Katie is a home-grown local & most of her family still lives here. She graduated from Texas A&M Corpus Christi with a Communications degree. She lived in San Antonio for 9 years and worked heavily within organizing events during her Edward Jones Investments career while coaching club volleyball. She recently moved home to Marble Falls and began event planning and fundraising for the Marble Falls Education Foundation before moving into her current role for the Chamber. She has been voted onto the Education Foundation board, is the treasurer for the Marble Falls Youth Baseball Softball Association and handles PR for the Marble Falls Rodeo Association. Katie has a love for travel, being outdoors with family and friends, or catch her out on a boat or on her Harley.

Jarrod is originally from the Waco area and graduated from Texas A&M University. After more than ten years as a teacher in Katy, Jarrod moved home and began working at the Extraco Events Center as the VP of the Heart O’ Texas Fair for eight years, which has prepared him for his current role. Jarrod’s wife Heather works for Marble Falls ISD as the Executive Director of Secondary Education. Braedon, his oldest son, recently graduated from Texas A&M University and is pursuing a career Agricultural Sales and Bryson, his younger son, is currently attending Texas State University. Jarrod has a love for the outdoors, specifically hunting and fishing. When not spending time with family, you will likely find him on one of the Highland Lakes.

Veronica grew up in Marble Falls and is very knowledgeable about the area. She has worked for MFISD, the City of Marble Falls, and has continued to serve our community at the Chamber. She has seen little ole Marble Falls grow and is excited for what’s to come. She graduated from Texas Tech University and has also been a licensed cosmetologist since 2002. Veronica has three children. Jessica, her oldest, is a Concordia University Texas graduate with a degree in Business Administration in Marketing. Aleena, age 7 is a 2nd grader at Colt Elementary in Marble Falls. Her youngest Emmett, is 1 year old. Veronica’s husband, JR, is a master electrician serving the Texas Hill Country and surrounding areas. They enjoy traveling and spending time with family and friends.

EARLY LIFE

Marble Falls was named for the waterfalls now located at the bottom of Lake Marble Falls. As early as 1817 the falls were used as a landmark by travelers and were referred to as the "great falls" or the "marble falls" of the Colorado River. Though they are now underwater, they are revealed every few years when the lake is lowered by the LCRA for repairs.

Beginning in the early days of the Texas Republic, the area was colonized by Germans farmers and ranchers. In addition, a small colony was established by early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of LatterDay Saints (Mormons) in the early 1850s. Both of these groups aided greatly in the area development and still have an important impact and presence here today.

OFFICIAL FOUNDING

Charles S. Todd made an effort to establish a town at the falls in 1854. Several lots were sold, but few homes were built, so "Todd's Village" faded before it ever really started. Eventually the land was sold to pay taxes. Later in 1854, Adam R. “Stovepipe” Johnson saw the falls and officially named the area "Marble Falls." He wanted to build a town on the site, but his project

remained a dream until the 1880s. There was some difficulty in establishing a clear title to the land, but by 1886 Johnson succeeded in buying one-half and controlling the rest of the original Baker grant, which included the falls area.

RAPID GROWTH

In June 1887, Johnson and nine other investors chartered the Texas Mining & Improvement Company to handle the business of the new town. In July of that year, lots in the new town were advertised for sale.

Within just three years, Marble Falls had Methodist and Baptist churches, a cotton gin, a gristmill, a tannery, a shoe factory, three general stores, a hotel, a weekly newspaper, and 400+ residents.

In 1891, the Marble Falls Alliance University was chartered, but was in operation only a few years. Its facilities were later purchased by the public school system when an independent school district was formed.

A mayor-alderman form of government was instituted, and in 1907 the first city officials were elected.

FEMALE TRAILBLAZER

On February 2, 1917, Ophelia “Birdie” Harwood became mayor of Marble Falls - three years before women had the right to vote. She was the first female mayor in Texas and the first in the United States to be seated by an all-male electorate.

