WHO WILL MAKE THE TOUGH DECISIONS?

W

hen elderly hospital patients are too impaired to make medical decisions on their own, who will make the choices for them? Research indicates that family members take on this responsibility in nearly half of the cases, and that daughters are the ones most directly involved (60% of the time). However, hospitals are set up to treat family members as “visitors” and to rely on patients to make their own health care decisions. This disparity points out the importance of appointing a “health care representative” to assume the power to make important medical decisions for incapacitated elderly patients. An advance care directive (“living will”) also serves as a blueprint that doctors can follow when patients cannot make treatment decisions. At NOTRE DAME LONG TERM CARE CENTER, we will review all critical information regarding our seniors’ care to assure that their care is always performed in their best interest. To learn more about us and what we offer our seniors, contact us today at (508) 852-3011, and visit our conveniently located senior community at 559 Plantation Street. We are here for you. P.S. Adult children should be made aware of what their parents’ health care expectations are so that they have some insight into how to make decisions on matters in the event that their parents become too ill to speak for themselves.

Springtime: Renewal and Promise

P

eople who live in other parts of the country probably can’t understand the thrill of spring for New Englanders. Don’t all four seasons have special charms? Well, yes, they do, but... It’s amazing how, every single time spring arrives, there’s electricity in the air among us as leaves on the trees open, flowers burst into bloom and the birds and the bees go about their business (in ways both literal and figurative!). Spring is the time of renewal and the promise of new and good things to come. Spring is when we plant our gardens and clean our homes most completely. May and June are exciting times for celebrating milestones together at graduations, weddings and anniversaries and for playing spring sports outdoors.

daily tasks more easily and participating more fully in all aspects of life. For those already making good food choices and getting plenty of exercise and rest to be their personal best, our congratulations. The rest of us need to work at better health — a gift that keeps on giving. Consider this: if even Bill Gates puts his billions into providing access to healthcare for others, it must be an important thing.

How can we keep the joy of spring and the good times rolling?
