Council hesitates on CSM stadium project Planning commission to review new design plans presented to city council By Amy Woodward

awoodward@ourcoloradonews.com Plans to upgrade the Colorado School of Mines football stadium in addition to building a 54,000 square foot athletic center have been blocked after city council unanimously decided to remand the official development plan and rezoning request back to the city’s planning commission last week. The project, which has been in the works for the last six years, has received $20 million in donations and was approved by the State Legislature in 2012. Currently, the CSM athletics department is located in the Volk gym which was built in 1958 as an all-male facility designed to hold six coaches and 100 athletes. Today, CSM has 18 men and women varsity sports, over 500 student athletes

and 55 coaches. The proposed athletic center will make room for offices for 15 coaches, and include a weight room, meeting rooms, onsite treatment for sports injuries and classrooms which may be used for the school’s final exams. The football stadium known as Brooks Stadium is 91 years old, making it the oldest football stadium in the state. It seats 3,500 visitors but CSM hopes to add an additional 1,000 seats. On Nov. 6, the planning commission, with only four out of eight members present, denied CSM’s planning and rezoning request citing that the structure’s proposed height at 53 ft. was “incompatible” with the 12th St. Historic District neighborhood that lines the campuses’ east side. The commission also listed aesthetic concerns that didn’t match with the adjacent neighborhood along with parking and traffic concerns. The planning commission’s issue with CSM’s plans mirrors problems expressed from residents in the 12th St. Historic Dis-

None of the changes received support from residents present at the meeting and testimony in support of the project from CSM students fell on deaf ears with residents asking students to put “themselves in my shoes.” City council stated they were overwhelmed by the changes and had a lot of

questions, specifically about the use of the athletic center, stadium lighting and traffic within in the neighborhood. “This building is very appropriate, it’s just right and what we need to alleviate our issues,” said Kirsten Volpi, executive president for finance and administration. David Hansburg, athletics director at CSM, testified the school has lost recruits based on the condition of the football stadium. “Brooks stadium is not what these prospective student athletes want to see,” he said. “We really don’t want them to see Brooks, that’s kind of tough to live with.” The athletic fields where Brooks Stadium sits is not located in the historic neighborhood and property rights belong to CSM. However, CSM agreed to follow the city’s approval process for construction projects. “We are flat out of room,” Volpi said. “We don’t have an ability to have these facilities anywhere else on campus.” CSM will face the planning commission again on Jan. 8.
