Q&A We asked our team...
What is your favorite Holiday or New Years
tradition?
As someone from an inter-faith family, I love eating my fill of latkes during Hannukah. I also love that we always go and eat Chinese food on Christmas. And every Christmas, I meet up with my friend-family for a latenight movie. We have been doing that since high school.
Dana McGraw Paso Robles
My favorite holiday memory is spending hours in the kitchen with my mom, making her “secret” Peanut Butter Ball recipe, which she had been doing for many, many years! Funny thing, the recipe is no secret! Now, the tradition lives on with me and my kids!
Anthony Atkins Atascadero
Cami Martin Templeton
My favorite Holiday tradition is spending time with family and friends and driving around the neighborhoods to view Christmas lights while listening to Christmas music!
I might be among the few men who enjoy cooking a Thanksgiving feast. I always make my sweet potato pie by mixing it with goat cheese, and I top it with a bacon weave. That one always impresses.
Kaylie Carafelli Camarillo
Ellie Baisch
San Luis Obispo For as long as I can remember, my family and I go to my aunt’s house on Christmas Day. In our PJs, we eat Italian beef, play games, and watch a comedy!
16 | LivingLavishlyMag.com
I love decorating my Christmas tree. Every year, each member of my family chooses a new ornament to add to our collection. Since we are a family of foodies, we’ll be decking our tree with ornaments that represent our favorite foods this year.
Things We Love Q&A
Christie Redd Coyes San Luis Obispo
Growing up in San Luis Obispo, seeing the downtown Christmas decorations and the Downtown SLO Holiday Parade meant it was Christmas! Later on, I would enjoy the parade and Santa’s House with my own two kids. One year, my suggestion, “Joy to the World,” was chosen for the Downtown SLO Holiday Parade theme... I never miss the Downtown SLO Holiday Parade.
Camille DeVaul Paso Robles
Embracing my family’s Italian heritage is by far my favorite part of the holiday season. Our traditions are surrounded by the best food, my favorite being my great nonna’s Italian Wedding Soup.
Evan Rodda Neil Schumaker Paso Robles
One of my favorite holiday traditions has to be going to Christmas On Vine Street. It’s always a good time walking around looking at all the lights and drinking hot chocolate, if it’s not too cold or rainy. Fingers crossed!
Lukas Johnson Thousand Oaks
Christmas is my favorite holiday; the festive spirit, twinkling lights, and the joy of giving make this season truly magical for me. Our longtime tradition of decorating the Christmas tree on the eve of Christmas has created memories for me that I will cherish for my lifetime.
San Luis Obispo The holidays, for me, are all about spending as much time in my pajamas as possible. I will typically watch football on Thanksgiving and basketball on Christmas. Holiday movies are always a must. My family and I used to watch Christmas Vacation every year, and it would just completely crack us up ... in our matching pajamas.
Mike Chaldu Lompoc
We don’t do this anymore, but when I was a kid, me and my sister and/or friends would go out to see a movie on Christmas Eve. I think it was because the moms wanted have us out of the house to get stuff ready, but it was something we all looked forward to.
Jen Rodman Kaleb Rich-Harris Port Hueneme
My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving, with the tradition of “The Turkey Trot,” which is where you run a 5K with family and friends for the holiday before you enjoy a wonderful pastime of breaking bread with your loved ones. I love this holiday and tradition because it isn’t commercialized, and it gives a great excuse to exercise/eat a lot of food with family and friends.
Atascadero
My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. Fall weather, color changes, seasonal treats, and celebrating together with family to give thanks for the blessings we have.

