HISTORY

San Angelo was established across the river from historic Fort Concho, an outpost established in 1867 that served as headquarters for the 4th and 10th Cavalry and 16th Infantry. The fort was home to cavalry, infantry, and the famous Black Cavalry, also known as Buffalo Soldiers by Indigenous Americans. The settlement was originally named “Santa Angela” in honor of Carolina Angela de la Garza DeWitt, the deceased wife of the city’s founder Bart J. DeWitt, a merchant and businessman. The name was later changed to San Angelo.

After being designated as the Tom Green County seat, the town grew quickly in the 1880s, aided by being on the route of newly constructed railroads. It became a central transportation hub for the region. The Santa Fe Railroad arrived in 1888 and the Kansas City, Mexico, and Orient Railway in 1909.

The discovery of oil and gas, the influx of light manufacturing, the development of a communications center, the establishment and growth of Angelo State University, and the growth of the medical community provided diversification to a growing community. Today, this city of 100,000 is the trade and services hub of a 13-county area, supported by agriculture, manufacturing, education, business and health services, military, tourism, and retirement.

Block One

Rooted in history including bordellos and booze in the early 1900s, Block One has made a name for

itself. Located across the river from Fort Concho, Block One of San Angelo’s historic Concho Avenue was home to the first merchants in the Concho Valley and the stone buildings they built that still stand tall today. Block One remains a hub for shopping, retail and restaurants to this day. Stop by and shop local at some of the stores or grab a bite to eat while appreciating the unique architectures of Block One.

The Cactus Hotel

The historic 15 story Cactus Hotel remains the tallest building in San Angelo and can be seen for miles on the eastern side of town. The Cactus Hotel was opened by Conrad Hilton in May of 1929, right before the Great Depression, which was not an

ideal time to open a grand hotel. By the mid-1930s Hilton was out of the hotel business in San Angelo. New owners replaced the name “Hilton” on the hotel’s rooftop electric sign with “Hotel Cactus,” The Crystal Ballroom continues to host many of San Angelo’s most important events.

Concho Pearl Statue

From the waters of the North Concho River she rises, arm outstretched, hair flowing back, and neck angled toward the sky as she admires the rare treasure in her hand. Since June 11, 1994, the “Pearl of the Conchos” mermaid has captured the attention of passersby near Celebration Bridge as she holds her open oyster with encased jewel. In her hand is the sculpted Concho Pearl, which can only be found in the fresh waters around San Angelo. Unlike traditional round white pearls, Concho pearls are each different, irregular shapes and come in varying shades of pink and lavender. Concho pearls can be found at several local jewelers in San Angelo and are a beautifully rare treat to behold.

Farmer’s Market

The Concho Valley Farmers Market is a true farmers market, according to Margie Jackson, president of the Concho Valley Farmers Market. "That's what makes us the best farmers market in Texas," she said. "In San Angelo we are all about the produce - not arts and crafts."

The vendors, who come from a 75-mile radius around San Angelo, sell locally grown seasonal fruits, vegetables and plants from 7am until sell out (typically by noon) each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday thereafter until the first fall freeze. There are about 38 booths, but at the peak of summer as many as 60 sellers crowd into the area. Vendors bring a wide variety of items for people to purchase.

“Sometimes we'll get 50 people all looking for tomatoes. Sometimes it's corn or melons they're asking for," Margie said. "Usually we have so much produce we have to pick every other day, so people can find us there every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday."

Customers can often find $1 bundles for bowls and produce. In the fall they have larger $2-$6 bags so that people can "put it up, buy it for canning or freezing or fill their baskets," Margie said. "Around the last part of November, when we know there's a freeze coming, we go out and pick everything clean the bushes off, then sell our produce one last time."

Fort Concho

Experience living histor y at the oldest site in San Angelo - historic Fort Concho! Established in 1867, along the banks of the Concho River, Fort Concho was built to protect frontier settlements, patrol and map the vast West Texas region and quell hostile threats in the area and served as regimental headquarters for some of the most famous frontier units. Today, Fort Concho National Historic Landmark encompasses most of the former army post and includes 24 original and restored fort structures. Fort Concho is owned and operated by the City of San Angelo.

