Budding club digs into gardening improvement project Max Aden Staff Reporter

Is it possible that a small team of around 10 students can make a difference on the earth’s environment? Absolutely. The Millard South Environmental Club is one of the smallest clubs in the school, but with a huge impact. Working little by little, each and every member is dedicated to improving and educating our school, as well as the community around us. Language arts teacher Tessa Adams, who is in charge of the club, said, “Environmental Club kids are the best around. They’re driven by purpose to educate and act.” For their most recent project, Environmental Club is putting special focus on the garden outside the south

entrance of the school. The original caretaker of the garden has retired, and the club took the initiative to take over this position. The team has already started clearing out the old plants, replanting the new ones, and mulching. “We’re all really excited about the new garden, it deserves only the best care,” avid member senior Hannah Hughes said. In the spring, the club will be in charge of upkeep for the new and improved garden. The Environmental club is also looking forward to different events and activities that will happen next semester. In January, they will be taking a field trip to the Firstar Fiber Corporation here in Omaha where they’ll be able to go

behind the scenes and see how a recycling plant operates. The club also adopts two animals each year through the WWF (World Wildlife Fund). The funds will help to save some of the world’s most endangered species from extinction. One of the biggest weeks of the year for the club is Earth week (along with Earth day) which falls on April 22. During Earth week, Environmental club finds ways to communicate and inform through different outlets in the school, using a certain hashtag on Instagram (to be determined), and through various forms of social media.
