Seedling Onions Need a Hero When onion seed and seedcorn maggots threaten young crops, s our heroes come prepared. FarMore FI-500 and Sepresto seed treatments provide early season disease and insect protection for young onion crops. Seed Dynamics applies the protectant to the seeds themselves, through a safe and controlled delivery. It works at the most critical time — during germination and seedling emergence — so your seeds can thrive, while fending off threats of early damage. Get a hero from Seed Dynamics, the Seed Preparation Professionals. Call us at 866.321.9747 or choose a dealer listed above.

STRIKE BACK AT SOIL BORNE DISEASE AND NEMATODES. The best way to manage soil borne pathogens in onions is before they become an issue. Strike soil fumigants are chloropicrin based and are used to manage soil borne diseases such as Phoma (pink root), Rhizoctonia, Fusarium, Pythium and pathogens such as nematodes. No other products are as effective in managing Pink Root as Strike. When targeting soil borne disease and nematodes Strike formulations with Telone II can be applied in a single pass. This reduces application costs and shortens plant back intervals. Strike promotes vigorous root growth and improves soil health.

Hazera California Open Days

Hazera Highlights New Hybrids Photos courtesy Limor Golan and Jose Arias, Hazera

H

azera’s first vegetable field days in Woodland, California, gave the industry a glimpse of the company’s onion portfolio and newest hybrids. During the event, held Aug. 1416, Hazera showcased its U.S. portfolio to its U.S. seed industry partners, as well as some major supermarket chains and retail suppliers. With peppers, tomatoes, melons and personal watermelons on display in the field, a tent housed an assortment of radish, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, broccoli and onions, ranging from short-day onions to long-day onions. Hazera representatives guided field day attendees through the trials and provided information about each variety’s characteristics and its benefits for growers, retailers and consumers. In the process, Hazera received feedback from its partners on the crops and insights about emerging markets, which is valuable information to the company’s research and development department. Although Hazera’s short-day onions were harvested a few months prior to the

event, the company was able to show off the onions’ quality. Company reps highlighted one of the newest hybrids, 10255, which most likely will be named Joelino. The productive main-season yellow short-day onion has proven itself over several years in California’s Imperial Valley and other areas of the U.S., according to Ben de Nijs, Hazera’s product manager of onions. “This variety, which has strong skins and the ability to produce very firm bulbs, is still in its test phase. But in the coming year, we have many trials planned, and we’re expecting this variety to become a strong addition to our portfolio,” de Nijs said. Hazera’s portfolio of red onions includes both short-day and intermediate-day varieties. Among the red onions Hazera displayed were the early short-day onion Miss Scarlett and the intermediate-day onion Red Sea. Both have established themselves in several red onion markets in the U.S. and Mexico. Another of Hazera’s new varieties in the test phase, hybrid

Crookham Company Long-Day Onion Show

Long History, New Long-Days Story and photos by Dave Alexander, Publisher

S

ince 1911, Crookham Company has been producing commercial seeds. To put that into perspective, the fourthgeneration, family-owned company was established the same year as American icon Chevrolet. The RMS Titanic was launched, a year prior to her fateful maiden voyage. In 1911, onions wholesaled for 65 cents a 100-pound bag. Current CEO George Crookham’s great-great-grandfather started selling popcorn seed in Idaho’s Treasure Valley that year to meet the country’s demand for its favorite munchie. Popcorn was the snack food of the day, sold on street corners and in ballparks. How has Crookham Company survived two world wars, the Great Depression and numerous economic downturns and recessions? In addition to the company’s reputation for expertise, integrity and maintaining good customer relationships, innovation has been key to its longevity. One hundred seven years later, Crookham continues to innovate. Innovation does come at a cost, however. Over the last 20 years, the company has invested tens of millions of dollars in research and in new variety development. The Crookham team is most excited about a new long-day onion variety that will be available soon. During the Crookham Long-Day Onion Show in August, George Crookham said he’s nicknamed variety 162 “bulletproof,” and it has been aptly named “Caliber.” The cultivar does everything exceptionally, he says. Pink root tolerance is fabulous, tops are green and erect, it has single centers, the variety handles thrips well, it has a good shape with a hard globe, and it stores extremely well. “When everything else was sprouting like crazy in storage, it hardly had any sprouts,” Crookham said. “As breeders, we make sure we test storage in less than ideal conditions. We want to see what does well and what doesn’t.” Caliber has been grown in strip trials and may be in a few acres next spring. It is ideally suited for the Treasure Valley, Washington and California.