San Angelo NAACP Buffalo Soldier Memorial

Located across from Fort Concho National Historic Landmark is a memorial site dedicated to the brave Buffalo Soldiers who once served at Fort Concho. This memorial stands as a powerful testament to the courageous spirit of the Buffalo Soldiers, who faced adversity and discrimination with unwavering dignity. Open and FREE to the public 24/7.

The International Waterlily Collection

Owned by Ken Landon, the International Waterlily Collection has been highlighting natural beauty to San Angelo for more than three decades. Displayed in six pools for the public’s enjoyment, the waterlilies are changed annually with flowering season from April through October. In September, during the height of the blooming, the collection is celebrated with the Lily Fest. As one of the world’s foremost waterlily collections, the garden contains hybrids and old favorites, as well as fun for all who visit the collection.

Lone Wolf Bridge

Fabricated in 1922, this 152-foot-long pedestrian truss bridge spans the Concho River and has a unique history that can be traced back to the 1880s. Originally built in 1888, the bridge is home to many tales of paranormal activity and unusual occurrences. Theories about the bridge’s haunting range from 1930s flood victims revisiting the bridge to the spirit of a Kiowa/Apache chief whose son was killed in a battle with Fort Concho calvary also haunting the bridge. In more recent times the Lone Wolf Bridge has become home to a seven-foot-tall red metal heart with a keyhole in its center adorned with engraved locks placed by local couples. The piece was donated by Art in Uncommon Places, a local nonprofit dedicated to art.

Mayer Museum

Get ready to experience history. The Angelo State University Mayer Museum enhances the educational experience of students while also engaging the community by interpreting and exhibiting historic, cultural and natural materials that relate to the diversity of the Concho Valley, Texas, and beyond. From giant dinosaurs to the chronicles of the Permian Basin, this brand new 32,000 square foot science and culture museum showcases the prestige of the region and immerses visitors of all ages in the history and majesty of the Concho Valley.”

Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue

Mark and Amy Meyers started the Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue as a backyard hobby over two decades ago and has turned into the largest rescue of its kind in the world. The Meyers still stay involved in the day-to-day operations of the Rescue but they also manage a large staff that ensure the well-being of the over 3,000 donkeys under their direct care. Under the Meyers’ direction, Peaceful Valley has grown to the largest rescue of its kind with facilities across the United States, but is headquartered right here in San Angelo, Texas. The Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue’s main rescue and rehabilitation facility is located on a 172-acre former dairy in San Angelo and is home to around 1,000 donkeys at any given time.

Sheep Statues

Once known as the "Wool and Mohair Capital of the World," San Angelo has been a top producer of wool since the 1930s. Prior to the drought of 2011 that resulted in a decline in Texas sheep, the Concho Valley produced over 1 million pounds of wool annually. In 2007, local nonprofit Downtown San Angelo, Inc. created the Sheep Spectacular. The Sheep Spectacular serves as an homage to the city’s rich heritage. Rambouillet sheep have become a symbol for San Angelo and now grace businesses across San Angelo in the form of a colorful and creative fiberglass herd, all painted by local artists. Each sheep is unique to the business it is in or around. Along with distinctive colors and patterns, the sheep are also known by their punny names such as Wild ‘n Wooly, Sheep Justice “Ewenice” and My Mail to “Ewe”/Ewe’ve Got Mail.

San Angelo Regional Manufacturer's Alliance (SARMA)

The San Angelo Chamber EDD supports specific industry sector recruitment marketing through its regional industrial manufacturer and energy sector advocacy organization – the San Angelo Regional Manufacturers Alliance (SARMA) program. The members of the SARMA provide invaluable industry intelligence to the San Angelo Chamber and COSADC staff by assisting with the mission of growing their enterprises by collaboration with suppliers and complimentary industrial companies. The links created by these constant interactions with our industrial community has provided positive results in the form of new jobs, company expansions, capital investment and the development of supply

chain transportation and facility infrastructure. The San Angelo Chamber EDD approach to economic development is based on the practice and philosophy of supporting local manufacturing and industrial services first, known within the economic development industry as “Economic Gardening.” This practice, through our SARMA program, connects the Chamber team with local industry leaders to create pathways to providing solutions to growth challenges. Industry retention and expansion is a primary goal. San Angelo’s incumbent and newly recruited industrial enterprises need consistent support with facility upgrades and expansion to meet market demands.

