Grove City Christian showed steady progress ThisWeek Community Newspapers

Although it got off to a slow start, the Grove City Christian School boys basketball team showed steady progress and was playing its best at the end of the season, first-year coach Chris Timlin said. The Eagles, who finished 6-16 overall and 2-8 in the MOCAL, won their Division IV district tournament opener 56-47 over Danville on Feb. 26 before losing to Newark Catholic 79-37 in the second round March 2. Against fourth-seeded Newark Catholic, sophomore Derek Vaughn led the Eagles with 11 points. Timlin said putting freshmen point guards Michael Howard and Tyler Elgin into the lineup hastened the team’s improvement.

“Had I been involved in the program much earlier and known the personnel better than I did back into June, Michael Howard and Tyler Elgin probably would have been up at the varsity level a lot sooner,” Timlin said. “They really helped us out a lot. Our turnover ratio was much lower when those two played at the end of the year.” Vaughn led the team in scoring at 12.7 points a game and was named second-team all-league and honorable mention all-district. “Derek is definitely a guy that will continue to develop and probably continue to add on to those individual numbers,” Timlin said. “He’s one of the very few guys that’s basketball only, so that means after our 30 days (the non-coaching period after the season) are up, we’ll be able to get in the weight room, out onto the track and

continue to develop his physical abilities, let alone his basketball abilities.” Senior forward Jonathan Clark, who was honorable mention all-league and district and led the team in rebounding at 7.7 a game, said Vaughn was a difference maker for the Eagles. “Derek really started to step it up a lot and we started to jell together as a team,” Clark said. “We just got together this year, and it was a good effort all around. We just started jelling and understanding the coach’s philosophy.”

Timlin must replace three seniors in Clark, Jayme Barns and Sam Hatfield. “They helped me with the transition,” Timlin said. “I was thankful to have all three of them. I wish I could have had those guys for a bit longer. All three of them have quite a bit of talent and have something to offer. It’s unfortunate that I won’t have an opportunity to work with them anymore, but I was grateful for the effort that they gave us this year and they’re very good kids.” Also expected back next season are juniors Casey Fisher, Alex Stewart, Ben Whitaker and Josh Zeller and freshman Ben Aulick. Whitaker, a guard, was honorable mention allleague. Grove City Christian finished fifth in the MOCAL behind Tree of Life (8-2), Fairfield Christian (7-3), Ga-

Last season I only had six weeks. This year I’m going to have 15 weeks of weightlifting, conditioning and skill-based things that I really am a believer can help develop these kids’ abilities.”