Autumn/Winter 2023 | 19
How to Guide
Embrace Nature’s Soft Palette Transition your decor as the autumn leaves turn shades of red, orange, and gold, by bringing this beauty indoors. Blend in pumpkins of white and orange hues, complemented by throw pillows in warm earthy tones, snug blankets, and rustic table adornments. Think about featuring natural elements like pinecones, acorns, and dried leaves as your centerpieces. Introduce candles with earth-inspired fragrances, like cinnamon, apple, and vanilla, to forge a comforting and welcoming atmosphere. Adding these simple touches will summon the very essence of autumn within your home. 20 | LivingLavishlyMag.com
Twinkling Lights & Cozy Textures As winter approaches, create a cozy atmosphere with soft textures and ambient lighting. Layer your furniture with plush throws and faux fur pillows for added warmth. Incorporate twinkle lights, both indoors and outdoors, to infuse your home with a festive glow. Consider a snowy wreath on your front door and frosty window clings to welcome winter with open arms. Include evergreen trees with white lights to infuse your space with holiday cheer. Choose decor such as gold-trimmed vases or neutral ornaments that can seamlessly carry through from Thanksgiving to New Year’s. Autumn/Winter 2023 | 21
How to Guide
Wintertime Magic Elevate your decor with wintertime touches like a beautifully decorated tree, silver candleholders, and a mantle adorned with stockings. Consider plush throw pillows and soft, knitted blankets in dark greens, deep reds, or winter white casually strewn on sofas for an added sense of warmth. Add evergreen garlands and wreaths to create a woodland-inspired theme. Incorporate shimmering golden ornaments, snowflake-themed decorations, and a hint of sparkle in your table settings. And it’s not just about what meets the eye. Enhance the auditory experience by having gentle holiday music in the background, the melodies intertwining with the laughter and conversation, adding to the magic that fills the air. From corner to corner, let your home be a holistic winter wonderland, blending visual beauty with comforting scents and sounds, creating a haven where holiday memories are made and cherished. From Thanksgiving all the way to New Year’s, your space won’t just be decorated; it will epitomize the very spirit of the winter season.

esigned to engage the sweeping views of Downtown Paso Robles and the rolling vineyards surrounding the property, this 2,200-square foot, twobedroom, 2.5-bath modern home was constructed over the site of a previous mid-century home. The contemporary residence takes advantage of the topography of the site and hides a wine cellar and gym in the basement. The design honors mid-century design through its form while blending desert-modern colors and textures.

Timeless Elegance & Choice for Design Discover why wood reigns supreme in versatility, durability, and sustainability in modern interior design
R
ussia’s Shiqior Idol stands as a testament to the enduring power of wood, surpassing even the age of Stonehenge and reigning as the world’s oldest wooden sculpture, estimated at over 12,000 years old. Meanwhile, in Turkey, a wooden mausoleum honoring King Midas’ father has remained remarkably preserved for more than 3,000 years. Japan, too, boasts the world’s oldest wooden building, last rebuilt in 700 A.D. These remarkable examples underscore wood’s undeniable prominence as a cherished design material, sparking curiosity about whether it might indeed be the ultimate choice for design.

