his work ethic.” McCurdy finished 36-11 overall with a program record 27 pins after going 1-2 at district to accumulate four points for the Pacers, who finished 42nd of the 44 teams that scored. Olentangy Liberty (128.5) won. Delaware’s last state qualifier was Kevin Rieman in 2004. “Seth is doing all the right things to get (to state),” Heffernan said. “I know that no one wants him to get to state more than he wants himself to be there. It just killed him that he didn’t make it this year. He doesn’t need to make giant leaps to get there. He had a very tough district bracket and wasn’t the only (state-caliber) wrestler not to make it. Lancaster had an unbeaten wrestler (Logan Strope) who didn’t make it out of that district.” McCurdy was first-team allOCC-Capital, and Giannakos and Daugherty were on the second team. Making the fourth team were sophomore Wyatt Davis (112/119) and freshmen Andrew Sierawski (171) and Raymond Simpson (152). Delaware finished 1-6 (seventh) in the league standings behind champion Mount Vernon (70), Hilliard Bradley (6-1), New Albany (5-2), Olentangy Orange (4-3), Watkins Memorial (3-4) and Big Walnut (2-5) and ahead of Franklin Heights (0-7). Sierawski finished 16-18, Simpson went 11-21 and Davis was 916. “I’m very proud of the gains of our freshmen, especially Sierawski, Simpson, Derrick Sumner and Shawn Johnson,” Heffernan said. “In order for us to compete as a team, we needed those guys to step up and they did. We had three freshmen with 10 wins. I’m also very proud of (junior) Andrew Nesselroad, who is in only his second year in the sport.” Sumner was 10-22 and Nesselroad finished 13-24. Others expected back are juniors Joel Calfe, Toby Cook, Colton Christner and Zack Sumner, sophomores Skyler Helmeci and Tyler Mattox and freshmen Cody Barker, Nick Beyer, Paul Claymier, Wes Dunlap, Tyler Harris, Reece Kotaka and Troy Shaw.
Alex Grant, Ivana Mostofi and Allison Smiley. The Pacers were third (121.6) in the OCC-Central Division meet Feb. 12 at Kilbourne, behind champion Kilbourne (134.975) and Olentangy Liberty (128.775) and ahead of Dublin Scioto (109.625), Hilliard Davidson (108.125) and Westland (70.5). Kern (sixth, 32.075),Yannacey (seventh, 32.050) and Clark (13th, 27.8) led Delaware in the allaround. Yannacey was runner-up on floor (9.0) and sixth on both vault (8.25) and bars (7.85). Kern was fourth on bars (8.075), eighth on floor (8.3) and ninth on both vault (8.05) and beam (7.65). Freshman Jennifer Foreman was sixth on floor (8.425). Delaware finished third (3-2) in the league standings, behind Kilbourne (5-0) and Liberty (41) and ahead of Davidson (2-3), Scioto (1-4) and Westland (0-5). Rounding out the roster were sophomore Megan McDonald and freshmen Ellen Cherup and Nikita Patel. •The wrestling team had three individuals finish with winning seasons and all three qualified for the Division I district tournament. Seniors Tyler Daugherty (215 pounds) and Mat Giannakos (125) and junior Seth McCurdy (119) all advanced from the sectional Feb. 19 at Marysville to the district Feb. 25-26 at Hilliard Darby. Daugherty finished 28-19 overall after going 0-2 at district. Giannakos went 30-18 after going 0-2 at district. Both had placed fourth at sectional, as the Pacers totaled 70.5 points to finish seventh in the 13-team field as Hilliard Davidson (239.5) won. The team’s other senior, Ben Williams (189), had his season cut short because of academic issues. He finished 12-15. “I’m very proud of all three seniors,” coach Josh Heffernan said. “They all will be missed. Mat’s season impressed me most of anyone on the team, after missing his entire junior season to injury. Just having him in our lineup every week was nice. But having him earn 30 wins and qualify for district, that wasn’t something we were counting on at the bemerine@thisweeknews.com end of last season. It’s a credit to www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com

is a special group of kids.” In the district final, sophomore forward Ethan Hollingsworth passed the puck to sophomore forward Marshall Oja, who scored 52 seconds into the second OT to secure the final four berth. “It’s all really overwhelming,” Hollingsworth said when asked about playing in front of a standing room-only crowd at the Ice Haus for the district final. “They gave us a lot of adrenaline and kept us pumped up from the beginning.” Ruska, an assistant captain, was wandering around the lobby of the Ice Haus with the district trophy clutched to his chest. Prying the award from him might not have been an easy task. “It’s amazing what we have accomplished as a group,” Ruska said. “We went from nothing ... nothing ... and were able to make it (to) the final four in four seasons. It’s really incredible, and it’s only the start.”
“The (district final) could have gone either way, and that showed because it went two overtimes.” The school has had only one other team reach a state semifinal since opening in the fall of 2003. The boys lacrosse team made it to the Division II state final in 2006, losing to North Canton Hoover 15-8. That occurred a year and a half before the hockey program’s first varsity season. Assistant coach Nick Kormanyos knows what it takes to be a championship team after qualifying for the NCAA tournament as a player at Niagara (N.Y.) University in 2003-04 by winning a College Hockey America conference title. He then played for the Fayetteville (N.C.) Fireantz when they won the Southern Professional League championship. “It takes a special group of kids to battle through a season of injuries and tough games to make shennen@thisweeknews.com it this far,” Kormanyos said. “This www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com
