Katie is a home-grown local and most of her family still lives here. She graduated from Texas A&M Corpus Christi with a Communications degree. She lived in San Antonio for 9 years and worked heavily within organizing events during her Edward Jones Investments career while coaching club volleyball. She recently moved home to Marble Falls and began event planning and fundraising for the Marble Falls Education Foundation before moving into her current role for the Chamber. She has been voted onto the Education Foundation board, is the treasurer for the Marble Falls Youth Baseball Softball Association and handles PR for the Marble Falls Rodeo Association. Katie has a love for travel, being outdoors with family and friends, or catch her out on a boat or on her Harley.

Jarrod is originally from the Waco area and graduated from Texas A&M University. After more than ten years as a teacher in Katy, Jarrod moved home and began working at the Extraco Events Center as the VP of the Heart O’ Texas Fair for eight years, which has prepared him for his current role. Jarrod’s wife Heather works for Marble Falls ISD as the Executive Director of Secondary Education. Braedon, his oldest son, recently graduated from Texas A&M University and is pursuing a career Agricultural Sales and Bryson, his younger son, is currently attending Texas State University. Jarrod has a love for the outdoors, specifically hunting and fishing. When not spending time with family, you will likely find him on one of the Highland Lakes.

Veronica is a Marble Falls native who continues to enjoy serving the Highland Lakes community. She is a proud Texas Tech University Alumni with a degree in General Studies with focuses in Business Administration, Human Resources and Exercise & Sports Science. Veronica and her husband JR have three children. Jessica is a Concordia University graduate who now works for the family business. Aleena, 8, is a 3rd grader at MFISD and enjoys playing sports and Emmett is 2 years old. JR, is also a Marble Falls native. He is a Master Electrician who owns All Power Electrical, LLC and enjoys serving the Texas Hill Country as well! They enjoy all the family time they can get in between busy schedules.

EARLY LIFE

Marble Falls was named for the waterfalls now located at the bottom of Lake Marble Falls. As early as 1817 the falls were used as a landmark by travelers and were referred to as the "great falls" or the "marble falls" of the Colorado River. Though they are now underwater, they are revealed every few years when the lake is lowered by the LCRA for repairs.

Beginning in the early days of the Texas Republic, the area was colonized by Germans farmers and ranchers. In addition, a small colony was established by early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of LatterDay Saints (Mormons) in the early 1850s. Both of these groups aided greatly in the area development and still have an important impact and presence here today.

OFFICIAL FOUNDING

Charles S. Todd made an effort to establish a town at the falls in 1854. Several lots were sold, but few homes were built, so "Todd's Village" faded before it ever really started. Eventually the land was sold to pay taxes. Later in 1854, Adam R. “Stovepipe” Johnson saw the falls and officially named the area "Marble Falls." He wanted to build a town on the site, but his project remained a dream until the 1880s. There was some difficulty in establishing a clear title to the land, but by 1886 Johnson succeeded in buying one-half and controlling the rest of the original Baker grant, which included the falls area.

RAPID GROWTH

In June 1887, Johnson and nine other investors chartered the Texas Mining & Improvement Company to handle the business of the new town. In July of that year, lots in the new town were advertised for sale.

Within just three years, Marble Falls had Methodist and Baptist churches, a cotton gin, a gristmill, a

tannery, a shoe factory, three general stores, a hotel, a weekly newspaper, and 400+ residents.

In 1891, the Marble Falls Alliance University was chartered, but was in operation only a few years. Its facilities were later purchased by the public school system when an independent school district was formed.

A mayor-alderman form of government was instituted, and in 1907 the first city officials were elected.

FEMALE TRAILBLAZER

On February 2, 1917, Ophelia “Birdie” Harwood became mayor of Marble Falls - three years before women had the right to vote. She was the first female mayor in Texas and the first in the United States to be seated by an all-male electorate.

ROCK SOLID INDUSTRY

It was Granite Mountain, the 866 ft. stone monolith looming on the western edge of the town, secured Marble Falls’ place in Texas history. It was here that granite for the Galveston Seawall was quarried as well as the famed “Texas Red Sunset” granite used to construct the Texas State Capitol Building.

The stone was donated to the citizens of Texas from the progressive area owners in exchange for a rail connection from Austin to the mountain. Blacks, Hispanics, Scots and early U.S. immigrants worked to develop granite as a big commercial endeavor.

The Austin & Northwestern Railroad built a passenger extension from Granite Mountain to

Marble Falls in 1889, which further opened the area to commerce. A post office was also established that year.

