WILDCATS Continued from page B1 That winner will play Fairborn or Liberty Township Lakota East in a regional semifinal on Tuesday, March 8, at Otterbein. The regional final will be held March 11 at Otterbein. Brookhaven beat Westerville South 4738 on Feb. 25 to improve to 15-5, as 6-foot1 senior post player Chanae’ Ward scored 16 points, 5-7 junior guard Jasmine Johnson scored 10 points and 5-8 senior guard Travecia Franklin scored nine points. Pickerington Central defeated fourthseeded Watterson 65-61 on Feb. 25 to improve to 12-10, as 5-5 senior guard Katie Stevens scored 20 points, 6-2 sophomore post player Marley Hill scored 11 points and 5-6 freshman guard Aajah Hawkins scored nine points. Taylor would like to see her squad continue to feature a balanced offensive attack. Leading Davidson in scoring through 22 contests were Long (9.7 points per game), Lauren Bates (9.1), Blackwell (6.7), Katie Dymek (6.5), Samantha Bradway (5.4), Ashley Hurt (3.8) and Ashley Weethee (3.4). “I definitely feel confident in everyone on this team that they can score if they’re open,” Taylor said. “But the biggest key is we need to play good defense and shut our opponents down.” •The boys team found itself in a familiar position heading into the fourth quarter of its Division I district opener against Olentangy Orange on Feb. 22 at Jonathan Alder. After being outscored 27-15 over the sec-

ond and third quarters, the Wildcats rallied from a 37-31 deficit to tie the 10th-seeded Pioneers at 43-all with less than a minute remaining. But Orange made five of six free throws in the final minute to earn a 50-45 win. “This was probably a fitting end to our season because it was reflective of how we usually played, whether we won or lost,” said coach Kevin Logsdon, whose squad finished 11-10 overall. “Our kids gave a great effort but we always seemed to have a stretch where we didn’t play well and dug ourselves a hole, and then had to fight back. We fought back and had a chance to win late in the game, but on this night, we were unable to cash in and win.” The Wildcats won 11 of their first 16 games, beating Olentangy Liberty 50-43 on Jan. 8 and Hilliard Darby 52-45 on Jan. 14 during that stretch. Junior guard Brandon Gleim scored 15 points and junior point guard Davonte Peterson scored 13 points against Darby. But Davidson lost its last five games, including back-to-back close losses to Darby (50-47 on Feb. 18) and Zanesville (60-51 on Feb. 19) to close out the regular season. The Wildcats finished fourth in the OCCCentral Division at 7-7, behind co-champions Dublin Coffman (13-1) and Upper Arlington (13-1) and Thomas Worthington (9-5), and ahead of Darby (5-9), Worthington Kilbourne (5-9), Central Crossing (2-12) and Westland (2-12). “We had a good year, with great kids who had good chemistry,” Logsdon said.

“We had some nice wins, but our lack of size and the dry spells we had really hurt us.” The Wildcats will lose senior guard Andrew Gronski, who started every game and averaged six points, as well as senior post player Kevin Stephenoff, who started nearly half of Davidson’s games and averaged one point. Players who started multiple games who are expected to return are Peterson, Gleim, junior wing player Chris Logsdon and junior guard Chris Martin. Peterson averaged 13 points and was firstteam all-league and honorable mention alldistrict. Logsdon averaged 9.8 points and was second-team all-league and honorable mention all-district. Martin averaged 3.8 points and was honorable mention all-league. Gleim and junior wing player Cole Lawson each averaged 6.9 points, and junior wing player Robert Snauwaert averaged 1.7 points. “We’ve got six kids coming back with experience, so it’s a matter of getting better and bringing in a little bit of size with some of the younger guys we bring up,” coach Logsdon said. “We have to boost our level of commitment in the offseason if we want to get to the next level. We’re not going to get better just because we have a bunch of guys coming back, because you know that UA, Coffman and Thomas are all going to work hard, too. We need to work hard on turning some of our weaknesses into strengths.” ablankenship@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com

Continued from page B1 The boys team finished sixth at the OCC-Central meet behind UA (388.5), Thomas (252), Coffman (162.5), Kilbourne (133) and Darby (123) and ahead of Central Crossing (55). Darby was fourth (82) and Davidson 10th (36) behind Upper Arlington (414) at the boys sectional, and the Panthers were 11th (70) and the Wildcats were 20th (19) behind champion UA (432.5) at district. “For swimming only one season, Gill made his mark by becoming an OCC champion (winning the 100 breast in 1:01.68),” Dickmann said. “His points and his experience will be missed.” •The Bradley girls team will lose Maddie McDonald to graduation and should return a lineup led by freshman Delaney Banda, sophomore Shea Driscoll and Goldsmith, who were all district qualifiers. “We’re all going to miss Maddie,” Dickmann said. “Her experience and her ability to pull people together will be missed on the team next year.” The boys team had only two members, and both Josh Guy and Jon Satre are expected to return. At the OCC-Capital meet on Jan. 29, the boys team finished seventh (42) behind New Albany (432), Delaware (285), Mount Vernon (166), Olentangy Orange (119), Watkins Memorial (74) and Big Walnut (60). The girls team took fifth (114) behind New Albany (343), Delaware (268), Orange (174) and Mount Vernon (155) and ahead of Big Walnut (112) and Watkins Memorial (98). In the Division II sectional at UA, the girls finished third of five teams with 296 points behind champion Wellington (296) and Grandview (255), while the boys finished sixth (37) behind champion Grandview (284). At district, the girls were ninth (82) behind champion Granville (368) and the boys tied AmandaClearcreek for 25th (23) behind champion Granville (256.5). •Darby, which didn’t have any swimmers advance to state, set several team records this season. The 400 free relay of Sam Dignan, Cory McLaughlin, Hunter

Cook and Alex Bean broke a 13year-old record by finishing in 3:23.93 at district. Also setting records at district were Cook in the 200 free (1:47.16) and the 500 free (4:44.41), Bean in the 50 free (22.35) and the 200 medley relay of McLaughlin, Cook, Dignan and Bean (1:45.06). Darby will lose Bean, Dignan, Grant Koscik and Robert Martin from the boys team and Alex Caruthers and Ashley Street from the girls team. “Sam, Alex Bean and Alex Caruthers are all four-year letterwinners and are some of the best swimmers we’ve had come through here,” Dickmann said. “It’s difficult to replace four-year letterwinners.” pbatterson@thisweeknews.com www.ThisWeekSPORTS.com
