USHERING IN NEW TREATMENT?
U
sher syndrome is an inherited disease that causes hearing loss and an eye disorder known as “retinitis pigmentosa” (RP). As a result of progressive damage of their retinas, RP patients suffer from night blindness and peripheral vision loss that renders them unable to lead normal lives. As their fields of vision narrow, patients experience “tunnel vision” that leaves them able to see only straight ahead. While there is currently no treatment for Usher syndrome or retinitis pigmentosa, there is an interesting new treatment on the horizon that offers real hope. It involves injecting genetically engineered DNA into the eyes of RP sufferers that is designed to replace the non-functional gene responsible for RP. RP sufferers may soon see a cure. P.S. In advanced cases, retinitis pigmentosa can lead to loss of central vision.

The Buzz… everyone’s talking about it! In November our team at Wegmans embarked on a journey to bring coffee back to basics. Our mission was to offer our customers an authentic, artisan espresso drink just like those offered in Italian cafes. Wegmans coffee team has traveled the world to source the perfect organic beans we use at our Buzz coffee shop. Our employees here at the Northborough store have completed a series of barista certification courses focusing on our unique products, processes, techniques and education to deliver a simple, yet delicious espresso beverage. You’ll quickly notice a difference in our espresso beverages at first sip; our espresso pods are packed with more beans and a coarser grind organic blend allows for the high velocity of water to penetrate quickly. Only the
sweet flavors of the espresso are extracted leaving out the bitterness many associate with espresso. Our milk texturing process completes the perfect drink as our baristas steam whole milk within a very narrow range of temperatures. This is optimal for the natural fats and proteins in the milk to break resulting in a natural sweetness that complements the crèma on the foam cap. Our Ultimate Lattes and Classic Cappuccinos are ready to drink right when you receive them, no need to wait for the drink to cool down. Our passionate baristas are excited to educate our customers on great coffee.
