THE PLACE TO LIVE, WORK AND PLAY
Rowlett is home to over 68,000 residents and is nestled on the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard in far east Dallas County and a portion of west Rockwall County. Just 20 minutes east of downtown Dallas, Rowlett rests on two peninsulas reaching out into Lake Ray Hubbard with more than 30 miles of lovely shoreline. Here, you can kick back, relax and watch the sun set on the shimmering waters of the lake, kayak from Scenic Point Park, picnic with the family, or participate in any number of water sports, which makes us one of only a handful of communities in the region that can offer this type of lakeside living.
Rowlett residents choose to live here because they can enjoy all of the amenities a close-knit community can offer. In Rowlett, you’ll find award-winning schools, unique shopping opportunities, affordable homes, top quality health care, an outstanding regional hospital, beautiful lakeside parks, a variety of community entertainment and special events and much, much more.
Rowlett has its doors wide open to the world and has become a prime location for new development with the President George Bush Turnpike and the DART Blue Line light rail, offering easy access to the entire DFW Metroplex. These two major regional transportation avenues serve as the economic engines that bring visitors and major development directly to the heart of Rowlett, making it the destination of choice for even more businesses, as well as for potential new residents who desire attractive, affordable urban-style lakeshore living.

CHAMBER
The Rowlett Area Chamber & Visitors Center was established in 1924 as the source of business leadership in Rowlett. At the time, the city was evolving from a small agricultural town into the fastgrowing city it is today. Over the last 100 years, the Chamber’s look and focus has changed as leadership has changed. Earlier this year, Chamber industry veteran Sharon Mayer, IOM, CCE took on the role as our Chamber’s President and CEO. Rowlett Chamber Board President, Stephen Causey, had an opportunity to sit down with Sharon so we can all get to know her and her vision better.
Stephen: “Hi Sharon! Thanks for having me here today. Let’s start off with an easy question. I noticed you have a Texas Rangers ceremonial Louisville slugger in your office. Can you tell us the story behind it?”
Sharon: “This question makes me smile because this is one of my favorite chamber memories. In 1990 there was a drive by Dallas to recruit the Rangers to relocate with offers of a new ballfield and other amenities if they would leave Arlington. The Rangers were a big economic asset for the City of Arlington, and they obviously didn’t want to see this happen. As a result, a citizens group was formed under the name Homerun Arlington - Let’s Keep the Rangers! I was the Chamber staff liaison and treasurer for this initiative. I worked directly with Rangers’ President Tom Schieffer, Co-owner George W Bush, Mayor Richard Greene, and members of the Vandergriff family and respected business and community leaders. The Chamber contracted with an architect to develop a model of what a new ballpark would look like, and the Homerun Arlington committee got busy advocating for the sales tax referendum to fund the new facility. This was a 100% grass roots effort with phone banks, letters to editors, newspaper and radio advertising and door-to-door visits asking the citizens of Arlington vote YESthey did. The fact is that Arlington would not have the sports complex it has today had it not been for this initiative to keep
the Rangers! Anyone who wants to get nostalgic can come see my 2 1/2-inch-thick notebook with all the details of this very successful campaign.”
Stephen: “I have to say, your 35-year career in the Chamber industry is truly remarkable. Can you share some highlights of where you’ve worked and the roles you’ve held during this time?”
Sharon: “My journey into the Chamber world was unplanned. A longtime friend, the President of the Arlington Chamber, asked if I could fill in for a couple of weeks while the receptionist was on vacation. As a part-time stay-at-home mom, I agreed. Six years later, I had progressed from receptionist to VP of Member Services, completing my IOM coursework in four years instead of six. After gaining extensive experience, I applied for the President position at the DeSoto Chamber. Despite the leap of faith, it worked out well. After 2 ½ years and a relationship with my now-husband, Paul Mayer, I learned about the same position opening in Allen. Paul, the CEO of the Garland Chamber for 35 years, served as my mentor during my transition to Allen. With young children in the GISD, the move was convenient. During my 26-year tenure in Allen, I integrated the Town of Fairview, renamed the Chamber to Allen Fairview Chamber, grew membership to 600, achieved five-star accreditation and earned my CCE status, a career-long goal.