ROCK SOLID INDUSTRY

It was Granite Mountain, the 866 ft. stone monolith looming on the western edge of the town, secured Marble Falls’ place in Texas history. It was here that granite for the Galveston Seawall was quarried as well as the famed “Texas Red Sunset” granite used to construct the Texas State Capitol Building.

The stone was donated to the citizens of Texas from the progressive area owners in exchange for a rail connection from Austin to the mountain. Blacks, Hispanics, Scots and early U.S. immigrants worked to develop granite as a big commercial endeavor.

The Austin & Northwestern Railroad built a passenger extension from Granite Mountain to

Marble Falls in 1889, which further opened the area to commerce. A post office was also established that year.

Granite Mountain is actively quarried today and a variety of granite products are shipped all over the world.

You will find over 30 Texas Historic Markers in the area. Marker sites include: several for activities or construction before 1900, locations of historically significant events as well as several churches, homes and business buildings.

The Hill Country is known for its dozens of fine vineyards, and they certainly live up to the hype. But don't sleep on our craft brew scene. Great breweries are right here in town.

CIVIC LEADERSHIP

The City of Marble Falls is a home rule city with a council-manager form of government. The city council is composed of a mayor and six members elected at large under a place system. Each council member occupies a place on the council and is elected by plurality from all candidates running for that place by the qualified voters of the city.

Each member serves a staggered 2 year term, thus 3 of the members are voted on 1 year, with the remaining members, including the mayor, elected the following year. An individual may serve a maximum number of three terms as council member and three terms as mayor. An individual may not serve more than four consecutive terms as both mayor and as a council member. Regular city council elections are held on the 2nd Saturday in May.

The city council operates under the home rule city charter adopted by the citizens of Marble Falls. The council is responsible for: approving or rejecting zoning changes; considering city ordinances and resolutions, establishing city policies, establishing the annual budget to provide services to the public, a setting the city tax rate and water and wastewater rates.

Wow—what a year. In spite of crazy price fluctuations in the local real estate market (the median sales price of a home in Marble Falls reached $678,800 in July), rising inflation across the board, extended drought in the region, political chicanery at the national level, and global unrest, Marble Falls had a pretty fabulous year from an economic development standpoint. Here is a recap of projects, activities, and some organizational highlights.

JANUARY: The Marble Falls EDC sold a 6-acre parcel in

FEBRUARY: The MFEDC was recognized by the Texas Economic Development Council (TEDC) for Economic Excellence in 2021 for “a commitment to professional economic development by appointed officials and exemplary professional standards demonstrated by the economic development staff” for the tenth consecutive year. The MFEDC was one of 57 organizations statewide to receive this recognition in 2021, but one of only five in the state to receive the award ten years in a row. Putters & Gutters II, a long-awaited and muchneeded family entertainment center, also opened its doors in February.

MARCH: Stantec completed design development on Phase 1b of the Parks Master Plan. Amenities will include a boardwalk, water features, and a reinspired power house.

THE OPHELIA HOTEL & CONFERENCE CENTER

JULY: Another prominent Downtown property, 705 First Street, sold to new owners.

AUGUST: The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration announced that our workforce development partners, Workforce Network, Inc. and Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area, were awarded a $4.6 million Good Jobs Challenge grant.

APRIL: The revised Planned Development District (PDD) for the Downtown hotel and conference center project was approved, and the EDC board authorized a design and engineering contract for a pedestrian bridge over Backbone Creek to connect Johnson Park to Lakeside Park. Texas Tech University – Highland Lakes celebrated its 20th anniversary in Marble Falls.

MAY: The Marble Falls Hotel Group and the MFEDC announced the name of our landmark Downtown project: the Ophelia Hotel & Conference Center.

JUNE: The MFEDC was awarded the 2022 Workforce Excellence Award for Communities Under 15,000 in Population at the TEDC Mid-Year Conference in Corpus Christi. The property located at 99 Main Street, a key Downtown development parcel, changed ownership. Hill Country Memorial’s new facility in Gateway Park opened.