The Chamber directly supports and funds industry workforce training programs through our Cornerstone Fund Program. The combination of these efforts has led to the recruitment of new industrial enterprises, mainly with those operations seeking to join the Economic Clustering effect created by these efforts. Recent corporate enterprise recruits include, Rosenberger GmbH, Amazon Logistics, St. Juanita Skilled Nursing Facility, H&E Equipment, Equipment Share, Inc., and APEX Clean Energy. Recent Business Expansions include, Allen’s Transport US/Canada (LSPI Chemical), Texas Australia Rock, Principal Sloan LED, Talk-O-Texas Foods and SMC Global Chemicals.

SME PRIME Initiative

SME PRIME® Update: The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) Education Foundation manages the Partnership Response In Manufacturing Education (PRIME®) program. SME PRIME® builds cost-effective and tailored manufacturing/engineering programs in high schools across the country, providing equipment, curriculum, professional development, scholarships and STEM-focused extracurricular activities to students and teachers. PRIME® students receive hands-on training on modern equipment and learn about technology and processes through industryinformed curriculum that is tailored to meet the needs of local manufacturers. PRIME® programs are completely funded by engaged donors. The schools bear no cost. The entire process is done in partnership with donors and educators. The

PRIME® approach is collaboration with the school and the manufacturing partners to help the school build a highly tailored program designed with direct input from the companies.

In 2020, stakeholders (Ethicon, Principle LED, COSADC, and the Chamber of Commerce) came together, recognized the value in establishing a PRIME® high school designation in SAISD (Central and Lake View), championed the initiative and pledged a total of $320,000 in donor funds for the 3-year project. SAISD and WTTC will be the 2nd high school campus in Texas carrying the PRIME® designation.

In the first year (2021), SME conducted regional market research, regional workforce assessments, a donor workforce assessment, developed education Pathway Standards and aligned with

State standards, finally culminating with a Curriculum Plan. The curriculum pathways developed for SAISD are Industrial Maintenance and Mechatronics/Robotics (focusing on engineering design). In 2021, SME also procured the first piece of equipment, a SNAP-ON Precision Measurement Instrument Tool Kit. In conjunction with Tooling U-SME, SAISD has initiated a course of instruction that will permit students to be awarded certification in Precision Measurement Instrumentation (PMI). Tooling U-SME is the industry leading provider of training and workforce development solutions for thousands of companies, providing custom online curriculum aligned with industry certifications and is the provider of SME curriculum.

In 2022 and 2023, the 4-year curriculum has been completely delivered, and in fact it actually begins with SAISD 8th grade students. The new equipment delivered includes a state-of-the-art Stratasys F170 3-D Printer and 6 x TETRIX® MAX Dual-Control Robotic kits.

The SME PRIME® program provides a gateway for students to get into the skilled trades and support highly skilled positions at local area and global companies. 89% of graduating SME PRIME® students intend to pursue careers in manufacturing, and 60% of those students intend to pursue post-secondary education in a field directly related to manufacturing. Program measurable deliverables include:

• Equipment, Materials and Supplies

• Curriculum and Certifications

• Professional Development

• Scholarships

The overall success of the program is dependent upon the ongoing partnership between the school and the local employers/donors.

HIGHWAYS

San Angelo is ser ved by three U.S. Highways: 67, 87 and 277. The city is located about 1.5 hours

from either I-20 to the north or I-10 to the south. Current highway improvement plans will connect San Angelo with those interstates via four lane highways. DOT “Super-Two” highways are also on the regional infrastructure plans. As a member of the Ports-to-Plains Alliance, San Angelo is part of the present development of Interstate 27 north-south interstate corridor to connect Canada, U.S. and Mexico. The city is also the east-west Strategic Gulf Coast Highway, running from Louisiana to El Paso.

