The Digital Divide

How we can help

The gap between people with effective access to digital and information technologies, in particular the Internet, and those with very limited or no access at all, is often referred to as the Digital Divide.

Our Technology Skills Centres are working to ensure that those not online and those for whom connectivity presents affordability and competency challenges, have the access they need to develop skills to flourish in the digital age.

Although the Digital Divide is closing, in Australia there are still deep gaps with a large number of vulnerable individuals without basic Internet access or skills.

Technology Skills Centre

Our commitment to helping regional Australians live better lives through improved digital literacy

Is the Skills Centre for me?

What is digital literacy? Digital literacy refers to the skills and competencies needed to use digital technologies to achieve personal goals, enhance employability skills and support education and training. It incorporates the ability to search and navigate, create, communicate and collaborate, think critically, analyse information, and address safety and wellbeing using a variety of digital technologies.

Why do I need to improve my digital literacy? Like access to water or electricity, access to information and communication technologies is essential to living, working and participating in today’s society. In Australia there are still a large number of vulnerable individuals without basic Internet access or skills who are unable to take advantage of the educational, health, social and financial benefits of being connected. Learning for digital literacy is a lifelong pursuit. The skills that make us digitally literate now may look very different to the skills we will need to be digitally literate in the future. ◌ To find out more about digital inclusion in Australia visit: https://digitalinclusionindex.org.au/about/about-digital-inclusion/.