They were 1 of 32 winners out of 509 applicants nationwide. Funds in the Highland Lakes area will be used to support HVAC training, IT certification programs, finance/banking training, and more. Also in August, Legacy Crossing, a 546-acre project at the southeast corner of US Highway 281 and State Highway 71, announced its development plans.

SEPTEMBER: The EDC board approved a $78,000 community leverage grant for Downtown projects, including railing upgrades, support for Christmas events, and engineering for electrical upgrades in the park and Downtown area. Site development on the Panther Hollow commercial tracts also began.

OCTOBER: I had the honor of being elected to the Texas Economic Development Council’s board of directors at the TEDC Annual Conference in San Antonio.

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER: Site clearing for both the Ophelia Hotel & Conference Center project and Phase 1b of the Parks Master Plan were completed in the last two months of 2022. Formal groundbreaking for both projects should occur in the first quarter of 2023.

2022 marked the first time in at least 20 years that every single monthly sales tax allocation report set a new record for that month. Growth was steady, strong, and balanced throughout the year, and total receipts were up 15.69% over 2021. Every one of our top 6 industries (representing 99% of all taxpayers) was up for the year—ranging from 7.7% to 39.6%. Retail, our largest sector, was up 12.7%; building materials, the largest subsector, was up 18.4%. Nonstore retailers and online shopping accounted for less than 3% of total sales, so brick-and-mortar is still alive and well in Marble Falls. This is a good indication of a strong regional economy.

Looking forward to 2023, I expect that widespread residential and retail development in town and in the greater Highland Lakes region, along with the continued impacts of remote work, will help Marble Falls overcome the economic headwinds that will dampen activity in many other parts of the country. I don’t think that we will see the 25-35% gains that we saw in 2021, but I believe that mid-to-high-single-digit growth would be a good, conservative expectation.

Whether you’re looking for a multi-million dollar lakefront home, a ranchette, a golf course home in a pecan orchard, or an antique Victorian in the original township, there’s no place like Marble Falls when it comes to putting down roots.

The Texas Hill Country has become ground zero of a recent statewide explosion in the demand for land and houses, according to Texas A&M University’s Texas Real Estate Research Center.

AREA HOUSING INSIGHTS

• Homebuying activity increased significantly in recent years as an indication of growing demand.

• New housing development has exceeded the rate of growth for Marble Falls year-round population.

• Single-family detached homes represent the most common housing type in the community; however, the city has a relatively high share of residents in midsize multifamily properties.

• Home prices have skyrocketed.

• Despite the aging population and declining number of children, the population of Marble Falls still skews much younger than the surrounding region.

• While population projections show slowing growth, recent increases in migration to Burnet County and City of Marble Falls is likely to drive growth.

In early 2020, plans for Gregg Ranch were heralded as the first large-scale development in Marble Falls in decades. Now the investment in the small city west of Austin is being felt on the ground: homes are selling fast in the master-planned community, even as officials plan for the next phase of development. PulteGroup, the community’s first builder, debuted new floor plans and designs specific to the 240-acre master-planned community at the grand opening in April 2021.

Gregg Ranch is expected to include about 1,000 homes at full build-out. According to the most recent plans, 700 of these homes will be single-family, while 250 will be multifamily. Developers are also planning for an undisclosed commercial element.

Homeowners will enjoy access to planned amenities anticipated to include a resident-only park, due for completion in Phase 1. Called Mrs. Gregg’s Park, it is planned to include a kid’s play area, ramada, horseshoe pit, seating and a Little Lending Library in honor of Mrs. Gregg, a longtime teacher in Marble Falls. A second sports and play area park, also reserved for residents only, will be built in Phase 2 and is anticipated to include a half-soccer field perfect for practice with the kids, tee-ball, frisbee, kite flying, community concerts

or family picnics. Bocce ball is also planned.

At completion of Phase 2, homeowners will enjoy access to planned amenities anticipated to include a private outdoor community amenity center with pool, restrooms and ramada. Residents will also take advantage of the outstanding natural terrain and landscaping along 5.5 miles of public community walking, jogging and biking trails.