AIR

San Angelo Regional Airport - Mathis Field (Airport Code: SJT) is the only commercial airport serving the Concho Valley, with more than 150 aircraft based at Mathis Field. American Airlines (American Eagle) offers with up to five daily flights

BNSF Railway, the country’s second largest railroad, provides San Angelo with transcontinental freight service. San Angelo is also corporate headquarters for Texas Pacifico Transportation Ltd., the operator of a 390 mile short line railroad connecting to major U.S. railroads and to Mexico.

SAN ANGELO RAIL PORT

The 183-acre SPLRR San Angelo Rail Port creates a logistics and freight distribution hub serving the agricultural and commercial sectors in the Concho Valley by greatly enhancing efficiencies of large cargo movements and reducing freight costs per ton-mile for our local commodities producers and users. This development will directly impact freight costs reduction and supply chain control for high-volume industries. Rail freight reduces costs between 40% to 70% per ton-mile. These shipping and costs efficiencies translate to

increased profit for shippers through logistics cost reduction. The multicommodity rail port serving the San Angelo business community will be a significant enhancement to the regional commodity producers, commodity consumers, energy industries, manufacturing operations and other industrial sectors. The San Angelo Rail Port provides a regional community logistics and distribution center for consumer goods such as shipping containers, bulk agricultural products, chemicals, steel, aggregates and construction materials.

INTERNATIONAL & NATIONAL FREIGHT CONNECTIONS

The Chamber has worked with Texas Pacifico Railroad (TXPF) throughout 2021 to encourage the opening of the International Rail Bridge at Presidio, Texas on the Mexico US border. The completed rail bridge is expected to open for service within the next year. The TXPF railroad is a Class 3, 391-mile line that runs from Coleman, Texas to Presidio, Texas. The route creates a direct link between the Ferromex rail freight network and the BNSF rail network throughout the United States.

Farm & Agriculture

Agriculture, whether it is raising cotton, wheat or grain sorghum, cattle, sheep or goats, developed as an economic mainstay for the Concho Valley with the founding of San Angelo in 1867. Since then, the agriculture industry has changed with the addition of processing, storage and distribution facilities, vertical supply channels, implement dealers and specialized crop and livestock production, marketing and financing consultants and other service providers. All these entities have changed and evolved with the dramatic and rapid adoption of new technologies, changing consumer preferences and challenging economic conditions.

Though the Concho Valley is considered the sheep and goat capital of the U.S., cow-calf and

stocker operations generate considerably more revenue for the Concho Valley. Beef production is second only to cotton production with $128.1 million in annual sales in the Concho Valley. Collectively, livestock operations generate another $202.7 million in annual sales and $284.4 million in regional economic output. Texas is the largest sheep producer in the U.S. with 15% of the domestic ewe flock (445,000 head). Only California, Wyoming and Utah have more sheep than the 13 counties that comprise the Concho Valley.

For more information on Farm and Agriculture in San Angelo, scan the QR above to read the ‘Impact of Agriculture Report,’ prepared by the Economic Development Department.

Goodfellow Air Force Base

Goodfellow Air Force Base, located in San Angelo, is home to the 17th Training Wing. Its mission is to Train, Transform and Empower joint and coalition warriors. Goodfellow AFB also supports linguist training in the 517th Training Group, located at the Presidio of Monterey in California. Goodfellow AFB contributed $4.7 billion to the Texas economy in 2021 and provided employment for 9,690 personnel with a gross domestic product of $2.8 billion and a disposable personal income of $1.5 billion.

Back before Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt began a program of preparedness that included the construction of facilities dedicated to advanced air training. Civic leaders from San Angelo immediately recommended their community to the War Department. A generous offer of electrical service, railroad spur, sewer system and a 50-year lease on 640 acres at $1 per year easily decided the issue.

On 1 July 1993, the 17th Training Wing was activated at Goodfellow. With the change in name came a marked diversification and increase in mission as the base realignment and closure process brought special instruments training and fire protection training to the base. To support the increased training load, Goodfellow underwent extensive modernization and growth entering the 21st century as one of the most modern Air Force installations.

