Furry Friends activities and Adoption Zone

If you are a pet lover, the Dispatch Fall Home & Garden Show will be celebrating pets all day on Saturday, and we will introduce you to some irresistible furry friends that we hope you will want to take home. Presented by The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center, our partners include Pilot Dogs, with a demonstration on stage Saturday at noon, and adoptable pets from the Franklin County Shelter Board, Columbus Humane and Colony Cats. Here is some more information about each of these groups, check schedule for times. Note: The adoption process can be started at the show, but you must pick up your animal from the shelter.

Pilot Dogs, Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides independence and mobility to the visually impaired. They provide independence through highly trained guide dogs that are trained at the Pilot Dogs campus
right in Columbus. These guide dogs, including transportation to and from our campus, and room and board for four weeks, are free to qualified visually impaired individuals. Pilot Dogs has provided this service to the visually impaired community since 1950 and have recently expanded its campus to include a veterinarian hospital and a state-of-the-art kennel all on one campus. Franklin County Dog Shelter’s mission is to enforce the dog laws in Franklin County and keep the public safe from animal-related health or safety dangers. The organization responds
to service requests, investigates complaints about nuisance, dangerous and vicious dogs, investigates dog bites, impound stray and dangerous dogs, files criminal charges, makes court appearances, and assists the police in crimes involving dogs, injuries caused by dogs and livestock attacks. In addition, it provides compassionate care for impounded animals at the shelter, as well as adoption and lost dog services to the community, as well as educating the public and teach dog owners to be more responsible citizens. Columbus Humane is not just a shelter. It has been advancing animal welfare since 1883. Its mission is to fight animal cruelty, help animals in need and advocate for their well-being. The organization’s unparalleled knowledge and compassion for animals, as well as its quality of care, sets it apart. ever home. Columbus Humane stands for maximizing the quality of life of a pet and enhancing the lives of pet owners. The board, staff and volunteers are passionate about the mission and about the animals in their care. Colony Cats is an all-volunteer organization whose primary mission is to address cat overpopulation in central Ohio through public awareness and spay/neuter efforts. Since 2002, the organization has facilitated spay/ neuter of nearly 15,500 cats and dogs, and placed more than 12,000 pets in homes. It has a cage-free cat adoption center in the Dublin area as well as a partnership with 13 pet supply stores that showcase adoptable cats throughout central Ohio and a network of foster homes for friendly, adoptable cats, kittens, dogs and puppies.