Granite Mountain is actively quarried today and a variety of granite products are shipped all over the world.

You will find over 30 Texas Historic Markers in the area. Marker sites include: several for activities or construction before 1900, locations of historically significant events as well as several churches, homes and business buildings.

CIVIC LEADERSHIP

The City of Marble Falls is a home rule city with a council-manager form of government. The city council is composed of a mayor and six members elected at large under a place system. Each council member occupies a place on the council and is elected by plurality from all candidates running for that place by the qualified voters of the city.

Each member serves a staggered 2 year term, thus 3 of the members are voted on 1 year, with the remaining members, including the mayor, elected the following year. An individual may serve a maximum number of three terms as council member and three terms as mayor. An individual may not serve more than four consecutive terms as both mayor and as a council member. Regular city council elections are held on the 2nd Saturday in May.

The city council operates under the home rule city charter adopted by the citizens of Marble Falls. The council is responsible for: approving or rejecting zoning changes; considering city ordinances and resolutions, establishing city policies, establishing the annual budget to provide services to the public, a setting the city tax rate and water and wastewater rates.

Marble Falls, traditionally a quiet retreat in the Texas Hill Country, is steadily morphing into a buzzworthy business and residential hub. With the local retail trade area projected to hit 150,000, developers are not just participating but also responding to the changes, with large projects like the $750 million Legacy Crossing and the soon-to-be-realized Falls 281 setting the stage for a diversified economy.

NEW DEVELOPMENT

SHOPS AT FLATROCK CROSSING

A new, $130 million shopping center is set to bring big name retail and restaurant brands to Marble Falls for the first time. Shops at Flatrock Crossing is a new power anchored center with versatile spaces and the potential for long-term growth in Marble Falls. The 350,000-square-foot development is estimated

to have a $1.75 billion economic impact over 10 years and employ over 1,000 people, according to city documents.

Academy Sports + Outdoors will anchor the 330,000-square-foot center. Other tenants will include T.J. Maxx, Ulta Beauty, Five Below, Famous Footwear, James Avery and Maurices. Construction began in June 2024.

CERTIFIED MUSIC FRIENDLY

The City of Marble Falls has been designated a Music Friendly Texas Certified Community, as announced by Gov. Greg Abbott in January 2024. Awarded by the Texas Music Office, the program focuses on facilitating “music business-related economic development and job creation in Texas cities and communities,” per the release. In his “Congratulations to the City of Marble Falls on earning the Music Friendly Texas Certified Community designation,” Abbott said in the release. “Music is key to the Texas brand and is deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of our great state. Music Friendly Texas Communities certified by the Texas Music Office work hard to attract and develop the local music industry to boost local job creation and economic growth. In fact, with support from the Texas Music Office, the Texas music industry accounted for more than 192,000 direct and indirect permanent jobs and generated more than $26 billion in economic activity statewide in 2022. Together, we will continue to work alongside communities in every region of our state to amplify their growth and success.”

LEGACY CROSSING

In August 2022, the Marble Falls City Council approved a development agreement with 71/281 Investments and MMK Ventures LLC, the Austin-based residential developer on the $750 million Legacy Crossing mixed-use project. The project is projected to bring more than 1,000 homes, more than 200 multi-family units and hundreds of thousands of square feet of retail and commercial space to 546 acres at the southeast corner of U.S. Highway 281 and State Highway 71.

Site plans include 115 acres of commercial space that is expected to total 800,000 square feet of retail and commercial space; the 264-unit apartment "Flatz 281" apartment complex being developed on 13 acres by Z Modular, a subsidiary of Zekelman Industries Inc.; and 1,343 single-family homes on the remaining acreage.

Flatz 281 is slated to be completed in fall 2024 and will feature garden-style apartment buildings that will be split into six three-story walk-up buildings. The property will also include a clubhouse with a pool and full amenities, including a bocce ball court, two dog parks, golf simulator, volleyball courts and a patio area with grills and fire pits.

The name for the full project, Legacy Crossing, pays homage to the fact that the land has only been in the hands of a couple of owners over the last few hundred years – while also paying tribute to those who were involved in the investment over the last two decades.