The base is vital to and greatly beloved by area residents and strongly contributes to San Angelo's quality of life. These brave men and women help make San Angelo and the world a better place to live! At any given time, there are over 7,000 military, civilians and their family members on the installation that also engage in our schools, neighborhoods, congregations and businesses.

THE FIRST GOODFELLOW 1ST LT. JOHN J. GOODFELLOW, JR.

MAY 17, 1895 - SEPTEMBER 14, 1918

After graduating from San Angelo High School in 1913, where he played football and the trombone, John Goodfellow, Jr. took a job with the Lone Star Gas Company in Fort Worth. He then studied civil engineering at The University of Texas.

He left to become an infantry officer but soon developed an interest in aviation. Graduating ground school in Austin and flying school in San Diego, CA, Goodfellow was commissioned as a second lieutenant in February 1918 and shipped immediately to England as an observation pilot with the 24th Aero Squadron.

On July 22nd his squadron transferred to France. Following additional training at St. Maixent and Ourches, the squadron attached to the First Army Observation Group at Gondreville on August 22nd in preparation for a major American offensive.

The offensive commenced on September 12th with the objective of reducing the German salient near St. Mihiel in N.E. France. On the 12th and 13th, the squadron conducted visual reconnaissance in the area of Thiaucourt, reporting the successful progress of the attack. Additional sorties on the 14th kept the German front under constant observation while six missions attempted deep reconnaissance of German movements behind the front, near Metz.

Goodfellow and his observer, 1st Lt. Elliot M. Durant, Jr., failed to return after one of these deep reconnaissance missions. According to one eyewitness, at least five enemy aircraft engaged Goodfellow’s Salmson 2A-2 reconnaissance plane, shooting away one wing and downing the aircraft after a furious dogfight. Three days later, Goodfellow’s remains were recovered at the crash site and later interred at the St. Mihiel American Military Cemetery near Nancy, France.

NEIGHBORHOODS

San Angelo and Tom Green County feature a variety of neighborhoods for homeowners. The City of San Angelo lists 24 distinct neighborhoods as numbered on the map. An ongoing building surge is adding new construction choices in several neighborhoods. People looking for a home with a boat dock for a waterfront views are often drawn to Lake Nasworthy (23). Quaint cottages on up to mansions are found on the tree-lined streets of Santa Rita (16) in the heart of San Angelo. Several streets in Santa Rita and other neighborhoods in San Angelo are located along or near the scenic Concho River.

Golf enthusiasts often find their dream home near San Angelo Country Club or Bentwood Country Club (22). Dark skies and scenic views near San Angelo State Park are available from back porches along the Bluffs neighborhood (7).

Lake Nasworthy

The city of San Angelo is blessed with good water resources by the Concho River/Twin Buttes Reservoir being the source that supplies water to a clean recreational body of water - Lake Nasworthy. This lake is a true, constant level lake, situated on the south edge of the city and Knickerbocker Road near the airport. This very stable, stump free lake affords about 500 homeowners the opportunity to have excellent lake frontage for boat docks and

lifts. The lake is well known for good fishing and boating, and yet close to town for easy commutes to work, restaurants, golf courses and shopping. There are many lake events held throughout the summer- fishing tournaments, drag boat races, wakeboard competitions and the very popular 4th of July fireworks display with great boating views illuminating the water across from the Goodfellow AFB lake recreational area.

there are no flood issues, where some Texas lakes (like Lake LBJ) tout being also constant level, yet there can be rainstorm flash flooding at the river source washing away boat docks and weeks of floating debris- usually meaning no boating for weeks.

The city has very nice parks around the lake and swim beaches, plus a great public fishing pier and boat ramps are plentiful for visiting boaters. Visit the numerous local realtors to find your special place here on Lake Nasworthy!

"San Angelo is a great family based town. It is more on the agriculture side, where farming and ranching is very normal. I like how it is small enough that everywhere you go is close but we still have lots of variety in food, shopping, and activities. The Concho River flows through San Angelo so fishing is very normal and we are known for Concho pearls. I would like to see a change in the number of homeless people we have, most being veterans as we have a base here. I would also like a change in construction because when there is any new road or business being built it typically takes extremely long to finish."