Currently, homes range in size from 1,600 square feet to more than 3,600 square feet. Prices start in the mid-$300,000 range.

LEGACY CROSSING

In August 2022, the Marble Falls City Council approved a development agreement with 71/281 Investments and MMK Ventures LLC, the Austin-based residential developer on the $750 million Legacy Crossing mixed-use project. The project is projected to bring more than 1,000 homes, more than 200 multi-family units and hundreds of thousands of square feet of retail and commercial space to 546 acres at the southeast corner of U.S. Highway 281 and State Highway 71.

Site plans include 115 acres of commercial space that is expected to total 800,000 square feet of retail and commercial space; the 264-unit apartment "Flatz 281" apartment complex being developed on 13 acres by Z Modular, a subsidiary of Zekelman Industries Inc.; and 1,343 single-family homes on the remaining acreage.

While they're still in the process of soliciting tenants and homebuilders, developer Darrell Sargent announced that their first commercial tenant – San Antonio-based Big's Convenience Store. Once completed, the 6,100 square-foot convenience store will also include a restaurant component, along with up to 10 gas pumps and four electric vehicle charging stations.

They're aiming to start the first phases of residential and commercial development shortly after. Flatz 281 will feature garden-style apartment buildings that will be split into six three-story walk-up buildings. The property will also include a clubhouse with a pool and

full amenities, including a bocce ball court, two dog parks, golf simulator, volleyball courts and a patio area with grills and fire pits.

The name for the full project, Legacy Crossing, pays homage to the fact that the land has only been in the hands of a couple of owners over the last few hundred years – while also paying tribute to those who were involved in the investment over the last two decades.

THUNDER ROCK

Sitting on approximately 1,100 acres, Thunder Rock will be home to 1,966 single-family home sites, 924 multifamily units and 150 active adult units. Thoughtfully designed with you in mind, the singlefamily residential portion will be comprised of four lot types including 171 40-foot wide lots, 1,605 50-foot wide lots, 190 60-foot wide lots and 82 two to five-acre ranchette lots.

Thunder Rock will also feature a robust variety of amenities including a 26-acre city sports complex, 10-acre recreational center, 204,000 square feet of commercial development, and for the outdoor enthusiast, linear parks with native habitat and nature trails along Flatrock Creek will be present.

The Central Texas College site in Marble Falls is located in the Frank Fickett Center, 806 Steve Hawkins Parkway. Freshman and sophomore classes are smaller to encourage student participation and to help students become more comfortable with the learning environment. The Falls on the Colorado Museum brings the story of Marble Falls to life through artifacts dating from the prehistoric era up to the present. The Museum boasts an extensive collection of photographs portraying life in the early 1900s. Our kitchen without electricity exhibit takes visitors back to a simpler time. Other displays deal with Marble Falls schools, farm and ranch life, early Mormon settlement, geology, lakes, rivers, and dams. The museum's collection of Native American artifacts and our beloved Rockie—a 700-year-old bison—are of particular interest to visitors.

The Parks and Recreation Department maintains approximately 150 acres of park land, sports parks, trails, greenbelts and facilities in Marble Falls. There are two parks in Marble Falls that have water access and are located close to the center of town – Lakeside Park & Johnson Park.

Johnson Park offers safe and exciting playgrounds under large oak & pecan trees, or an individual or family picnic can be enjoyed under a shaded pavilion.

Westside Park is connected to Johnson Park with a half mile walking path along Backbone Creek and has an 18-hole disc golf course along with other amenities including fenced, off-leash area for furry friends.

Falls Creek Park has several picnic tables, barbeque pits, a canoe-launch area and restroom facilities. It is also the location of the Falls Creek Park Skatepark.

For those interested in chasing the little white ball around some wonderful courses, five different ones can be encountered in the area. There are four 18-hole courses – Hidden Falls Marble Falls, Delaware Springs Burnet, The Legends Kingsland, The Lighthouse Kingsland plus one 9-hole course – Blue Lake Golf Club - with two sets of tees.