blocks, poster frames, wall paneling, Christmas ornaments, chandeliers, and serving trays, to name just a few.
Durability Wood demonstrates remarkable durability, thanks to its intrinsic natural properties. In its original form, wood withstands the rigors of the forest, and when incorporated into furniture, paneling, or decor, it retains its strength, flexibility, and resilience. It’s no surprise that wood is the favored material for constructing structures and embellishing various elements. Furthermore, the diversity of wood species allows for tailored applications. To preserve the wood’s beauty, regular dusting is essential to prevent particles from settling in crevices, and occasional oiling and waxing protect against atmospheric wear. Keeping wood away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations while maintaining proper indoor humidity ensures its long-lasting splendor.
Versatility Wood’s extraordinary versatility makes it an ideal accent. A concrete door cannot compare to the elegance and convenience of a sliding maple pocket door, and attempting to create a sauna from steel would be a perilous endeavor. Wood lends itself to an extensive array of design possibilities, encompassing walls, bookends, dressers, floors, end tables, coffee tables, hall trees, sconces, vault beams, cutting 30 | LivingLavishlyMag.com
Moreover, wood seamlessly complements diverse design aesthetics, whether adorning a Coastal bungalow with shiplap paneling or gracing a traditional Craftsman front porch with colonnades. Wood accents effortlessly fit into a farmhouse inspired by Joanna Gaines or enhance the character of a rustic cabin with wooden backsplashes and timeworn center islands. A rich chocolate walnut coffee table can seamlessly grace a modern apartment or pay homage to mid-century modern design.
Health Benefits Decorating with wood connects you to nature and promotes wellbeing. Time spent in wood-accented environments has been shown to have positive effects on mental and physical health.
Eco-Friendly Wood emerges as an eco-conscious choice. Not only is wood reusable, but it also actively contributes to a healthier planet. Trees, during their growth, absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, enhancing air quality. A single tree can absorb over 48 pounds of carbon dioxide annually and release oxygen. After being harvested, trees can be promptly replanted to regenerate what was harvested. In contrast, the production of cement accounts for 5 percent of global CO2 emissions, with steel and concrete collectively generating more greenhouse gas emissions than wood.
Timelessness Wood is timeless in design, enduring through the ages.
Sound Insulation Wood is an excellent choice for acoustic insulation. Whether you’re in a metal band or simply enjoy loud music, wood-paneled walls, folding wood dividers, or planked ceilings help mitigate noise. The chemical composition of timber, with lignin and cellulose, aids in sound absorption and acts as an acoustic insulator.
Energy Efficiency Wood’s cellular structure, containing air pockets, enables it to absorb and retain hot and cool air. Homes featuring wooden walls, ceilings, or paneling benefit from improved insulation, reducing the need for heating and cooling and leading to lower energy bills. Additionally, wood’s hygroscopic nature helps regulate indoor humidity, making it a practical choice for various climates. If you are now convinced that wood reigns supreme in the world of design accents, it’s time to consider the types of wood you’d like to incorporate into your home decor. Common options include oak, cherry, pine, beech, teak, alder, maple, walnut, poplar, birch, and mahogany. Lighter woods like oak and pine impart a gentle warmth to any space, while dark cherry or walnut exude timeless elegance or modern sleekness. Red-hued cedar, once reserved for sea chests and bridal trousseaus, now finds its place in contemporary minimalist designs, such as cedar kitchen stools. For a touch of the timeless tropics, consider waterproof bathroom cabinets or window frames made of rosewood. Those yearning for an authentic, organic feel can opt for a live-edge wood dining or coffee table. Teak, a highly durable wood, is an excellent choice for outdoor decor. So, the next time you contemplate adding a new side table, statue, or settee to your living space, consider opting for wood — undeniably the finest material for decorating.

utumn, the season of cozy warmth and crisp air, has arrived. Despite the perpetual sunshine we enjoy, there is an undeniable allure in embracing the rich and unique color palette of this season. The question arises: How can we tastefully decorate our spaces to capture the essence of autumn while maintaining an equilibrium between earthy vibes and a desire for coziness? The answer lies in mastering the art of blending serene colors with chic home decor accents, creating a harmonious and inviting atmosphere. As we embrace this autumn season, let us find inspiration in the exquisite landscape that envelops us. Contemplate the array of warm hues that grace the Pacific sunset. Our attention is drawn to earthy tones such as sandy beige, muted oranges, olive greens, and soothing teals. Begin by selecting a foundational color that resonates with your personal aesthetic—whether it's the creamy beige or the sumptuous richness of olive, let it set the tone for your autumn palette.

1. Opt for these hues as your wall color or as the primary shade in your furniture. Complement them with accents of the remaining colors to infuse depth and warmth into your design scheme. Be sure to explore various textures as well. Keeping the cool ambiance intact is effortless by integrating materials such as rattan, jute, and organic linen, which can introduce captivating tactile elements to your living area.

2. Shifting focus to decor accents, we gravitate towards pieces that imbue a cozy feeling and mirror the gentle shift of seasons. Candle holders radiating soft, golden light can add a touch of enchantment to your evenings. Choose candles infused with fragrances that epitomize autumn such as pumpkin spice, apple cinnamon, or rich vanilla to delightfully engage your senses.