A few clouds could not dampen George Crookham’s enthusiasm for new variety Caliber, which he has nicknamed “bulletproof.”

Another new Crookham variety is 105, named Caldwell. It also does well in the Treasure Valley, California and the Pacific Northwest and features a beautiful globe and high-yield potential. The variety is generating great interest from growers, and there will likely be hundreds of acres grown next year. It is described as very healthy with erect tops, great shape and good pink root resistance. Crookham Company breeder Dave Whitwood selected this variety as one that will ring well. New variety 189, Trident, will do well in the Pacific Northwest, Midwest and Northeast. Referring to its regional flexibility, Crookham said this onion is a “switch-hitter, which is not common to the onion world.” Like Caliber and Caldwell, this variety also has erect tops. Crookham said this common trait is what they have been selecting for because plants are healthier and it is easier to control thrips. Trident has a thin neck to help combat bacterial rot and a hard green scale to store well. Crookham cautions that until seed is “in the bag,” they won’t know if the new varieties will be widely available next spring. The company just doesn’t know how much seed it will have after drying, thrashing and conditioning. These varieties are coming, though, and growers will benefit when they do, he said. Not a lot of companies or brands still exist that are selling the same products since 1911 like Chevrolet and Crookham are. Chevrolet’s sister-brand Oldsmobile is older, but defunct. Another Chevrolet sister, Pontiac, isn’t as old and also gone. Not only do companies have to innovate to survive, but they have to remain relevant to their customers, adapting to change to give customers what they want. Chevrolet has done it. So has Crookham Company.

The Crookham Long-Day Onion Show also featured some short- and intermediate-day varieties, displayed by breeder Filippo Rimi.

Scotts has added programmable memory roller settings to the latest version of the machine, which is used to separate clods, stones, stems and loose dirt from a wide range of products including onions. The ability to store and then remotely adjust the spacing of the spiral and clod rollers to saved positions enables users to quickly and easily set up the Evolution Table to suit either the conditions or the crop being handled, according to the company. The latest version also includes a self-cleaning feature. When activated, the Evolution’s spiral rollers spin at high speed to throw off any attached dirt. Visit www.harriston-mayo.com.

Simon Says Soil Steamer Increases Efficiency

Simon is stepping up marketing efforts for its new range of soil steam disinfection machines. The company is recommending its Steam’R line for use in any crop, including onions, especially in organic production. The Steam’R machine is described as being equipped with the latest generation boilers, combining thermal performance with high efficiency. This is due to the use of superheated steam, which optimizes transport of the steam to the steam plates without resulting in excessive fuel consumption, according to the manufacturer. The design of the steam plates is said to ensure optimal distribution of steam across the entire surface and depth of the area to be treated. The Steam’R has a small turning radius. It also stops automatically when the job is done or when a problem is detected. Visit www.machines-simon.com.

WSU Onion Field Day

Thrips: Losing Control Story and photos by Denise Keller, Editor

T

he Columbia Basin onion industry may eventually be in search of a new go-to product for thrips control. Overuse of some of the most popular insecticides is leading to resistance in thrips, making control of the pest increasingly difficult. Researchers at Washington State University (WSU) are working to quantify insecticide resistance in onion thrips populations in Washington state and shared data during the 2018 WSU Onion Field Day, held Aug. 30 at Hartley Farms near Prosser, Washington. Adekunle Adesanya, a graduate student with WSU’s department of entomology, is in the first year of a project evaluating insecticide resistance in onion thrips. His study aims to determine which chemicals are effectively controlling thrips and to quantify the level of resistance to