Stephen: “Since you’ve started with us at the Rowlett Chamber, you’ve already implemented several small changes. What significant changes can we expect in the future?”
Sharon: “I think all changes are significant if they benefit the membership. Yes, I’ve added some programs such as the Business Education Quarterly Series and Party with a Purpose, but the real changes lie within the chamber - developing processes and procedures to streamline the day-to-day
activities of staff members. I’ve visited with members about bringing back some former programs such as the Rowlett Professional Women’s group, revitalizing the Young Professionals and starting a Senior Service Alliance. Engaging different segments of our membership is the key to success within the Chamber. I’m hoping to grow the chamber organically through referrals from satisfied chamber members. I’m listening to all suggestions!”
Stephen: “What challenges do you foresee for the Chamber in the next few years, and how do you plan to overcome them?”
Sharon: “I see a lot of opportunities - continuing to strengthen our relationships with all entities, building our membership base which would allow us to be fully staffed, truly being the trusted voice of the business community, and contributing to the economic growth and vitality of Rowlett, its citizens and businesses.
Stephen: “As a seasoned professional in the Chamber industry, what advice would you offer to someone new to entrepreneurship?”
Sharon: “Have a business plan and a financial plan. I’ve witnessed truly great ideas become really bad business ventures because the owner did not have the financial backing to sustain the business through the no to little revenue growth period. I watched one business in Allen sustain themselves by utilizing personal credit cards to pay rent and purchase products to resell. Once they were so far over their head in debt, they were asking for the Chamber’s help in securing a bank loan. There was nothing that could be done and they eventually closed and had to file for bankruptcy. For a Chamber who invests in their members this was heartbreaking. If a business owner does not have a business plan, we can help - we are working with the SBDC to bring a SCORE counselor to Rowlett on a regular basis. SCORE provides free business counseling.”
Stephen: “From your perspective, what are the key benefits for a business in joining the Chamber?”
Sharon: “The first thought is always networking but the Chamber provides benefits if you never show up at a networking event. I don’t like the term networking and prefer relationship building because that’s what its really aboutRelationships. So, what other benefits do we provide? To sum it up: Advocacy, Education & Relationship building. Each are accomplished in different ways - we advocate on behalf of business and make decisions on legislative issues based on how it affects Rowlett’s business community. We educate
through programs such as our quarterly education series and luncheon speakers. We help build relationships at Make a Connection and Party with a Purpose but more importantly by making those introductions on behalf of our members to elected officials and other business to business leaders. We provide resources to all businesses, it’s up to them to use those to their advantage.”
Stephen: “Let’s get to know you a little on a personal level. What’s a surprising fact about you that not many people know?”
Sharon: “I’m a natural introvert, but a situational extrovert! You can learn to overcome your fears and have confidence in yourself - all it takes is that one person who won’t let you quit!”
Stephen: “I’m a big fan of the 80s. If you could travel back to that decade and attend any concert, which artist or band would you choose to see?”
Sharon: “I’m not a big concert fan - I don’t really like crowds, but if I have to choose, it’s always going to be Willie! I remember when I first came to Texas in the late 70s, hanging out with my sister one evening at Whiskey River in Dallas and this guy with a ponytail just walked onto the stage and started singing - I was hooked! This was mid-week and he just showed up unexpectedly - right time, right place! Now if you want to know who I’d like to see in concert from the 60s, we can talk!”
Stephen: “Do you have a favorite movie?”
Sharon: “When Harry Met Sally - both my husband and I are big ‘romcom’ fans and quote movie lines all the time. So many great ones from this movie! And I like happy endings.”
Stephen: “What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done, and what did you learn from the experience?”
Sharon: “Scuba diving - my first open water dive in Aruba. I dove the wreck of the Rhone (those who remember the movie "The Deep" will get it) and then a wall dive - which was crazy! No one should do that on their first dive. What I learned was that I can overcome my fear, you can breathe underwater, and there are no monsters lurking in the ocean.”
Stephen: “Well Sharon, it’s been a pleasure to get to know our new CEO of the Rowlett Chamber a little better. Thank you making the move here to Rowlett for what I’m confident will be the best Chamber you will have led yet! We look forward to the future with you!”