Located in the heart of the Highland Lakes region of the beautiful Texas Hill Country, Marble Falls ISD is a district of destination. Families are drawn to Marble Falls schools for the supportive atmosphere and opportunities for their children to grow and flourish in their educational and extracurricular journey. The focus on their District Mission delivers an array of exciting and challenging opportunities for students to become involved in various activities. All members of MFISD passionately work to teach students the State of Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, on-grade level and to the depth and complexity necessary

Although large in size, the Marble Falls ISD area offers residents a home-town atmosphere with plenty of terrific dining and shopping alternatives. MFISD is classified as a 4-A district and has a growing enrollment exceeding 4,000 students. The District has four elementary schools, all of which offer pre-kindergarten through 5th grades: Colt Elementary; Marble Falls Elementary; Highland Lakes Elementary; and Spicewood Elementary.

The Central Texas College site in Marble Falls is located in the Frank Fickett Center, 806 Steve Hawkins Parkway. Freshman and sophomore classes are smaller to encourage student participation and to help students become more comfortable with the learning environment. High school students can get a head start on college with our dual credit program.

Marble Falls benefits from community support from local businesses and charities which provide scholarship opportunities for our students. CTC offers quality college credit courses while maintaining some of the lowest tuition rates in the state of Texas.

Students can earn an associate’s degree while completing their core curriculum toward countless areas of study right here in the Hill Country. The TTU Regional Teaching Site at Highland Lakes, located in the Frank Fickett Center, offers upper-level courses towards bachelor's degrees in a variety of disciplines. Degrees available include Digital Media/ Professional Communication and Political Science, as well as the Tech Teach teacher education program that combines student teaching in local districts with online education courses.

Most students at the regional site choose interdisciplinary degree programs, which allow students a flexible, affordable and prestigious education without having to re-locate to the main campus. The degree options combine three areas of study to meet the students' career goals, while also providing the knowledge and skills needed by local employers and industries.

Also available at the regional site is the Rawls College of Business Professional MBA, a 2-year program with concentrations in General Business or Big Data.

CITY PARKS

The Parks and Recreation Department maintains approximately 150 acres of park land, sports parks, trails, greenbelts and facilities in Marble Falls. There are two parks in Marble Falls that have water access and

are located close to the center of town – Lakeside Park & Johnson Park.

Johnson Park offers safe and exciting playgrounds under large oak & pecan trees, or an individual or family picnic can be enjoyed under a shaded pavilion.

Westside Park is connected to Johnson Park with a half mile walking path along Backbone Creek and has an 18-hole disc golf course along with other amenities including fenced, off-leash area for furry friends.

Falls Creek Park has several picnic tables, barbeque pits, a canoe-launch area and restroom facilities. It is also the location of the Falls Creek Park Skatepark.

GOLFING

For those interested in chasing the little white ball around some wonderful courses, five different ones can be encountered in the area. There are four 18-hole courses – Hidden Falls Marble Falls, Delaware Springs Burnet, The Legends Kingsland, The Lighthouse Kingsland plus one 9-hole course – Blue Lake Golf Club - with two sets of tees.

LAKES

We may be named after a falls, but we've got a lake named after us! In addition to Lake Marble Falls, there are also three other beautiful lakes within a short drive: Lake LBJ, Inks Lake and Lake Buchanan. As you can imagine, there's no shortage of year-round sports, leisure, and adventures to have out on the water in Marble Falls. Residents and visitors enjoy our sandy beach, fishing for catfish and largemouth bass, boating, paddle boarding, kayaking/canoeing and more!

LAKESIDE PARK POOL & BEACH

Lakeside Park on Lake Marble Falls offers swimming access to the lake as well as several splash pools perfect for young children. Come wriggle your toes in the sandy beach, jump into Lake Marble Falls, or just take a dip in one of the wading pools. The park includes a roped-off swimming area so you can enjoy the lake without worrying about boats and other watercraft. You can also take a dip in the nearby pool which features a diving board, a water slide and a wading pool with a mushroom water feature for the little ones.

STATE/REGIONAL PARKS

There are five parks located less than 60 miles from town and the Hill Country scenery makes for a beautiful drive.

A hidden jewel of the Texas park system, Colorado Bend is situated in the Hill Country along the Colorado River and is home to Gorman Falls, a 65 foot waterfall paradise. Fishing, hiking, biking, kayaking and other great opportunities abound. Colorado Bend is also home to Spicewood Springs - one of the best swimming holes in the Hill Country.

Enchanted Rock is a magical Texas state park in Hill Country known for its giant pink granite dome - the largest isolated pink granite dome in the United States. Hiking to the top of Enchanted Rock is one of the most popular things to do in the park. The rock covers 640 acres and is 1,825 feet above sea level at its tallest! In addition to day access for hiking in Enchanted Rock, the park also offers camping, rock climbing and stargazing, it is an International Dark Sky Park!

