Funk, Ibarra claim state championship hardware

BY JONATHAN MANESS SPECIAL TO COLORADO COMMUNITY MEDIA

DENVER – Legacy’s Quinn Funk and Skyview Academy’s Isaac Ibarra each won state titles in their respective weight classes.

Funk made quick work of Grandview’s Maxwell Kibbee in the class 5A 190-pound state match Feb. 18 at Ball Arena. He pinned Kibbee in the period.

“It has been amazing,” Funk said. “Just being able to wrestle here with all of my brothers here? It’s been really amazing.”

Funk (50-3) has four older brothers, three of whom lost in the finals at the tournament.

“They were just really proud of me,” the Legacy junior said.

Funk also beat topseeded Ponderosa’s Westin Hoffschneider in the semifinals 10-6 and also pinned Horizon’s Camden Neil in the opening round. He also pinned Fairview’s Sam Benton in the second round.

“I knew going in that if I wrestled all season. I could have come out on top,” Funk said.

Ibarra was just dominant in the class 3A 150-pound class. He beat Alamosa’s Kyler Liddell by major decision to claim the state title, capping an impressive senior season.

Ibarra (57-1) found little challenge throughout the tournament.

He pinned La Junta’s Santos Nunez in the opening round in 39 seconds, then pinned Pagosa Springs Chandler Mazur in 1:47 and Bennett’s Isaak Copeland in 5:45 to advance to the finals match.

“I had the mindset that I was going to dominate everybody,” Ibarra said. “I was nervous and excited to wrestle in front of all the fans.”

Ibarra didn’t realize the state championship was possible until he started to put work in at the beginning of the year.

“It started to become a reality after all the early mornings,” the senior said.
