Abstract

Since its inception, the “Québec Entrepreneurship Contest” (QEC) has received thousands of applications from new businesses and student projects throughout Québec. For the 10th edition (2008), the winners were selected amongst almost 5,000 projects entered by 100,000 men and women of all ages from all over the province. The QEC focuses on youth in schools and on new entrepreneurs who are often at the business planning stage. Come listen as we share “highlights” and the various positive impacts of Entrepreneurship Development on the applicants and on the economy of the province of Québec.

Entrepreneurship Development: Its Positive Impacts!

Vincent Dumont currently works as the Interim Director, Operations and Special Projects for the Québec Entrepreneurship Contest. Having completed his studies in business administration, M. Dumont has been working in the entrepreneurship network for over four years now.

Career Cruising is an online career exploration tool designed to help clients with multiple barriers identify careers that match their interests, and explore and research the necessary education and training to enter those occupations. We will focus on how Career Cruising helps clients better understand themselves and create a Career Portfolio highlighting their accomplishments and goals. Counsellors and Centre Managers will also learn how Career Cruising’s powerful portfolio tool can be used to track client activities, extract data, record meetings and even communicate with clients. Participants not currently licensed will receive free trial access for use in their workplace and with their clients.

Lynn Sadlowski is a former career studies teacher, school counsellor and department head in the secondary panel in Ontario. She has also worked as a youth employment counsellor in community-based programs. She has over 15 years experience in helping youth with career exploration, goal setting and job search.

The Mentorship Outreach Program at Vancouver Island University, sponsored by The Counselling Foundation of Canada, will highlight how the ideas of a few Adult Basic Education students grew into a campus wide peer mentorship program that joyfully spills over into the whole community. Sheridan College’s highly successful Peer Mentor programme is a Student Leadership Development programme now in its 10th year of operation and they will talk about: Publicity and Promotion; Recruiting, Hiring & Mentor Training; Evaluation; Student engagement strategies and projects on campus.

How Two Post–Secondary Institutions are Promoting Peer Mentorship

Jo Acampora has 23 years experience as a career practitioner and group facilitator in both educational and community-based settings. She currently enjoys helping students realize their full potential through helping others. She has been a sought after trainer and facilitator at conferences in BC and across Canada. Lynn Hunter has been committed to working with youth and adults in educational settings for over 25 years. Currently a Student Success Advisor for Adult Basic Education Students, she is an avid advocate for disadvantaged learners. Judith MacKinnon, M.Ed.has been Career Counsellor and Peer Mentor Coordinator at Sheridan since 2001. Judith has worked extensively across Canada as both teacher and counsellor. She holds a Masters degree in Education, with additional graduate studies in Career and Disability Issues. She is a certified MBTI practioner, and a Personality Dimensions workshop facilitator. Joe Henry, M.Ed.(Adult Education and Community Development) is the Supervisor of Student Leadership and Engagement at Sheridan and coordinates the Peer Mentor Programme over the two campuses. Joe has extensive background with student services at both Sheridan and Brock University. Joe also teaches within the Educational Assistant Programme. In 2007, Joe facilitated the review of the Peer Mentor Programme.
