Neighbors helping neighbors

REGION - The past year has been a difficult one for so many of our friends and neighbors, including area children. One bright spot amidst all these dark times is the amazing generosity of so many individuals and groups who have stepped up to offer support to those in need, with financial support, donations, and gifts.

That includes the Shrewsbury Patrol Officers Union, NEPBA Local 191, who will once again be hosting their annual Toy Drive on Saturday, Dec. 12, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Shrewsbury Police Department, 106 Maple Ave. Those toys will then be distributed through Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services.

The union is also collecting donations of gift cards, paper products, laundry care supplies, and personal hygiene items, which will be distributed through St. Anne’s Human Services.

Thank you to the community

Letters To the Editor, We, at Craftworks, your loto the Editor cal Brick and Mortar craft fair and local yarn shop would like to thank the community for your overwhelming support over Thanksgiving weekend. To see so many of you come out to support us was amazing and just warmed our hearts to no end, even brought some to tears! This has given us the energy to continue the battle. Many small businesses, us included need a strong holiday season if we are going to be here next year, due to the financial hit we have taken from the pandemic.

Black Friday has traditionally been a day that big box stores and on-line businesses dump a whole lot of money into advertising and slash prices beyond words to entice you to spend your hardearned dollar with them. Last year, major retailers spent just over a quarter of a billion dollars on Black Friday ads alone. By contrast, the average small business spends a mere $400 per month on marketing, according to a Chamber of Commerce survey.

What the big boxes/ internet businesses do not do is help the community they service. Small business is what carries the area. We know people by name, your neighbors and your friends, and are there for you when you ask for donations and support for your school, church and civic groups.

In-person store limits have slowed down the hustle-andbustle of the shopping day, but some shoppers told us they are

Lively Lambrusco

Lambrusco is a red wine grape grown in the Emilia-Romagna area in northern Italy. Lambrusco is also the name of the food-friendly, red wines made from these grapes. Sometimes after a long day at work, having a pizza delivered seems like an easier option than cooking dinner. A chilled bottle of Lambrusco is an excellent choice to pair with pizza toppings such as tomato, cheese, pepperoni, and spicy sausage. The most highly-rated Lambrusco wines are dry and slightly sparkling. These wines have strawberry notes and sufficient acidity to refresh the palate when eating oily or spicy food. Light-bodied Lambrusco is low in alcohol and tannin, so it is delicious when sipped by itself while waiting for the pizza to arrive. Lambrusco is one of the best wines to pour for a holiday toast or to sip alongside a six-course meal. You can find a Lambrusco for $10, but it’s not necessarily one you’d want to drink. Lambrusco wines in the $10 to $20 range are only a few dollars more expensive and offer an enormous leap in quality. JULIO’S LIQUORS features 20,000 sq. ft. of spectacular shopping in downtown Westborough, MA. For more information, please call 508-366-1942. We are located at 140 Turnpike Rd., Rt. 9 East.

HINT: The level of dryness/sweetness of Lambrusco wine is indicated on the bottle label. Dry wines are labeled secco, slightly sweet are labeled amabile, and very sweet are labeled dolce.
