colston hall 150 Join us as we celebrate Colston Hall’s 150th anniversary and the amazing legacy of Bristol’s home of music. Colston Hall has been bringing exceptional musical experiences to Bristol since 1867. Legends like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Marley, Louis Armstrong, David Bowie and Ella Fitzgerald have graced the stage, as well as giants of the classical music world like Sergei Rachmaninov and Yehudi Menuhin. We mark this milestone with stand-out events throughout the

year, including DJ Yoda: A History of Gaming (p22) and Holy Holy: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders from Mars (p12). During September, we will be presenting a special programme of anniversary events. Keep an eye on our website and sign up to our regular enews for the latest announcements at www.colstonhall.org

Conducted by Howard Williams, “the UK’s premier symphony orchestra for children” (The Independent) return to Colston Hall for another “astonishingly mature” (Yorkshire Times) performance. The orchestra will perform the Suite from Kodály’s Hungarian folk opera Háry János, Ravel’s whirling La Valse and A London Symphony (Symphony No. 2) by Vaughan Williams. Concessions apply. Contact Box Office for details. You’ll know Caro Emerald as the Dutch “postWinehouse retro-jazz/soul vocalist” (Nottingham Post) whose debut album, Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor, spent more weeks in the album charts of her homeland than Michael Jackson’s Thriller. She returns to the UK with new songs and a new tour – and, of course, “that voice: rich and velvety smooth, enveloping the audience like a favourite blanket” (Manchester Evening News). “He’s back as his old self, with quiff, lugubrious baritone and youthful looks unfeasibly intact,” says The Guardian of the Stock Aitken Waterman phenomenon whose live show gives fans a chance to relive his medley of megahits (Whenever You Need Somebody, Never Gonna Give You Up, Together Forever), alongside entertaining covers and new material.

Following the long and bloody Trojan War, Ulysses returns to find his wife Penelope besieged by suitors. As the rivals enter a nail-biting contest, Ulysses must disguise himself and compete for her hand in this tale of fidelity and steadfast love. This opera was written as Monteverdi neared 70 – a period that would prove to be an Indian summer for the composer. Part of Monteverdi 450, celebrating 450 years since the birth of Monteverdi. l’orfeo: conducted by sir john eliot gardiner

Love’s young dream is cruelly thwarted when death separates the minstrel Orpheus and his new bride Eurydice. Spurred on by Hope, Orpheus is permitted to enter the Underworld to retrieve Eurydice on one condition – he must not steal a glance at her. Whether in the opera’s Arcadian sweetness and light, the showstopping virtuosity of Orpheus’ entreaty to the boatman Charon, or the unbearable pathos of his Act V lament, L’Orfeo unfolds a score – rich in colourful chorus work – that sears and delights. Part of Monteverdi 450, celebrating 450 years since the birth of Monteverdi. Book all three Monteverdi concerts and save 25%. Find out more at www.colstonhall.org