- Current Resident, October 2024

"San Angelo is a great place to live, offering a perfect blend of small-town charm and city amenities. The community is friendly, and there are plenty of outdoor activities like fishing, hiking, and enjoying the beautiful Concho River. The weather is warm most of the year, which makes it easy to get outside and stay active. There are some great restaurants and local shops, and the town has a rich history that adds character. The local arts scene and events are a nice touch too. One thing that could improve is more options for shopping and entertainment, especially for younger people. Overall, San Angelo is a welcoming and peaceful place to call home!"

- Current Resident, March 2024

"San Angelo Texas is in a region of West Texas known as “Last Verde” or last green before entering the desert oil fields of the permian basin. The city has a military prescience, Goodfellow AFB as well as a abundance of large medical facilities operated by Shannon Medical throughout the city limits. The people, mostly born and raised there, are extremely friendly polite and warm. This was a chosen place for myself as an implant not being originally from San Angelo. I served in the U.S. Army for 20 plus years and was medically retired due to combat injuries sustained during my service in support of the Global War on Terror (GWOT). The atmosphere, calmness of the city and easy laid back lifestyle makes it an oasis for myself in living my life after being a soldier."

When someone you love struggles with dementia, Parkinson’s or another form of cognitive or physical impairment, it can be a tremendous challenge to communicate and find ways to help him or her discover pleasure in the world. Personalized music can bridge the gap and enable you to reconnect with one another.

Grounded in extensive neuroscience research, our work with hundreds of individuals in care facilities has shown that many people benefit profoundly from hearing their favorite songs that tap fond memories. Here are some outcomes you or your loved one may experience:

Someone who has been silent or less communicative may begin to talk and become more social.

Someone who feels sad or depressed may feel happier.

Someone who has been less mobile may become more physically active.

Each Individual’s response is unique, but chances are good that he or she will have more pleasure in life again and that you will gain a peaceful, relaxing way to renew your friendship.

Music & Memory is all about bringing joy into the lives of people suffering from forms of dementia and a wide range of cognitive and physical impairments.

Shannon Cancer Center

SHANNONHEALTH.COM/SERVICES/CANCER-CARE

To keep up with the growing number of cancer patients in the area, Shannon Medical Center built a new cancer center. Opened in early November 2023, the cancer center is located at 131 E. Beauregard Ave., near the Shannon Clinic Lab and Shannon Clinic Pediatrics buildings.

The center is home to state-of-the-art equipment and treatment options and will be staffed by trusted specialists and medical oncologists. According to the Shannon Cancer Center’s website, the building is outfitted with the following amenities to help patients throughout their treatment:

• 28 outpatient chemotherapy chair stations, with each station equipped with a personal entertainment unit/television

• 2 Image Guidance Linear Accelerators

• Fully-staffed on-site pharmacy

• Patient education center

• Clinical and financial patient navigation services

• On-site supportive care, including social work and registered dietitians

Shannon provides a comprehensive cancer program to patients and their families in San Angelo and the surrounding areas. Their trusted specialists offer a complete range of services, enabling you to make the best possible choices during a difficult time. It their our goal to provide assistance, encouragement and exceptional care through vast resources. They take pride in the quality of their patient care, their team continually strives to uphold their values of accountability, service, integrity, respect and excellence.

Most recently Shannon’s radiation oncology department at the Shannon Cancer Center was recognized as a tattoo- and mark-free radiation treatment center. This is the only program of its kind in the western half of Texas. This designation from “Vision RT” highlights Shannon’s adoption of surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT), which eliminates the need for permanent or semi-permanent tattoos for patients undergoing radiation treatments.

This "exclusive, cutting-edge" technology helps Shannon offer more comfortable and more accurate treatment for radiation patients. While traditional radiation therapy relies on a series of tattoos on the patient’s body to help position the patient for treatment, the SGRT system scans the patient’s skin surface. It monitors the patient’s position before and during treatment. If the patient moves or shifts during treatment, treatment is automatically paused, and radiation therapists can reposition the patient without compromising the effectiveness of the treatment.

