News from Rob Join us as we celebrate the cooperative credit union spirit

Robert Bava, President and CEO of Community Choice Credit Union

O

n October 16, 2014, credit unions around the world will celebrate International Credit Union Day®. That’s 200+ million people…from 56,000 credit unions…in 101 countries, joining together to celebrate their cooperative spirit. Globally, this cooperative spirit has led to life-changing opportunities in the form of small business start-ups, home ownership and education. In some countries, members encounter their first taste of democratic decision-making through their member-owned credit unions. This year, credit unions have been present during the most tumultuous moments around the world. Throughout the crisis in Ukraine, credit union volunteers were among the protesters in Kiev and are now attempting to maintain financial stability for their members. With the help of the World Council of Credit Unions, which is supported by credit unions in the U.S., Ukrainian credit unions are working on ways to ensure loans can be made to those who need them, and uphold the confidence of their members.

On the other side of the globe, credit unions in the Philippines are dealing with the devastation left after the recent typhoon. With the help of credit union organizations around the world, they are now rebuilding and renovating affected branches to better fit members’ needs. After such destruction, these Filipino credit unions are helping people get back on their feet. And credit unions worldwide are providing the basis for development while serving local communities, with an unwavering belief in the “people helping people” philosophy upon which we were built. Locally, as a member of Community Choice Credit Union, you and your financial stability are our top priorities. Globally, you’re part of a much bigger movement—the credit union movement— working toward global good each and every day. That’s definitely something to celebrate! We invite you to join us on Thursday, October 16 to celebrate International Credit Union Day! Your nearest member center will feature seasonal refreshments to honor this occasion. Community Choice Credit For the past six years, more than 200 Community Choice Credit Union team members as well as their families and friends, have ventured into the community to volunteer with blood drives, food pantries and other charitable efforts as part of an annual campaign to give their time and talents to community causes. Fittingly called Give Big Weekend, this year’s event wrapped up with more than 1,100 volunteer hours donated to help build up the community. Implemented in 2009, Community Choice Credit Union’s Give Big Weekend encourages people to give what they can to causes that need assistance. Volunteer events kicked off on Thursday, August 21 and lasted through Sunday, August 24. Although Give Big Weekend happens one weekend a year, Community Choice Credit Union aims to inspire people and businesses to continue extending helping hands all year long. “Our Give Big Weekend is always an exciting time for members and team members to roll up our sleeves and hit the streets to help our neighbors,” said Abbey Bierlein, Foundation Coordinator at Community Choice Credit Union. “The weekend of events really captures the essence of who we are as an organization. We’re living our mission to give back to the community.”

Give Big Weekend volunteers participated in activities supporting the following organizations:

• American Red Cross Blood Drives • Capuchin Soup Kitchen • Earthworks Urban Farm • Little Grace Village • Forgotten Harvest • Hemophilia Foundation of Michigan • Northville Food Truck Rally

(to support Gift of Life Michigan)
