Van McLaurin McAlister Dies at Age 74 Van McLaurin McAlister, 74, beloved husband of Addie Crolley McAlister, died peacefully at home Wednesday, April 10, 2013, after a brief illness, leaving behind a loving family, good friends and a legacy of service.

B

orn in Lake City, SC, Van was the oldest son born to the late Jaseph Theodore (J.T.) and Annie Lee Langley McAlister. He was a graduate of Columbia’s Dreher High School, where he was a star athlete and a member of the Dark Horseman. He attended Wofford College and the University of South Carolina, where he majored in business and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. A Columbia builder and developer for more than 60 years, Van began his career with McAlister Builders prior to serving as President of VIP Developers. He was a leader in the real estate, construction and development arenas in South Carolina. He served as President of the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia and the HBAGC Board of Directors. He received

the Gordon A. Harrison Award for integrity and ethics in the building business. He was honored as the National Industry Education Alliance Framing Partner of the Year for contributions to the apprenticeship program, which trains and mentors the next generation of builders. He was Builder of the Year, Builder Executive of the Year, a member of the South Carolina Building Codes Council and a member of the state and national Home Builders Association. He served as Chairman of the Codes and Inspections Committee of the Home Builders Association, and served as a VA, FHA, bank and warranty program inspector. He lobbied at the state and national levels on behalf of the building industry. His awardwinning firms were active participants in the annual Parade of Homes, dating back to the early 1960s.

volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and was voted Optimist of the Year. He was a member of the Ft. Jackson Lodge 374, was a member of the Scottish Rites and Jamil Shrine Temple. He loved an interesting book, fresh seafood, onion sausage, good jokes and baseball – in no particular order. A voracious reader, he read four or five books at a time and was intellectually curious about opinions both similar to and different from his own. He favored Abraham Lincoln, history and sports in general. Van was a good man, by anyone’s standards. He adored his wife, Addie, loved his children and doted on his grandchildren. And he was a loyal friend. He and Addie were married nearly 54 years, traveled the world together and enjoyed boating at their weekend home on Lake Murray.

Van was a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He was a

FIRE SPRINKLERS not included in 2012 Building Code

T

he Home Builders Association continues to work on the adoption of the 2012 International Residential Code (IRC). The implementation of the 2012 IRC could begin as early as July 2013. It is imperative that you understand that the adoption of 2012 IRC includes the modification to not require residential sprinklers. A delay in the adoption of the 2012 IRC could open the debate on sprinklers yet again.

IRC includes the modification to not require residential sprinklers. A delay in the adoption of the 2012 IRC could open the debate on sprinklers yet again. The process to approve the regulation (4321) to adopt the 2012 I-Codes started Wednesday, February 6th with the Senate Labor, Licensing and Regulation Committee (LCI). The committee is not authorized to amend a particular regulation. If a majority of a legislative committee determines that it cannot approve a regulation in the form submitted, it will notify the promulgating agency

(SC LLR) in writing along with its recommendations regarding the changes that would be necessary to obtain committee’s approval. Please note that one of the modifications to the 2012 IRC is the removal of the mandate for residential fire sprinklers. Thanks to our HBA of South Carolina Building Codes Committee and its Chairman, Andy Barber, the HBA was able to make several modifications to the 2012 I-Codes. 2012 IRC Workshop The HBA of Greater Columbia will sponsor a workshop on the significant changes from the 2006 IRC to the 2012 IRC on June 13, 2013. Check the HBA calendar www.columbiabuilders.com for additional information as details are confirmed.