32

chemicals that are no longer getting the job done. Specifically, he is looking at carbamates. This class of insecticides includes carbamate methomyl, such as Lannate, and carbamate oxamyl, such as Vydate. Both chemicals have been used for thrips control in onion fields for more than 25 years. Adesanya reported on methomyl resistance at the field day and will share the details of the oxamyl portion of the trial later. This summer, Adesanya sampled thrips populations in five commercial onion fields in Central Washington; sites included one organic field and four conventional fields. Thrips were exposed to varying doses of methomyl and oxamyl. Adesanya then compared the mortality rate of thrips from the organic field to that of thrips in conventional fields. His thought was that thrips collected from the organic field would be more susceptible to the chemicals than thrips from conventional fields. As he expected, Adesanya found that exposure to the field rate of methomyl resulted in 100 percent mortality of the thrips collected from the organic onion field. In contrast, only 50 to 60 percent of the thrips collected from conventional fields died. The reduction in the efficacy of methomyl on thrips populations in conventional onion fields relative to organic fields indicates that use of the insecticide over time has resulted in fieldevolved resistance, according to Adesanya. “If the thrips are really resistant to this particular insecticide, it doesn’t make sense to continue to spray this product,” Adesanya said. “Farmers need to start looking at other types of chemicals.” To prevent further resistance from developing, Adesanya reminded field day attendees to use products with different modes of action, pointing out that Lannate and Vydate are similar in their mode of action and target site. He also urged growers to skip insecticide applications if thrips populations are not at a damaging level.

“If you keep doing the same thing over and over again, we might create this super resistant population of thrips. They have resistance to almost anything you try,” he cautioned. Adesanya plans to test the thrips collected in this summer’s trial for the prevalence of the super knockdown resistance gene that was determined to be universal among thrips populations in Washington state in 2008. This gene was associated with resistance to pyrethroids, notably lambda-cyhalothrin, the active ingredient in products such as Warrior. Onion growers stopped applying this chemical because it became completely ineffective at controlling thrips, Adesanya reported. “Thrips are a grower’s worst nightmare,” he concluded. “They can cause as much as a 35 percent reduction in onion yield and can reduce the quality of onions if not controlled. They’re a double whammy because they can also transmit Iris yellow spot virus, which can further reduce onion yield and quality. Now, the development of insecticides resistance is more or less a triple whammy because the thrips can do more damage, transmit more disease and also increase the cost of farming.” The next step is to identify the source of resistance in thrips. Knowing this information would help in the development of a molecular diagnostic test for growers to use before spraying as a means of selecting an insecticide to which particular thrips will be susceptible, Adesanya explained. The research is being funded by the Columbia Basin Onion Research Committee and the Washington State Commission on Pesticide Registration.

Will Harris and Eric Williamson with Seminis check the bulb firmness of a numbered variety grown in the trial.

Reitz Replaces Shock Story and photo by Dave Alexander, Publisher

I

t is not easy to replace a Hall of Famer. Who replaced Magic Johnson? Who replaced Mickey Mantle? We don’t know, either. What we do know is, starting Nov. 1, Stuart Reitz will be the new director of the Oregon State University Malheur Experiment Station. He hopes to have the type of Hall of Fame success his predecessor, Clint Shock, had in his 34 years as director.

In addition to being a member of the Treasure Valley Onion Hall of Fame, Shock also has a Distinguished Service Award from the National Onion Association. His accomplishments as director of the station are innumerable, varied and impressive. From drip irrigation to fertilizers to proving that E. coli is not a risk in onions, Shock’s research has made a positive contribution to the onion industry. Reitz has big shoes to fill, but Shock will still be around at times, helping out and

consulting. Shock’s wife, Candace, says she hopes the time he spends at the station will be more part-time than full, but she isn't convinced. Shock has enjoyed his job. As for Reitz, he is looking forward to the challenge of replacing a legend. He has been at the extension center working as a researcher for years and has the experience and expertise to do the job. Get to know Stuart Reitz in the article below and on TheOnionPodcast.com.