Lastly, incorporating elements such as succulents and wildflowers, housed in appealing pottery or vintage vases that align with your color palette, can energize your rooms. The diverse shades of green establish a connection to the natural world, promoting a soothing and cozy environment. Personalize the space with beloved items that can seamlessly transition from one season to the next, or make an annual appearance, ensuring your space remains ever-fresh and uniquely yours. Through the harmonious combination of soothing hues and exquisite home decor accents, you can construct a sanctuary that honors our gentle autumn. Welcome the season by weaving these elements into your home, immersing yourself in the inviting, warm ambiance. Allow the season's comforting beauty to guide your interior design choices, permeating your living spaces with a sense of tranquility, warmth, and peace.

Illuminating Design The art of transforming spaces with interior lighting By Madeline Wright
T
he transformative power of light within an interior space is not just about brightening dark corners; it’s about crafting an atmosphere, enhancing functionality, and elevating aesthetic appeal. From the soft luminescence that sets the stage for a romantic dinner to the purposeful brilliance lighting up a cozy reading nook, the art of interior lighting extends beyond mere fixtures and bulbs. It’s a subtle dance between ambiance and design, an element that can redefine a room’s mood, create illusions, and shape our experiences within a space.

Achieving mastery in interior lighting design demands a blend of practicality and creativity. This process begins with recognizing the room's primary purpose. The serene retreat of a bedroom calls for gentle, calming shades of light, promoting relaxation. In contrast, a home office demands bright, direct light to fuel focus and productivity. But functionality doesn't preclude style; a decorative chandelier, for instance, can double as a source of ambient light and a dramatic focal point within a dining room. The secret to striking the perfect balance lies in layering various sources of light. Consider a living room: ambient lighting provides a base layer of illumination, a floor lamp positioned near a sofa might offer the necessary task lighting for reading, while accent lights can be used to spotlight art or architectural features, injecting drama and intensity. This combination addresses diverse needs while lending depth and complexity to the space. Moreover, the color temperature of lighting, measured in Kelvins (K), plays a pivotal role in setting the tone. Lights on the lower end of the scale (around 2,700K-3,000K) cast a warm, inviting glow suitable for spaces meant for unwinding, like bedrooms or living rooms. Those higher on the scale (3,500K-4,500K) emit a crisp, neutral light that enhances concentration and alertness, ideal for bathrooms and kitchens. Natural light, however, holds an invaluable place in lighting design. The integration of artificial lighting with natural light hinges on factors such as window placement, the sun's path, and the utilization of materials. Sheer curtains might be employed to soften incoming rays, while reflective surfaces can be strategically positioned to amplify light, ensuring a space is bathed in an optimal level of brightness with an organic touch. The ability to manipulate light levels is another critical aspect. The installation of dimmer switches not only allows for the adjustment of light intensity to suit various activities and moods but also contributes to energy conservation and prolongs bulb longevity. When it comes to the fixtures themselves, the aesthetic component becomes paramount. Whether modern, vintage, industrial, or minimalist, the fixture should resonate with the room's overall theme and décor, all the while fulfilling its lighting purpose. And with technological advances, LED lights stand out as a premier choice. They're a testament to sustainability, offering energy efficiency and durability without sacrificing brightness or visual appeal. In essence, interior lighting is an art form in its own right, capable of transforming spaces, evoking emotions, and enhancing life's moments, big or small. With thoughtful consideration of a room's function, the subtle employment of style, and a nuanced understanding of the sensory experience, any space can transition from simply being lit to radiantly luminous.

The
Silent Storytellers What our homes say about us By Elizabeth Hickcox
O
ur homes, nestled within the quiet confines of our walls, whisper secrets of our deepest selves. They are not mere structures of brick and mortar but vivid memoirs written in the unique language of home styling. They resonate with our choices, values, paths we have traveled, and even the dreams we harbor for days yet to dawn.
Delving deeper beyond the foyer, the home's layout and the spaces it prioritizes narrate the chapters of its dwellers' lives. An expansive, well-appointed kitchen hints at a penchant for culinary exploits and social gatherings, pointing to a convivial, family-centric persona. A conspicuous, overflowing bookshelf could indicate a voracious reader or an eternal student of life. The existence of a dedicated office or creative studio may signify a remote-working professional or an artist seeking a fertile cradle for their creativity. These functional spaces loudly proclaim our daily engagements, priorities, and fervors. 40 | LivingLavishlyMag.com

