea Coleman has added her name to the list of women’s basketball players under DVC head women’s basketball coach Ramaundo Vaughn to have accepted a full basketball scholarship to a Division I university. Coleman, a 5’7 sophomore point guard, has signed a National Letter of Intent to Western Athletic Conference member Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. Coach Vaughn stated, “Sabrea came to us from an outstanding high school program at Deer Valley with the want to improve. Having watched Sabrea from the time she was a high school junior, we knew that if given the opportunity, a relationship could be mutually beneficial, and it has. I’ve known the coaching staff at Grand Canyon for several years, and they’re not only great basketball coaches, but even better people. I’m excited for Sabrea and her family.” Coleman is a returning All-Confer-

ence performer in the Big 8. Last season, she was the second leading scorer on the Vikings, with 12.7 ppg to go along with 4.0 rebs/gm and 2.7 steals/gm. With her signing, Coleman joins former DVC players Diane Moore (U. of Hawaii), Ty’Jae Chenevert (Louisiana Tech), and Annelise Ito (UC Riverside) as Division I recruits. Elena Ala, (Azusa Pacific) and Karley Menez (Simpson University) have also received scholarships at the Division II and NAIA levels.

DVC student Sabrea Coleman, #15, is headed to Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona.

MPHFC to Hold Tryouts Martinez Pleasant Hill Futbol Club celebrates the game of soccer. Soccer is competitive, it can be rough, and it instills both discipline and creativity; but at its heart, it should be fun to play. Our teams and coaches reflect this attitude. We strive for excellence while maintaining a sense of fair play. We train kids to be athletes, to compete, to think, to sacrifice, and to respect, but we recognize that your child’s ultimate pursuits in life will likely be determined off the field. MPHFC encourages its players to pursue excellence in all areas, not just on the soccer field. We are proud

of the fact that many of our teams stay together for many years with minimal turnover. MPHFC is holding tryouts for our girls teams between January and March. Our fall U12 team, Lightning, is looking to add three or four enthusiastic players. Lightning tryouts are January 25, from 11:00am – 2:00pm, at the Adventist Academy, 796 Grayson Road, Pleasant Hill. Tryouts for our older U14, U15/16 and U17 teams will be in February and March. Please register on our website at www.mphfc.com and check for updates on dates, times and locations.

Soccer Sisters Opponents on the pitch, but good friends off, College Park freshmen Jayna Jordan and Gabby Hair and Carondelet freshmen Sophie Harrington and Stephanie Neys competed in the JV Tournament at Heritage High School in Brentwood on December 5. Although the Carondelet JV team defeated CP 4-0, friendship and good sportsmanship prevailed.

Pictured LtoR: Jayna Jordan, Sophie Harrington, Stephanie Neys and Gabby Hair.

Caroling for Food During the holidays, the College Park High School A Capella Club went caroling for food. As they sang throughout the neighborhoods, they collected a truck full of food for the Food Bank of Contra Costa, and made many people’s evening with their entertainment. Congratulations for a job well done.

MPHFC is holding tryouts for players looking to grow their game & compete at the highest levels.

New Year Estate Plan Checkup Checking The List Twice BY DANIEL DuREE Happy 2015! As another year unfolds before us, we reflect on where we have been and look forward to where we are headed. If you are anything like me, there are a few things you resolve to accomplish in the coming year that you just didn’t quite get around to in 2014. For many people, estate planning is one of the items that lurks on the periphery of the subconscious “to do” list we all harbor. While it may seem daunting, the estate planning process is straight forward, and once completed, it can be checked off that list to make room for other, more exciting activities, such as cleaning out the shed or organizing your recipes. To make it easier on you, I have

compiled a list of estate planning issues to check on (and check off ) in the new year. 1. Do you have a revocable trust (and is it up to date)? A revocable living trust is crucial to avoiding the legal procedure equivalent of water boarding that is the California probate process. Make sure that all of your assets are currently held in the name of the trust or the trust will not function properly. 2. Do you have a will nominating guardians for minor children? It is vitally important to ensure that your children are raised by people (or a person) you choose. 3. Did you create a durable power of attorney for financial management? More than 75% of people that pass away do not have legal capacity to make decisions at the time of their death. Make sure to appoint an agent

to make financial, tax, and benefit decisions on your behalf in case you are incapacitated. 4. Are your beneficiary designation forms current? Retirement accounts, pensions, life insurance policies, and annuities are passed to others through a beneficiary designation form. Make sure that they reflect your current wishes. It is possible to designate a trust as a beneficiary so that assets will be distributed according to the trust distribution scheme. Going through this four-point checklist will ensure your assets are properly protected and your wishes are carried out should anything happen to you. If you need assistance, give me a call. I am happy to help. In a couple of short meetings, uncertainty can be traded for peace of mind. Wishing you and your family a

happy and healthy 2015 from the Law Offices of Daniel L. DuRee. Daniel L. DuRee is a third generation resident of Contra Costa County and a licensed attorney practicing in Walnut Creek. He can be reached at (925) 2101400 or visit www.DuReeLaw.com.

