We caught up with HARLEEN writer/artist Stjepan Šejic ´ to learn more about his captivating take on Harley Quinn’s formative years.
What’s your approach to illustrating Harley and The Joker in your distinct style?
What inspired you to tell this story?
Harleen is not Harley Quinn. Not yet. She is not wearing tight spandex or anything like that. She is reserved, but even so, in this twisted romance of theirs I must sell you on their chemistry. I must make you understand how this relationship of theirs could possibly work before I show you why it was always doomed.
It started just after I saw the movie Batman: Assault on Arkham. I remember looking at Harley Quinn and The Joker and thinking these two are like a smutty romance novel taken to its logical conclusion instead of an ideal one. She is there to save him from the darkness. In the romance novels she would succeed. Here it is the opposite. What does this story reveal about Harley and her origin that readers haven’t seen? Harleen Quinzel is flawed. She made some bad decisions in life that have followed her ever since. But the most important and defining quality of her in this story is, she means well. She is a doctor. She is here to help. But as the old saying goes, the road to Hell is paved with good intentions.
The Joker in my version is a rock star. Wall-to-wall charisma when he wants, but cross him and he can be the stuff of nightmares. Your dangerous love interest that everyone warns you against, but in a romance you don’t listen. You think maybe you can help him. What other Batman characters play a part in the story? Harvey Dent/Two-Face as the de facto antagonist, plus Poison Ivy, Commissioner Gordon, Batman and a whole menagerie of Arkham inmates.

LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES: MILLENNIUM CONNECTS A THOUSAND YEARS OF DC’S FUTURE TIMELINES What does LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES: MILLENNIUM mean for the future of the Legion—and the DC Universe? We talked to Brian Michael Bendis for more on the two-issue miniseries that spans a thousand years of DC future history. You’ve dropped Legion of Super-Heroes teases for months now. What should Legion fans know about MILLENNIUM? When I first came to DC and we were making our Superman plan, debuting the Legion and launching it in a huge way was a big, big, big reason for me to come over here. I got very excited about it, and on top of this major launch, we’re thinking, what we could do that would excite readers who knew all their stuff—and would engage readers who don’t know anything about the Legion, but would like to be part of it. We definitely wanted to do some kind of special event that leads up to it. Then I thought, wouldn’t it be interesting if there was a character that could literally take us from today, and walk us up to the Legion’s front door a thousand years from now? We started doing research and looking for characters that were already immortal, or had some kind of slow aging process. Then we thought, maybe there was someone who didn’t know this was part of their powers? Who would that be? Should it be a hero? Or a villain? Is there a character that’s kind of both? Who would walk us through? That’s when we focused on [REDACTED], who is a character I really, really like, who had been through a lot of mysterious, weird stuff in the DC Universe. We’re going to have her walk us through every single future in the DC Universe, and connect them all together. It tells us the story of all the DC futures, and it also tells us how the icons survived, and what they changed into, and why they’re so important to the Legion, and how the Legion will now reflect that back to us.
Also—there’s a character from the 21st century in the 31st century with a perspective that is different from everyone else’s. What made the Legion such a priority for you in coming to DC? It always, even as a reader, seemed like the most fun and the most challenging kind of story you could tell. It takes place in the future, where everything that we have in our lives has been abandoned for something else. All of these characters are reflecting a version of heroism that has been skewed through a thousand years, and they’re trying to live a life of heroism and passion and living up to the ideals of Superman in a way that we as a society are trying to do. It gives us an opportunity to tell amazingly passionate, beautiful, exciting stories in a world filled with imagination. How do each of the artists contributing to MILLENNIUM play a distinct role in the story? We started with Jim Lee. Jim was on board right away, and in his heart, would love to draw the Legion. This is something really near and dear to his heart. There are a few artists, like Andrea, who I have a history with, who have said, “Hey, if there’s a little something you want to do over there, I love what’s going on over there.” I went to Andrea and said, “Kamandi, but don’t do Kirby.” I’m a Kirby aficionado who thinks that Kirby didn’t want to be imitated, but to inspire. He went nuts, and it is gorgeous. We reached out to every single artist, and gave them either, “You tell us what your favorite DC history is,” or “I have something for you.” It was a mixture of both, and then we put it all together, and we made a big timeline, and we lined it all up.