Upon entering, one is greeted by an atmosphere that serves as the opening paragraph to the story of our lives. Is it a realm of minimalist, immaculate order, or a sanctuary radiating warmth, filled with an array of eclectic finds? The stylistic choices, color schemes, and the presence or absence of decorative items are telling signposts to our inherent nature. A minimalist space often reflects a soul who values order, simplicity, and practicality over opulence. In contrast, a home drenched in varied textures, lively colors, and sentimental trinkets often shelters an individual who treasures experiences, comfort, and the rich tapestry of life's memories.
Home
Autumn/Winter 2023 | 41
Yet, it is the minor, frequently disregarded details that truly enrich our story, much like the understated literary devices a novelist employs to flesh out characters. The assortment of fridge magnets from distant lands, the ancestral vase, the thought-provoking piece of contemporary art, or the handcrafted quilt adorning the sofa — these nuances add layers, recounting our past, our bonds, our journeys, and the memories we hold dear. These personal artifacts disclose not only who we are but also our origins and, potentially, our destinations. However, each home also has its shadowed corners: the drawers, closets, or the cluttered room hastily masked from guest's eyes. These realms, in their raw authenticity, are perhaps the most revealing. They represent our shared human condition — the private facets of our existence, the segments that are less tidy, less prepared for the world's gaze. These are the spaces that anchor us, reflecting our shared challenges, concealed dreams, or deferred endeavors. Like us, our homes are in a constant state of flux. The addition of a fresh plant, a reshuffled living area, newly adorned walls, or a nook repurposed for an incoming family member — these spaces evolve in sync with us. If you haven’t considered wine clubs or wine subscription services, you may be able to save yourself some time and money! Many wineries around the world offer the option to join their wine club or to participate in a wine subscription plan. These clubs often give you access to exclusive wines and events before the public, discounts on future purchases, and sometimes even VIP access to their tasting rooms if you choose to visit in person. If you’re looking for a way to support your favorite wineries, while also getting access to exclusive deals and wines, then a wine club is definitely something you want to look into. Why You Should Join a Wine Club
1.
Wine Delivered Right to Your Door
One of the biggest benefits of joining a wine club or subscription service is that it’s extremely convenient. Depending on the winery or the subscription plan you join, you’ll get bottles to cases of wine delivered right to your door without having to leave your house. Wine clubs direct from the wineries typically ship bottles of wine a few times a year, but some subscription plans will ship you new bottles every single month, and they can even curate your case specifically to your tastes. Depending on how much wine you think you’re going to drink, you can modify your plan to ensure that you always have wine on hand for those unexpected gatherings. This is a great way to restock your wine cooler and get to try new wines without ever leaving your home. 52 | LivingLavishlyMag.com

2.
A Great Money Saver
Everyone loves to save some money, especially with today’s economy, and a wine club or subscription plan can do just that! A huge perk of joining a wine club through a winery is that you get club member discounts and pricing. The price of a bottle of wine may be significantly lower for a wine club member than the general public. So, if you buy a lot of wine from the same winery, this could save you a large amount of money over the course of the year. In addition to reduced pricing on bottles of wine, you may also receive discounts on seasonal items, events, and merchandise from the winery. With a wine subscription program, you will often pay less for a case of wine monthly than you would if you were to buy each individual bottle of wine on its own. Depending on how much wine you drink each month, this could be a great way to keep some extra money in your pocket while not having to sacrifice your love of wine.