Travel Trends Three Picks for 2015

Welcome, travel fans, to 2015! I’m so excited for the New Year and the potential it holds for each of us. Travel enriches our lives through learning, exploring, and experiencing the world, and whether it’s the next town over or across the Atlantic, our view of life is forever enhanced. Here are my top three travel experiences for 2015: European River Cruising If you’ve heard about river cruising and are intrigued, 2015 offers more itineraries than ever! The beautiful Blue Danube is a perfect choice for the first time river cruiser. The AmaWaterways’ Vilshofen (Munich) to Budapest itinerary will take you through the heart of Germany, Austria, and Hungary. Visit the Benedictine Abbey in Melk; tour the Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna; and marvel at the iconic Budapest Parliament Building during a nighttime illumination cruise. Why AmaWaterways? Because it is an “allinclusive” experience, with meals, lodg-

ing, beverages (leaded and un-leaded) and excursions included in your price. Tuscan Culinary Walking Tour Experience gorgeous Tuscany through her people and cuisine! Backroads’ Tuscan Active Gourmet Walking Tour will take you on a journey that nurtures both your body and spirit. You’ll discover the secrets of Tuscan cooking and engage in the preparation of fresh farm-to-table meals that embody the flavors of the region. With three levels of walking activity to

choose from daily, this adventure can be customized to your own comfort level. Hawaii Through a Different Lens The Bay Area is fortunate to be so close to the lovely Hawaiian Islands! Many Californians have experienced one or more islands by land…but how about by sea? Norwegian Cruise Lines’ Pride of America sets sail from Honolulu and visits the Big Island, Kauai, and Maui. This is an amazing way to see multiple islands in just seven days, with the convenience of

Bruh

Prominent Term in Teenage Lingo

BY CARLY TREW, ALHAMBRA HIGH SCHOOL These days, kids are always throwing around slang words. The teenage vernacular is constantly changing and developing; new words are always surfacing and some terms change meanings altogether. Nowadays a popular term is “bruh,” a deviation of “bro.” Technically, these two terms are interchangeable, yet “bruh” has a tendency to be more dramatic and effective. “Bruh” can be used in a variety of ways as well. One who is hip with the modern youth lingo can use this term to address a friend, acquaintance, or even a stranger, express emotions and feelings, or even to express agreement or disagreement. Using “bruh” to address someone is a common way to use the word. Originally, when only “bro” was primarily used, one would say or yell, “Bro!” or “What’s up bro?” Now, kids are lucky enough to be able to say “Sup Bruh?” or even just simply “Bruh” to call out to someone. Sometimes, people have emotions that they just don’t know how to express. If it’s because they can’t find the appropriate word or because a word for their feelings doesn’t exist, there is no need to worry anymore now that “bruh” is around! “Bruh” can be used in a variety of ways to show a variety of emotions. For example, if one is overjoyed, they could throw “bruh” into their sentence and say it with an excited and positive tone in order to fit in with whatever they’re currently feeling. If someone were to ask someone else if they were excited for the upcoming home football game, they could reply with “Bruh, yeah I’m so pumped for it!” On the contrary, when

30

“bruh” is used with a sad or depressing tone, it works in a more negative way as well. For instance, if friends were talking during lunch after a hard math test, one of them may say something along the lines of “Bruh, I totally just bombed that test.” These are just two examples of how “bruh” could be used to show a range of emotions. One more popular way “bruh” is thrown around is to either agree or disagree with a statement. Someone could say “Bruh, I’m hella tired today,” and one could reply with either “Bruh, I feel you,” or even just “Bruh,” which means that they also feel the same way. If used by itself it would be said in a way that people know you are agreeing. The same rules apply when disagreeing. A disagreement can typically accompany a “nah” making it a “Nah, Bruh” or a “Bruh, nah.” To go along with the variety of uses of “bruh,” there are different spelling and length variations as well. For instance, to show a great deal of excitement, a teen could use “bruh” in all caps. If plain old “bruh” just isn’t cutting it, “BRUH” surely will, no doubt about it. Leaving the first two letters lower case and only capitalizing the last two letters, making it “brUH”, generally expresses growing excitement. To use this variation, “brUH” shows a more subtle emotion at first and then increasingly gets more dramatic. In addition to different spellings, there are different lengths. One could leave it short and original, of course, but sometimes a little more flare is needed. If a lot of emphasis is wanted on the word, lengthening it is the way to go. If a student told a fellow classmate that they had a test next period that they

january 2015 • ourcommunityfocus.com

were unaware of, they might reply with a “bruuuuuh” or even a “BRUUUH” if it was that big of a deal. Dragging “bruh” on allows the user to be even

more mundane or animated about the situation or action. Regardless of how it is used, “bruh” has become a part of language used by today’s youth.