UPCOMING DEVELOPMENTS
In January 2024, Dallas-based real estate developer Jackson-Shaw Co. announced plans to build the 1.8-million sq. ft. business park here in Rowlett. Called Lakeview Business District, the industrial park will consist of seven buildings situated on 165 acres and be constructed in two phases. Construction on phase one commenced in early March and is expected to be completed in March 2025.
Rowlett Mayor Blake Margolis estimates the business park could generate about 1,000 new jobs, more than $74 million in tax revenue and serve as a catalyst for more development in Rowlett's North Shore area.
Lakeview Business District's first tenant is SAF-Holland, who announced in April 2024 its plans to build a new manufacturing facility that will focus on high complexity and high variation specialty fifth wheel manufacturing. The company says the new facility is the next phase of its manufacturing optimization and vertical integration strategy to increase capacity output. SAF-Holland says after nearly 50 years, producing over three million fifth wheels, the Wylie operation will move to the new facility after construction.
“We are incredibly proud to break ground on Lakeview Business District, a project which has been designed to meet the needs of a wide range of businesses, from local manufacturers seeking modern facilities, such as SAF Holland, to regional and national distributors,” said Jackson-Shaw’s Vice President of Development Miles Terry. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to be part of the ongoing growth in the City of Rowlett and to the great community here that has helped make the North Shore project a reality and bring Lakeview Business District to life.”

DALLAS COLLEGE
Through the educational opportunities provided by Dallas College and its multiple locations, students can ascend and aspire toward their dreams – just like Carmesia Washington.
Washington started attending Dallas College’s Mountain View Campus in 1998. But, college fell to the backburner as she started a family and then embarked on a career in IT.
However, Washington never gave up on her dreams of completing a college degree and always knew she’d love to teach one day. A couple decades later when she was ready to return to school, Dallas College remained the perfect spot for Washington.
Not only did she earn an associate degree but she was then part of the second graduating class in 2024 to earn a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. Now, Washington has a full-time job teaching second grade.
“I wake up every day ready to go see my second graders,” Washington said.
Washington is just one of the many success stories coming out of Dallas College on a regular basis. The college continues to break barriers and transform lives and communities through higher education. With an annual student population of 122,000 and a workforce of 6,000 employees, Dallas College’s impact on the local community is immense.
For students such as Washington, Dallas College continues to innovate and lead the way in higher education as one of the nation’s largest community colleges. The bachelor’s program in education has been recognized for its innovative approach. Dallas College also now offers a bachelor’s program in nursing through its School of Health Sciences.
The best part for students is Dallas College charges the
same price for a bachelor’s degree program as an associate degree program: $79 per credit hour. Along with the bachelor’s programs, Dallas College offers associate degree and career/ technical certificate programs in more than 100 areas of study.
Just how good is the education at Dallas College? The quality is seen in how far the alumni have gone – drama students who have gone on to starring roles in Broadway shows, culinary students who have become executive research chefs at some of the largest snack food companies, and general associate degree students who are in executive positions with professional sports franchises.
Jaime Resendez, a Dallas College alumni who now runs his own law firm and serves on the Dallas City Council, might have put it best when it comes to Dallas College’s impact. “Some people want to act like there’s a stigma attached to (community colleges). To me, I see it the opposite way. I take so much pride in my experience at Dallas College,” he said.
“It forms me to this day.”

LAKE RAY HUBBARD
In Rowlett, life moves to the rhythm of the lake. At 22,000 acres, Lake Ray Hubbard is one of the largest lakes in northern Texas - and the largest in the DFW metroplex. Here you can find plenty of nice beaches, trails and other outdoor activities. Boating is where Lake Ray Hubbard really shines. Locals take advantage of Lake Ray Hubbard’s closeness to the city for all kinds of watersports. Plenty of boat ramps are available in the form of public and fee-based launching in the parks and marinas scattered around the lake.
If you’re looking to spend the day with a stick in your hand and a bucket hat on your head, Lake Ray Hubbard is just the place for you. Predominant fish species include white and hybrid striped bass, largemouth bass, channel and blue catfish and white crappie. Hybrid striped bass and blue catfish have become the most abundant sport fish in the lake in the last few years.
PARKS