What’s the Difference Between a Wine Club & a Wine Subscription? We’ve talked about both Wine Clubs and Wine Subscription services, and while they may seem to be the same thing, they can be very different. The phrase Wine Club and Wine Subscription are sometimes used interchangeably depending on the context they are used in, so it’s important to understand what you are getting yourself into and what the benefits of each of them are. Wine Subscription services are typically third-party services that you subscribe to, and they will send you new wines every week or month, based on your preference. You usually

select the types of wines you enjoy, and they curate your shipment with a variety of wines from different brands and even regions. This gives you the opportunity to try a number of different wines from a variety of different places, not just the same winery. Wine Clubs, on the other hand, are from individual wineries and lean heavily toward giving you discounts, and member exclusives to events and wines. They also send you wine, but it’s going to be wine from that specific winery as opposed wine different wineries around the world.
Access to Exclusives
If you’re looking to join a wine club at your favorite winery, you may also be eligible for exclusive offers and benefits. While many of the wine clubs offer a discount on wine purchases and merchandise, they can also give you access to things that the general public never has access to. Wine club exclusives can range from discounts on certain wines that may not be available to the general public, like older or limited vintages. They can also give you access to events and promotions being offered by the wineries and vineyards. If you’re looking to visit your favorite winery in person, being a member of the winery club oftentimes gives you the ability to enjoy a complimentary tasting during your visit, while also giving you priority seating at the tasting room. If you live near your favorite winery or know you’ll be visiting in the near future, joining the wine club may help you to save a little money during your visit, as well as allow you to take advantage of the perks that come with the membership.
4.
Wine Clubs are a great way to support your favorite winery and gain exclusive access to discounts and events that you might not have had access to otherwise. Both wine clubs and wine subscription services are a great way to stock your wine cooler while getting a chance to try new wines at a discounted price. No matter which option you choose, if you’re a wine lover, these are definitely something you’ll want to look into.
Ability to Try New Wines
If you’re like us, you love trying all different kinds of wines. Whether that’s different varietals or just different brands, the more wine we can get our lips on, the better. The only problem is not everyone is a wine expert. Sure, we know what we like, but that doesn’t always mean we can choose a similar bottle off the shelf and enjoy it. In addition to saving you money and getting you access to perks, Wine clubs, and wine subscription services can deliver new wines and even wine samples right to your door based on wines that you know you already enjoy. While wine clubs through the wineries may be a little more limited in their selections, due to them only producing the types of wine they produce, wine subscription services can take into account other types and brands of wines that you like, and cater your next shipment around those. This means that you’ll get the opportunity to try other types of wine and other brands of wines that you may never have even heard of. This is a great way to branch out and discover what may end up being your new favorite! Autumn/Winter 2023 | 53

Revolutionizing Agritourism Farmstead ED pioneers the ‘Table to Farm’ movement
“Table to Farm” was conceived by Lynette Sonne (left) during the creation of her passion-driven venture, Farmstead ED.
By Camille DeVaul
M
ost likely, you are well-acquainted with the term “Farm to Table,” especially if you reside in San Luis Obispo County, where it is common to see eateries promoting dishes that embody this concept, proudly backing local producers. However, is “Table to Farm” a term that’s crossed your path? This innovative expression was conceived by Lynette Sonne during the creation of her passion-driven venture, Farmstead ED. Consider Farmstead ED your liaison between farm and consumer. This freshly designated nonprofit serves as a bridge connecting local farmers, artisans, and consumers, thereby nurturing the agri-tourism sector within the county. In 2019, the initiative led to the establishment of the San Luis Obispo County Farm Trail, a network that includes close to 30 local producers and craftsmen spread across the county. As a fifth-generation native of Paso Robles with a family history steeped in farming, Lynette’s inherent passion and esteem for locally-sourced produce were practically ingrained from birth. “I grew up with horses. Agriculture has always been a part of my roots, part of my soul,” says Lynette. Traveling the country and bouncing around the world, Lynette grew to have a greater love for her hometown and its access to fresh products and goods.
Hosting gatherings for friends and family featuring dishes crafted from local produce sparked Lynette’s epiphany that eventually led to the birth of Farmstead ED. This revelation struck particularly while she was on a horseback ride at a friend’s ranch in Adelaide. She was taken aback by the number of her acquaintances unaware of the bounty offered by local agriculture. Motivated by this, Lynette initiated Farmstead ED in 2014, envisioning it as a conduit to reverse the journey — from the consumer’s table back to the farm. 60 | LivingLavishlyMag.com

“I love to entertain,” Lynette said. “I love to have friends and family at my home, and it’s always about good food as much as it is about good company.”