Lakeside Park on Lake Marble Falls offers swimming access to the lake as well as several splash pools perfect for young children. Come wriggle your toes in the sandy beach, jump into Lake Marble Falls, or just take a dip in one of the wading pools. The park includes a roped-off swimming area so you can enjoy the lake without worrying about boats and other watercraft. You can also take a dip in the nearby pool which features a diving board, a water slide and a wading pool with a mushroom water feature for the little ones. The pool operates during the summer from May to late August.

STATE/REGIONAL PARKS

Iconic rock formations, shimmering lakes and spectacular swimming holes. You’ll find it all within

an easy drive of Marble Falls, which is surrounded by many of Texas’ best state parks. In fact, there are five parks located less than 60 miles from town and the Hill Country scenery makes for a beautiful drive.

COLORADO BEND STATE PARK

A hidden jewel of the Texas park system, Colorado Bend is situated in the Hill Country along the Colorado River and is home to Gorman Falls, a 65 foot waterfall paradise. Fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking and other great opportunities abound. Colorado Bend is also home to Spicewood Springs - one of the best swimming holes in the Hill Country. A short, flat

trail will lead you to the first of multiple spring-fed swimming holes. Continue up the Spicewood Springs trail for more pools and waterfalls.

ENCHANTED ROCK STATE NATURAL AREA

Enchanted Rock is a magical Texas state park in Hill Country known for its giant pink granite dome. It is the largest isolated pink granite dome in the United States.

Hiking to the top of Enchanted Rock is one of the most popular things to do in the park. The rock covers 640 acres and is 1,825 feet above sea level at its tallest!

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is also one of the most visited state parks in Texas, seeing 250,000 visitors a year. As a result, reservations are required for entry and often fill up quickly. Day passes go on sale a month in advance with specific time of entry. Mark your calendar 30 days in advance to book your spot!

In addition to day access for hiking in Enchanted Rock, the park also offers camping, rock climbing and stargazing, it is an International Dark Sky Park!

INKS LAKE STATE PARK

Inks Lake State Park is great for a day trip or a weekend getaway. Because the lake’s level usually stays constant, you can play here year-round.

On land, you can camp, backpack, geocache, play volleyball, picnic, and observe nature. Here you'll find 9 miles of hiking trails through shady forests and across

Located less than 20 minutes from Marble Falls, Longhorn Caverns is a unique Hill Country destination full of natural beauty and Texas-sized tales. Developed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC),

the park’s star attraction is Longhorn Cavern, an underground wonder created by an ancient river's dissolving and cutting action. Pedernales Falls State Park has arguably some of the most beautiful and unique scenery in the Texas Hill Country. is a four day community event in Johnson Park that features plenty of familyfriendly fun. Carnival rides and games, free concerts, and plenty of great food can be found during Mayfest. In addition, arts and crafts vendors set up shop in downtown Marble Falls for Main Street Market Day on the last day of the event.

PAINT THE TOWN

For one week in late March and early April,

watch 40+ plein air artists painting at various area locations, purchase some pieces for your own collection, and enjoy everything else this event has to offer. You’ll see dozens of expert artists painting lakeside and other locations like Historic Main Street.

SCULPTURE ON MAIN

Sculpture On Main, first mounted in 2007, is a unique showing of public art within the Historic Downtown Marble Falls

area. The current sculpture display, juried in 2016, represents the best of artists from around the region. In addition to our rotating sculpture exhibit, mosaic pieces created and donated by Father Jairo Lopez are displayed on Main Street and within the Marble Falls Visitor Center.

WALKWAY OF LIGHTS

of Lights is one of the biggest holiday events in the Highland Lakes every year. Two million lights on more than 130 sculptures illuminate Lakeside Park beginning each year in November. Walkway of Lights in Marble Falls runs 6-10 p.m. each day through the season — weather permitting.
