FORT LUPTON – The Fort Lupton football team treated a packed homecoming crowd to an entertaining Friday night, one that left fi rst-year coach Joey O’Connor both happy and speechless.

The Bluedevils needed every second of the Sept. 17 contest to hold off a relentless Estes Park Bobcats team 39-38 in a showdown full of offense.

Quarterback William Alvarado connected with Anthony Blan-Mendenhall on a pair of touchdowns, and Blan-Mendenhall put the fi nal stamp on the game by intercepting a pass at Fort Lupton’s 6-yard line to seal the victory.

“(Our fans) have been so supportive of us. This win is for them,” Blan-Mendenhall said. “We haven’t been the best over the years, but they have been there for us. I love them.”

It was the fi rst victory for Fort Lupton (1-2 overall) this season and was a step in the right direction as O’Connor and the Bluedevils coaching staff work to change the culture for a team that has only won six games in seven years.

“It was an unbelievable environment,” O’Connor said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better homecoming. We are trying to change the culture, and this is a big step in going the right direction.”

If this game is a sign for the future, then O’Connor has FLHS heading to a bright future. He helped energize the fans, and the players followed suit on the fi eld.

With less than fi ve minutes to go, Alvarado and Blan-Mendenhall connected on a 23-yard pass to push Fort Lupton ahead 39-32. Estes Park answered with a touchdown of its own, but Fort Lupton’s defense held strong. Dimitri Alarcon stopped the runner short on the twopoint conversion.

“I’m just speechless,” O’Connor said. “The guys played their heart out, and I’m really proud of them.”

Fort Lupton took an early lead in the fi rst quarter behind the play of their junior quarterback. Alvarado raced into the end zone from 6 yards out to score the fi rst touchdown and then broke loose for an 80-yard run to give the Bluedevils a 14-12 advantage.

Fort Lupton began to take advantage of the Bobcats’ inability to kick the ball. The Bluedevils only allowed the Bobcats to convert on one of six of their 2-point conversions. Twice, Estes Park was stopped on fourth down – one of which was at its own 23-yard line.

Four plays later, Isaac Rodriguez added another touchdown and Fort Lupton faced a small 26-22 defi cit at the halftime.

Alvarado rushed for 204 yards in the contest and two touchdowns and added 137 yards by air and a pair of touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, Isaac Rodriguez and Antonio Gonzales stood out, while Kayden Derbigny,

Dimitri Alarcon and Kaidyn Taylor had sacks, and Taylor added an interception.

“The guys played with heart. Hopefully, this is a win we can build off,” O’Connor said.

Next up for Fort Lupton is a home non-league matchup with Elizabeth (7 p.m. Thursday, Sept 23) before the Bluedevils start league play.
