New principal at Second Creek

27J Schools announced the hiring of Ana Marlatt as the new principal for Second Creek Elementary School.

She had been an assistant principal at the school for the past two years. She’s been in the district since 2005 as a teacher and an instructional coach.

“This school is an incredible pace filled with amazing students, staff and so many supportive families standing with us,” she said in a statement. “The Second Creek community is truly amazing. I’m honored to be the next leader of Second Creek and am excited about what can accomplish together.”

Marlatt earned her bachelor’s degree at Regis University. She earned a master’s in curriculum and instruction at the University of Colorado. Her second master’s -- with an endorsement in educational leadership -- came from Regis University in 2015.

Overnight road work

Night work on the North Outfall Project closed the intersection of Seventh Avenue and Bridge Street through at least Sunday, June 27. Use alternate routes.

27J preschool

27J Schools will offer a tuitionbased preschool on a first-come, first-served basis in the fall. Children have to be at least age 4 by Oct. 1. The program is tentatively set to be available through Brantner Elementary School, 27J Bright Beginnings Preschool, Northeast Elementary School, Pennock Elementary School, Padilla Elementary school, Reunion Elementary School, Second Creek Elementary School, Thimmig Elementary School, Turnberry Elementary School and West Ridge Elementary School.

Morning preschool runs from 7:50 to 10:50 a.m. Afternoon preschool lasts from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Call 720-685-5490.

Flicks and Kicks

Brighton’s outdoor movie/concert program, Flix and Kicks, returns this summer at Carmichael Park, 650 E. Southern St.

Stars and Stripes

Adams County’s Stars and Stripes returns from its pandemic hiatus for Saturday, July 3 at Riverdale Regional Park, 9755 Henderson Road, Brighton. There will be a 5K race, a cornhole tournament, live entertainment and musical fireworks. See more at http://adamscountyfair.com/starsandstripes.

Fourth returns to Carmichael Park

Brighton’s Fourth of July festival will start at 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 4 at Carmichael Park, 650 E. Southern Street. Bands will perform for a few hours and food trucks will be parked nearby. There will be fireworks sometime after 7 p.m. The city encourages attendees to bring blankets, lawn chairs, sunscreen, bug repellent and drinking water.

Flag retirement ceremony

An American flag retirement ceremony starts at 6 p.m. Monday, July 5, at the Platte Valley Historical Society, 2001 Historic Parkway.

Drop off retired flags at the Ace Hardware on Rollie Avenue.

Blues Blast returns to Armory

The eighth annual Blues Blast returns to the Armory Performing Arts Center Saturday, July 10. The headliner is Ruthie Foster, winner of the Blues Foundation’s Koko Taylor AWard for top traditional blues female artist.

The schedule looks like this: * Noon to 1 p.m.: The Delta Sonics; * 1:30 to 2:45 p.m.: Eef and the Blues Express; and * 3:15 to 4:45 p.m.: Johnny O. Band

The ticketed portion of the event ($35 to $55) starts at 6 p.m. Doors open at 5. The lineup goes like this: * 6 to 6”45 p.m.: Cass Clayton Band; * 7:15 to 8:30 p.m.: Marquise Knox; and * 9 to 10:15 p.m.: Ruthie Foster

Before the Blues Blast, there will be a transportation art show in the gallery of the Armory, starting at 10 a.m. At the same time, there will be a classic car show in the parking lot. food trucks and a cash bar will be available.

City barbecue returns

Brighton City Council hosts its annual city barbecue from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 22, at Carmichael park, 650 E. Southern St. Part of the event includes the week’s Flix and Kicks series, featuring the 6 Million Dollar Band, featuring 180s dance hits.

Residents can meet council members, share questions and concerns and learn about new and ongoing projects. Residents should bring picnic blankets, lawn chairs, sunscreen, bug repellent and drinking water. Call 303-655-2146.