Five Minutes With…

Stuart Reitz, Oregon State University Malheur Experiment Station Director

D

uring the Malheur Experiment Station Onion Variety Day, we talked with Stuart Reitz, the new director of the Malheur Experiment Station. When do you start your new job? I’ll be starting here Nov. 1 as the director of the station. What’s your current job? Currently, I’m working in the Malheur County Extension office, also here in Ontario, Oregon, and just provide information to growers or other members of the public on whatever pest problems or other concerns they have. And I also conduct research trials out here at the experiment station. Your new job will be replacing Clint Shock. Is it more of an administrative type of job?

Well, it has both administration and research components to it. Clint has been the director here for 34 years. For those of you who know Clint, I don’t know if you can actually replace him. But, yes, I’ll be stepping into the director’s position, which again has that administration role, but will also be doing a number of research trials at the station. You have a degree in entomology? I do. I got my Ph.D. in entomology at Clemson University. What do you see coming down the pike that’s going to affect the onion industry? Just in terms of insect management, the Treasure Valley is sort of a hot spot for thrips and Iris yellow spot virus, so we’ll continue looking at ways to manage thrips and manage the virus that they transmit. We’ll be doing some of the

same insecticide type trials that I’ve been conducting here over the last six years and Lynn Jensen did before me. And we’ll be adding in some other things to try and bring a more integrated approach to thrips management. What do you know about the allium leafminer right now? So, it’s a big concern and it has shown up in the Northeast in Pennsylvania, and I believe we’ve also seen it in New York and New Jersey, as well. So it’s definitely a concern. We do have another type of leafminer that we will see here in the western U.S. that mines through the leaves. One of the big concerns with the allium leafminer is that it not only mines through the leaf, but it gets down into the bulb itself, so it has potential direct losses and reductions in quality if they’re there. So the more we can do to try and keep

it out – as Oregon is making efforts to do – and to regulate shipments of onions and make sure that they are free of the leafminer before they come in to the state, the better. The best way to solve a problem is not to have it in the first place. So if we can prevent its entry into the Northwest, that would just be that much better for the entire industry. Is there a plan in place to do that, to keep East Coast onions on the East Coast or anything like that? I haven’t seen anything specific about trying to monitor or inspect shipments or anything like that. The Oregon Department of Agriculture’s perspective is they would like to have the ability to avoid the introduction if it came to that. What advice do you have for current producers right now? Do you have any tips you can give them? Oh, I think there are all kinds of tips. There are a number of very experienced growers out there. Here in the Treasure Valley, we’re seeing more and more production shift over to drip irrigation. We definitely encourage growers to get up to speed on the differences between furrow irrigation and drip irrigation. One of the big things is to not let your onions get stressed. Irrigate them adequately, don’t underirrigate them, don’t over-irrigate them – the traditional “Goldilocks” syndrome. We definitely encourage growers to do as much scouting for thrips as they can. We see large thrips populations here. But it’s important for growers to see when they need to make insecticide applications and then to follow up and see how effective those applications were. And just try and develop their management program for their particular situation and see either what insecticides worked well or how to time those applications. Let’s shift focus a little bit and talk about you a little bit. Tell us something about yourself that people might find surprising. So I always ask people if they can figure out where I grew up based on my accent. And hardly anybody ever guesses that I grew up in the Deep South. My family is from New Orleans, and when I was a kid, we moved up and down the Gulf Coast, and I spent a number of my formative years through high school and all in Alabama. I grew up in Mobile.

I would say you definitely do not have an Alabama accent. I tell people I’m from L.A., which actually stands for lower Alabama When you were growing up, what did you want to be? I was a big fan of “Wild Kingdom” and Marlin Perkins. So I had dreams as a kid. Mutual of Omaha? Mutual of Omaha. Capturing lions on the Serengeti or things like that. I went to grad school and started studying birds and bird migration patterns, then I continued on for a Ph.D. just looking at smaller things with wings, so I got interested in entomology and have been involved in that ever since. So what do you like to do? What’s on your bucket list? My bucket list… I like to travel, go see new places and do new things. I enjoy being here in the Northwest because in the winter time I get a chance to go skiing, and that’s always fun. Downhill or cross-country? I actually like cross-country skiing a whole lot. You get the fun of going downhill plus the fun of going uphill.