Inks Lake State Park is great for a day trip or a weekend getaway. Because the lake’s level usually stays constant, you can play here year-round. On land, you can camp, backpack, geocache, play volleyball, picnic, and observe nature. Here you'll find 9 miles of hiking trails through shady forests and across rocky hills. Stop by the bird blind to see who's visiting. On the water, you can swim, boat, water ski, scuba dive and fish. They have set aside a large, no-wake zone for paddling.

Longhorn Caverns is a unique Hill Country destination full of natural beauty and Texas-sized tales.

Corps (CCC), the park’s star attraction is Longhorn Cavern, an underground wonder created by an ancient river's dissolving and cutting action. Enjoy a guided cave tour, hike a Hill Country trail and admire some of Texas' best examples of historic CCC architecture.

Pedernales Falls State Park has arguably some of the most beautiful and unique scenery in the Texas Hill Country. While the river itself is reason enough to visit the park, scenic trails wind through forests, atop ridges and along the riverside. You can cross its waterfalls, and delve into the nooks and crannies formed by the boulders in the riverbeds and along the shoreline.

At the preserve, you not only witness a place of extraordinary beauty, you observe a living laboratory. You walk through hundreds of thousands of years of geologic formations as you hike to the bottom of the canyon and at the head of the canyon is a lush, wet grotto where you can see with your own eyes how the water cycle works. In 1965, Lady Bird Johnson planted wildflower seeds across America, and lucky for us, her Hill Country home received a little extra love. Bluebonnets, Texas Paintbrushes, Yuccas and many other wildflowers are painting landscapes all over Marble Falls. Breathe in their beautiful smells, snap all the photos - just don’t pick ‘em! Each spring, people visit from all over to admire and photograph the beautiful wildflowers located all over the Hill Country. The challenge of the wildflower viewing is not just the finding and walking among them but doing so safely. To aid visitors and locals in search of the best and safest displays, the CVB investigates potential viewing areas for colors and variety and then makes the information available to those wishing to see beautiful expanses of nature’s artful works.

4TH OF JULY

Come celebrate the 4th at Lakeside Park with live music, food and a firework display over the lake! Fireworks will go off approximately 9:15 pm and last 15-20 minutes.

FALL FESTIVAL

This is a four-day event in Johnson Park and includes multiple nights of free live music, local and tasty foods, carnival rides and games and enjoying some cooler weather during your family fun.

HOWDY-ROO CHILI COOKOFF

Each year, grill masters & chili culinarians converge at Lakeside Park & pavilion for the Howdy-Roo cook-off. With 150 cooks competing each year, it truly is a recipe for fun, laughter and spicy cuisine.

LAKEFEST

The Chamber of Commerce and Southern Drag Boat Assoc. have teamed up to host this much loved event that provides spectators the rush of adrenaline as drag boats race along Lake Marble Falls at 200mph. LakeFest draws some of the fastest boats as well as some of the greatest fans.

MARBLE FALLS RODEO

Take part in a true Texas tradition at the Marble Falls Rodeo, an open and pro-level event held on the 3rd weekend of July. Competitions include bull riding, calf roping, steer wrestling and mutton busting. The event includes a rodeo parade, food/ drink vendors, a dance and live music.

MAYFEST

Mayfest in Marble Falls is a four day community event in Johnson Park that features plenty of familyfriendly fun. Carnival rides and games, free concerts, and plenty of great food can be found during Mayfest. In addition, arts and crafts vendors set up shop in downtown Marble Falls for Main Street Market Day on the last day of the event.

PAINT THE TOWN

For one week in late March and early April, watch 40+ plein air artists painting at various area locations, purchase some pieces for your own collection, and enjoy everything else this event has to offer. You’ll see dozens of expert artists painting lakeside and other locations like Historic Main Street.

SCULPTURE ON MAIN

Sculpture On Main, first mounted in 2007, is a unique showing of public art within the Historic Downtown Marble Falls area. The current sculpture display, juried in 2016, represents the best of artists from around the region. In addition to our rotating sculpture exhibit, mosaic pieces created and donated by Father Jairo Lopez are displayed on Main Street and within the Marble Falls Visitor Center.

WALKWAY OF LIGHTS

The Marble Falls Walkway of Lights is one of the biggest holiday events in the Highland Lakes every year. Two million lights on more than 130 sculptures illuminate Lakeside Park beginning each year in November. Walkway of Lights runs 6-10 p.m. each day through the season - weather permitting.