Metabolism and Aging Does Our Metabolism Slow Down As We Get Older? BY ANNA DORNIER The other day a new client mentioned she is having difficulty losing weight as she gets older. She said when she was younger she could lose extra weight in just a matter of weeks pretty easily. We’ve all heard it before; people say their metabolism has slowed down with age. They may be right, and they may be wrong. There is a phenomenon called muscle atrophy associated with age, which is basically the loss of muscle mass as people get older. For example, if you or someone you know has broken a leg bone and has the injured region placed in a cast, the muscle in that part of the leg becomes a lot smaller compared to the muscle on the other, un-casted leg. This is where the saying “Use it or lose it” applies. The less you use a particular muscle, the less

32

muscle you’ll have in that area. Muscle burns more calories than fat cells, so when we lose muscle mass later in life, we also slow down our metabolism. Many studies have been done on aging, and Holly Van Remmen, co-author of an aging study at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, says, “Age-related muscle atrophy in skeletal muscle is inevitable. However, we know it can be slowed down or delayed.” So, how do we delay muscle atrophy? The only answer is exercise, particularly strength-training exercises where you lift weights, such as dumbbells and barbells, or use your own

january 2015 • ourcommunityfocus.com

body weight, with pushups or lunges, to maintain or increase muscle mass. Muscles burn four calories more per pound compared to fat. Adding just a few pounds of muscle can immediately increase metabolism, which then prevents age related muscle wasting and helps increase or maintain your metabolism as you age. Usually, lifting weights three times a week for 30-45 minutes is sufficient for most people who want to maintain or increase their muscle, depending on how their workout is tailored to their needs. For more information on how Anna and her team of coaches at Transform FX Fitness can design your ideal fitness routine and nutrition plan to fit your lifestyle, call 925.289.8042 or e-mail anna@transformfxfitness.com or visit www.TransformFXFitness.com.

New Year’s Success

BY MATTHEW SIROTT, MD Dr. James Rembert, Dr. Christine Chung, and Dr. Sravana Chennupati recently joined Diablo Valley Oncology & Hematology Medical Group, expanding our Radiation Oncology Program to include Alta Bates Summit Medical Center/Herrick Campus in Berkeley, in addition to our current Radiation Oncology Division at the California Cancer and Research Institute in Pleasant Hill. Drs. Rembert, Chung, and Chennupati are outstanding, experienced, and compassionate radiation oncologists who provide high quality, cutting-edge care to patients at both the Pleasant Hill and Berkeley locations. Diablo Valley Oncology,” stated Dr. Rembert, managing partner of the radiation oncology group. “This association allows us to practice in a new geographic area at a comprehensive, communitybased cancer center as well as continue serving our well established, hospitalbased practice. Expanding to a group of four radiation oncologists allows each of us to focus more on our sub-specialty areas of interest, which translates into even better care for our patients at each site,” continued Dr. Rembert. Dr. Matthew Sirott is a medical oncologist and the president and CEO of Diablo Valley Oncology and Hematology Medical Group. The Pleasant Hill based medical group provides comprehensive, coordinated and targeted cancer care in the San Francisco East Bay. Its seventeen physicians bring together medical oncology; hematology; urology; chemotherapy; radiation therapy; diagnostic imaging; laboratory services; clinical trials and supportive care services. BY TONYA AMOS New Year’s resolutions are upon us. We have great hopes and excitement for making big changes in our lives. Unfortunately, dreams can be difficult to manifest if we set fast and furious goals without adjusting our daily lives to actually achieve these goals. Instead, try being “A Tiny Bit Better Each Week.” By moving slowly and steady (think tortoise, not hare), you will have time to actually integrate new behaviors into your busy, responsibility-filled lifestyle. By the end of the year, all the tiny bits will add up to equal a huge shift. Do some simple math to divide your goals into pieces. Is your goal to lose twenty pounds? A half-pound weight loss a week will put you over the top by the end of the year. Need to eat more vegetables? Adding an extra bite of vegetables to your plate each week brings fifty-two more weekly bites of vegetables into your diet by December 31. Need to get more exercise? Adding a minute of extra movement a day gets you seven more minutes your first week. Two minutes a day of activity during your second week lands you fourteen minutes, while three minutes a day the third

week brings in twenty-one minutes of healthy activity. Keep up this progression and by the end of the year you’ll have added six hours a week of exercise. Moving toward new goals slowly and thoughtfully gives you time to integrate these small changes into your life. By gradually adding them in, these shifts will be sustainable for the long term. By the end of the year, a mindful approach will help you achieve huge and lasting shifts from where you are at this moment. Here’s to 2015 being the year to achieve your health and fitness dreams! For more than 10 years during the holiday season, members of the Pleasant Hill Garden Study Club have been donating houseplants to homebound hospice patients. This year, 30 plants each were given to Hospice of the East Bay and Sutter Care at Home for delivery to their patients. Gail Sutherland (left) and Carol Nelsen (right) collected the plants at the club’s Dec. 2 meeting and took them to the hospice organizations.
