Our Lady of Victory
Wedding
Good food is major drawing card at Aug. 19-20 festival By ALAN FROMAN ThisWeek Community Newspapers
Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church will hold its 10th annual church festival Aug. 19-20. “It’s a very family-friendly festival, where people can come and have a good time with their families and neighbors,” said John Drake, who is co-chairing this year’s festival with Jesse Oddi. “Other churches have gambling and card games for the adults, but we de-emphasize that,” Drake said. “Our event is a fundraiser, it does raise funds, but the main idea is to provide a good family outing for people in our community,” he said. The festival will run from 5 to 11 p.m. Aug. 19 and 6 to 11 p.m. Aug. 20. “Food is probably one of the main things that draws people to our festival,” Drake said. “We serve really good festival food at good prices.”
A closer look The festival will run from 5 to 11 p.m. Aug. 19 and 6 to 11 p.m. Aug. 20.
The opening night will feature the annual fish fry, he said. “OLV is pretty well known for our fish fry,” Drake said. “On Saturday night we feature an Italian spaghetti dinner and Italian sausage baked by our pastor (Monsignor Romano Ciotola).” Other festival staples, including sandwiches, hot dogs, french fries, beer and wine, will be sold throughout the weekend, he said. Once again, Ciotola and his family will provide one of the most sought-after items in the silent auction held throughout the festival. “The Ciotola family owns a number of fine restaurants and you can bid on a chance to win a seven-course Italian dinner pre-
pared by the Ciotola family and served in our pastor’s home,” Drake said. Other items featured in the silent auction will include vacation packages, condominium stays and gift baskets, he said. Bids in the silent auction will be accepted until 9 p.m. Aug. 20. A number of games, including wheel games and others allowing participants to show off their talents and skills, will be featured at the festival, as will several rides for youngsters, Drake said. Live entertainment will also be offered both nights. About 300 volunteers are needed to operate each year’s festival, he said. “We’re always looking for volunteers. We can never have enough,” Drake said. “We have kids from age 9 on up helping out at the festival.” Anyone interested in volunteering should contact coordinator Nancy Tarini at 777-8156 or email at nst1957@gmail.com.

Have You Heard? by Greg VanHorssen A LOSING PROPOSITION FOR MEN New research showing that men taking the erectile-dysfunction (ED) drug sildenafil (Viagra) and similar drugs are at increased risk for hearing loss bolsters previous anecdotal accounts and laboratory work that arrives at a similar conclusion. While the new study does rely on self-reported hearing loss among men taking sildenafil, it is certainly worth noting that the new study reveals that taking ED drugs may double a man’s risk of developing hearing loss. The study also went on to show that, while other studies focused on sudden hearing loss, the hearing loss noted among the Viagra users may be more incremental in nature. Thus, some users of ED drugs may not notice any hearing loss associated with the medications right away. If you’re taking a medication for erectile dysfunction and have sudden loss of hearing or vision, seek medical help right away. If you or a family member are not hearing as well as you could, please call us today at 614-654-4309 to schedule a complementary hearing & speech evaluation.