What is the most important innovation that you have witnessed in your lifetime? This can be agriculture-related or just in general. I think most people today would probably say their cell phone. They are amazing devices, you know, you carry around a computer. If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you want to be the lead? Oh, well, I was always a fan of Robert Redford, so I would take him. Do you want to add anything more to our discussion today about the industry or about yourself or maybe how people can contact you? They can Google me on the internet if they don’t know how to get in touch with me. But, my email and my cell phone number aren’t changing, so if you have my contact information, you can get a hold of me. But I’ll be here at the Malheur Experiment Station, and folks are always welcome to come by and see what’s going on out here at the station. And if they have questions about onions or anything else, they’re always welcome to get in touch with me. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll definitely try and help track them it down for them. Promoting Onions Helps Grow Consumption

By René Hardwick, National Onion Association Director of Public and Industry Relations

merican farmers are doing a bang-up job. More Americans are eating double and triple their body weights in veggies, and there are some solid numbers to prove it. According to a report from the USDA, Americans have beefed up their vegetable consumption 11 percent since 1982 to a whopping 400 pounds per person per year. Broccoli growers can be especially proud, as their consumption took off at 7.1 pounds per person per year — an almost fourfold increase in 35 years. Bell peppers, too, have enjoyed the fruits of increased consumption, growing to 11.39 pounds per person per year, a 279 percent increase in that timespan. Not to be outdone, American onions have seen some staggering numbers and easily top the heap of the major fresh vegetables consumed each year among tomatoes, potatoes, carrots and lettuce. Last year, onion consumption grew to 21.9 pounds per person per year; that’s a 79.5 percent increase in 35 years. According to the USDA’s Vegetables and Pulses Yearbook, in that time, tomatoes and cauliflower each grew 67 percent, sweet potatoes grew 45 percent, corn grew 25 percent, carrots grew 10.6

percent, celery grew 4.6 percent, and lettuce grew 3.6 percent. U.S. annual per capita onion consumption rose more in 2017 than it had in the previous eight years. Consumption also grew more in that time period than all but one other fresh vegetable the USDA tracks: cauliflower, which is riding the wave of the low-carb diet plans that are so popular now. (Have you tried a cauliflower pizza crust yet?) According to the USDA’s numbers for 2017, the latest figures available, onion consumption grew 15 percent from 2016 to 2017. Onion consumption growth just happens to coincide with the National Onion Association’s (NOA) three-decadelong concentration on promoting onion consumption. The NOA promotions program gained strong approval by the membership and began in 1982. That year, Americans ate, on average, 12.2 pounds of onions per person. From 1972 to 1982, when there were no regular onion promotions, consumption grew at a healthy 14 percent. The next decade, however, onion consumption grew 32 percent to 16.1 pounds per person and another 20 percent to 19.3 pounds per person by 2002. Fast forward another 10 years, and onion consumption was still on the upward trend, though it had begun to flatten, finally

pushing higher in the last decade to where it is today. We can’t help but think our push to promote onions has contributed to that upward trend. The promotions program is a voluntary one in which our members help fund our public relations and publicity efforts, such as getting onion-based recipes in magazines and newspapers, promoting consumption through a growing cadre of supermarket dietitians and helping them promote onions to their consumers. While the traditional avenues such as these still matter, this world is changing, and we have to change with it. We have to turn much of our attention to social media. That means being up to date on social media and spending more time and money there to jockey for the attention of an increasingly distracted consumer. We’re producing videos about onions, promoting onion recipes and health benefits. We provide eye-catching photos, videos and abundant information to consumers, chefs and industry folks. We are simply a one-stop-shop for onion information and publicity. Here’s the hard part. Every bit of that is funded outside of our regular membership dues, which means our members who invest in this worthwhile program must dig a little deeper. And we are grateful they understand the importance. Some may say onions have been among the top vegetables consumed for years, and that will not change. But it might. If we lay low and stop promoting onions, some other commodity’s voice won’t be so quiet. If all commodities are tooting their horns (as they should), and onions aren’t, it’s almost a sure bet that onion consumption will start shrinking. And to add one more cliché to the pile I’ve dropped here this month, a rising tide lifts all boats. Together, we as an industry can continue this impressive growth.
