AWARENESS
AAPI members and their heritage.
AAPI Heritage Month goes back to March 28, 1978, and a proclamation by President Jimmy Carter. The month of May was chosen in part because the first Japanese immigrants to the United States came on May 7, 1843. The Transcontinental Railroad’s completion, which relied on Asian labor, was on May 10, 1869, and also a factor. Find more information about the proclamation on WheatRidgeSpeaks.org.
The council also proclaimed the Municipal Clerk’s week, from April 30 to May 6. According to the proclamation, the municipal clerk is one of the oldest public servant positions. The proclamation aligns with the national celebration. The International Institute of Municipal Clerks has celebrated this week for 54 years.
A flurry of first reads and big project presentations

Two ordinances are making their way through the City Council, Ordinance 08-2023, about the dedication of certain public parks, and Ordinance 09-2023, which covers the transfer of land along Wadsworth to the Colorado Department of Transportation. The land transfer includes 65 proper- ties along Wadsworth, between 35th Street and Interstate 70. For more information, see WheatRidgeSpeaks.org.

The council also adopted the 44th Avenue Subarea Plan revitalization project. A presentation came after a year of collaboration, study, and input from Wheat Ridge businesses, organizations, and community members. The plan addresses the need for comprehensive strategies to promote revitalization and attract investment to the West 44th Avenue corridor and to enhance the adjacent neighborhoods, according to city documents. You can view the detailed presentation for the Plan on the What’s Up Wheat Ridge page.