Additionally, for the second year in a row, Texas ranked as the worst state in the country for access to mental health services according to Forbes Advisor. These findings demonstrate the urgency to

make this right next step to address the behavioral health needs of our community,” Shannon President and CEO, Shane Plymell, said in a news release. “This new addition to the Shannon Health System will ensure community members of all ages who struggle with behavioral health and substance abuse issues will have expanded access to specialized care.”

Shannon Health System plans to expand the River Crest Hospital, adding 40 beds in two phases, each adding 20 beds. It also plans to upgrade the facility, its equipment and technology.

HIKING AND BIKING

If you want to get off the beaten path, head out to San Angelo State Park! With more than 60 miles of trails, it is a hiking and cycling heaven. The park has trails with a wide range of levels of difficulty. The Roadrunner Trail is an easy loop or explore the moderate Dinosaur Trail leading to the Permian Period track site and up to the challenging Roller Coaster Trail. A few of the trails are for hikers only, but many trails are open to cyclists and equestrian enthusiasts. The park offers guided hikes regularly and is a venue for larger events such as the West Texas Badlands Challenge and Crazy Desert Trail Races.

KAYAKING/CANOEING

San Angelo’s waterways have plenty of space to paddle kayaks, canoes and standup paddleboards. Boat launches are scattered along the Concho River, including Concho Park, South Concho Park and near downtown. Lake Nasworthy has more than 10 public access points with ramps. The most popular include Middle Concho Park, Spring Creek Park and Mary E. Lee Park. The lake offers different paddling experiences such as open water, channels with islands and water flowers. There are more than 20 miles available for a perimeter paddle around the lake. Twin Buttes Reservoir has several boat ramps, including the Twin Buttes Marina and South Pool. Boat ramps are also available at San Angelo State Park into O.C. Fisher Reservoir.

WALKING TRAILS

The Concho River Walk follows the Concho River for four miles and features along the path include the Santa Fe Golf Course, Kids’ Kingdom, a skate park and footbridges that traverse the river.

The Red Arroyo Trail is a 14-foot-wide path that runs from Knickerbocker Road to Sherwood Way. The path has several loops and spurs and totals four miles. Along the path, enjoy Art in Uncommon Places and mosaic benches. The dog park is also along the path system.

PARKS

From dog park to skate park, San Angelo is full of parks sure to please every member of the family. Set up camp at one of the parks around Twin Butte Reservoir and Lake Nasworthy. Bike along the Red Arroyo tributaries through rolling plains and riparian zones with native plants and wildflowers, trees, birds and animals of many types. Watch the kiddos as they climb through the maze-like Kid’s Kingdom playground then have a BBQ picnic lunch while relaxing under a pavilion. Join a bocce ball game in The Bosque area, an art-filled and riverside pocket forest. Take four-legged family members over to the dog park where you will find one area for smaller dogs and another for larger breeds. Or grab your board and head over to the skate park for ollies and kickflips.

Christmas at Old Fort Concho

FORTCONCHO.COM/HOME/EVENTS/ CHRISTMAS-AT-OLD-FORT-CONCHO/

Texas history comes alive at San Angelo’s Fort Concho, a onetime home to the Buffalo Soldiers and famed military commander, Pecos Bill. Thankfully, the fort’s fighting days are over, and it’s turned into a gentler leaf. It now spends its days hosting a massive Christmas celebration for all to enjoy. Christmas at Old Fort Concho takes advantage of all the fort’s 40 acres and 24 buildings, transforming them into a winter wonderland during

the first full weekend of December. Every day of the event, you can check out the Winter Rendezvous, a large-scale reenactment of campsites and traders in the 1800s. You’ll also be able to see the “troops” drill, shoot their weapons, and ride around on horseback. When you go inside the fort, you’ll find a market of artisan goods perfect for your Christmas list or a little something for yourself. A food court will keep you energized so you can keep exploring the fort and browsing all the unique items for sale! For the kids, the fort will have plenty of areas with activities and crafts, all of which are free. And not only will there be live music, but musicians will also be strolling the grounds. So, if you can’t find the music, it’ll find you.