Experiential learning forms the cornerstone of Farmstead ED’s approach, with its emphasis on conducting classes in authentic farm settings and the open air. These educational series are designed not only to engage participants with direct, hands-on experiences but also typically culminate in a meal crafted from locally grown and produced ingredients, reinforcing the connection between the lessons and the food on the table. “This [Farmstead ED] was a hobby for me,” says Lynette of starting her nonprofit. “This was a passion. I still call it my passion project.” The open-air concept of Farmstead ED garnered more attention for them through the pandemic. More people wanted to be outside and learn more about where their food came from. The farm-to-table idealism took new life and expanded into a thriving industry of agri-tourism. Lynette started Farmstead ED by bringing the “townies” to the farms. Now, she is bringing tourists who are looking to add something different to their SLO County vacation. Every year, Farmstead ED organizes its signature Open Farm Days Weekend, inviting the public on a self-directed exploration of more than 30 farms, ranches, and artisanal food vendors across SLO County, many of which are typically closed to the general public. These local agricultural hubs welcome visitors for an array of activities, including guided tours, workshops, demonstrations, tastings, and other unique experiences that bring agriculture to life. This year, the event spanned from July 14-16, commencing with an inaugural event: the Friday Night Farmer’s Marketplace situated in
Paso Robles Downtown City Park. The funds raised during this gathering were channeled to support the SLO County Farm Trail and The Great AGventure, a yearly educational field day dedicated to agricultural learning for local students. As for what the horizon holds for Farmstead ED, Lynette believes the future is brimming with untapped potential and infinite possibilities, underscoring that “The potential is huge.”
More people wanted to be outside and learn more about where their food came from. The farmto-table idealism took new life and expanded into a thriving industry of agritourism.
Farmstead ED is actively pursuing mentorship opportunities to enhance its proficiency in functioning as a nonprofit, as well as securing funding to sustain its noble quest of converging farmers, creators, and urban dwellers. Their journey is dedicated to knitting these diverse groups into a cohesive community, nurturing understanding and cooperation among them. But no matter what the future holds, Lynette says, “I want to continue to grow and highlight the magic that our local farms have.” To learn more about Farmstead ED, visit farmsteaded.com Autumn/Winter 2023 | 63

Unveiling Passion & Persistence Local women artists redefine creative expression By Christianna Marks

n the vibrant artistic realms of San Luis Obispo County, four women are challenging the conventions of creativity. Zoya Dixon, with her dynamic shapes, Staley Pearl, through her canvases rich with emotion, Chloe Joy Evers, with her enchanting metalwork, and Jenna Hartzell, through her harmonious digital florals, are quietly crafting more than mere art. They are meticulously weaving a tapestry where each stroke, contour, and pixel embodies the essence of passion and resilience. Their collective work, subtle yet profound, serves as a gentle reminder of the quiet power of creativity.

Zoya Dixon Artist Zoya Dixon journeyed from Chicago to establish her roots in Templeton, where she and her family now call home. Despite not following a conventional artistic path, she has boldly defied expectations, crafting paintings that are as unique as her journey. “I have always been drawn to art and creativity, even as a young child,” added Zoya. “Art has always been something I’ve been drawn back to, especially with the flexibility of making my own schedule and being my own boss.” Zoya’s artistic style underwent a profound transformation following her visit to Las Vegas’s Seven Magic Mountains, an
installation by Ugo Rondinone. This experience ignited her passion for utilizing vivid hues and layering forms in her work. A significant evolution in her artistry occurred upon the serendipitous reconnection with her brother, marking a new collaborative chapter in her creative journey. “We met two years ago. He’s also artistic, so we started to collaborate where he does a graffiti background or some lettering in the background, and then I’m doing the stacks on top,” stated Zoya. S taley Pearl Immersed in the world of art from her earliest days, Staley Pearl grew up under the creative wing of her artist mother. However, it was the poignant passing of her mother nine years ago that became the catalyst for Staley to embark on her own artistic voyage, expressing her journey through the medium of painting. “I inherited all of her paints, and I just started painting,” said Staley. “It just felt like a normal way of grieving frankly and a good way to connect with her, and then I really started to enjoy it.” Now Staley, who grew up in Tennessee before making her way to Atascadero, is doing art full-time. In fact, she loves to create art that is specific to Atascadero. 70 | LivingLavishlyMag.com
“I think Atascadero is more beautiful than people give it credit for,” she added. Staley advocates for everyone harboring a curiosity for painting to give it a chance, reflecting on her own deep affection for the craft that has blossomed over time. “I hope to encourage people to do it for the sake of doing it, because it’s really, it’s awesome. It’s nice to have a world that’s a little more beautiful,” Staley concluded. You can find more of Staley’s work on her website at staleythepearl.com.

