County grew by 58.4%, census says Continued from page A1 with populations exceeding 100,000. The 2010 national mail rate was 74 percent and the 2010 Ohio mail rate was 78 percent. Kaitsa said the county worked with community partners — including the cities of Powell and Delaware and church groups — to promote the census. “I think that helped a lot,” he said. The county also targeted areas that previously had a low response rate. Also at the commissioners’ meeting: • Kaitsa thanked Stacie Hines, United Way campaign coordinator, for helping the county raise a total of $13,182 for United Way of Delaware County. Employees pledged or donated $11,492 and the

county raised $1,690 from holding events. The sheriff’s office held a number of events to raise money. Kaitsa said the county participates yearly in the United Way campaign. • Kaitsa presented fiscal services administrator Jane Tinker with a certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting for the fiscal year ending in 2009. The Government Finance Officers Association of the U.S. and Canada has presented the certificate since 1992 to government units and public employee retirement systems whose annual financial reports achieve high standards. Kaitsa said the county has received the certificate for 18 consecutive years. The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association that serves about 17,500 government finance professionals.

ACE HARDWARE STORE Continued from page A1 Dwyer said the building, which has an 80-foot-long front porch, looks wonderful. “It just has a very country feel to it,” he said. “It’s high visibility; it’s easy access,” Dwyer said of the location. Dwyer plans to hire about half a dozen employees. “We’re looking forward to being part of the business community,” he said.

Dwyer said that in addition to looking for something to do together, he and his wife wanted “to fill the need.” “We felt that the community needed a hardware store,” Dwyer said. Most people have to drive to Home Depot for supplies, which is a little over seven miles from downtown, Dwyer said. Fling Hardware was on the northwest corner of the square in downtown Sunbury and closed

about three years ago, village administrator Dave Martin said. “For a long time it was a very popular place,” he said. When Kroger opened on state routes 3 and 37 in 2008, however, people started leaving town to buy groceries. “That had a negative effect on places like Fling Hardware,” Martin said. Martin said many people are happy that a hardware store will open again in town.