Chloe Joy Evers Chloe Joy Evers, raised on the Central Coast and daughter of Dale Evers, has been immersed in art since her early years. Yet, it was only post-college that she began to forge her path, sculpting unique pieces that marked the inception of her personal artistic identity. “I grew up around it [art] because my dad’s a sculptor, and I was homeschooled, so I got to go to the shop almost every day and travel and go to art galleries. I think that it’s something that I just had high exposure to my whole life,” Chloe shared.
With five years of experience in metalwork, Chloe has established a personal studio within her garage, a space thoughtfully outfitted for the intricate art of silversmithing. “I work primarily with sterling silver, and in addition to that, I’m working on my first three-dimensional stained glass mosaic sculptures in my garage right now,” she added of the life-sized woman’s bust. Initiated in October of 2022, her distinctive sculpture will soon be adorned with hand-forged stainless steel lilies, a final touch she plans to add upon the mosaic’s completion. Jenna Hartzell Jenna Hartzell embarked on her artistic journey in elementary school, spurred by a desire to get her ears pierced. Her parents set a creative condition: she could only get them pierced if she authored and illustrated a book. “I was like, done! I, of course, did The Little Mermaid or something like that and went with my Grandma to get my ears pierced,” said Jenna.
That pivotal experience awakened in Jenna the realization that art could be more than a passion—it could be a profession. From then on, she was insatiable, sketching on any available surface. She pursued a major in Art History, and her relentless creative spirit guided her to a career in graphic design, harmonizing her need for artistic expression with financial sustainability. In 2020, Jenna’s artistry evolved. Having settled in Atascadero 15 years prior, she acquired an iPad with Procreate, catapulting her into the realm of digital art. She now specializes in exquisite floral designs, with a focus on a series dedicated to birth month flowers. “I think I’m at that point where I’m just scratching the surface of what I want to do creatively, but it feels really good to be creating consistently,” Jenna added. You can find Jenna’s art on her website at honeyjocreativeco.com.

Santa Barbara’s Hotel Californian An iconic retreat redefining luxury in the city’s trendy Funk Zone
W
e are navigating a period of significant change, and Santa Barbara, akin to other top-tier travel locales globally, is right in the midst of this dynamic shift. Presently, the district lying south of the railway tracks and the freeway, known colloquially as “The Funk Zone,” stands out as the pinnacle of style and arguably embodies the quintessential “Southern Californian” spirit, given its rich offerings, aesthetic appeal, and the unique vibe it exudes when you immerse yourself in its environs. This vibrant neighborhood is a melting pot where sporty lifestyles, beachside relaxation, artistic expression, and a legacy of affluence and classic Hollywood glamour seamlessly converge. Positioned at its core, the Hotel Californian — an architectural composite of The Californian Building, The State Building, and The Mason Building — retains its majestic allure while simultaneously capturing the freshness of the ocean breeze that wafts in from the nearby shores.

Constructed in 1925, the property plays a crucial role in preserving the quintessential Santa Barbara dream. While the city has evolved beyond the nostalgic “Santa Barbara of yesteryears” known to previous generations, the hotel captivates with panoramic views of the ocean and mountains, offering a glimpse behind the curtain of the Funk Zone’s transformative energy. This transformation is marked by an upsurge of eclectic winery tasting rooms, a burgeoning international culinary scene, and unique retail outlets. Amidst these changes, the enduring presence of Stearns Wharf — California’s oldest operational wharf — provides a comforting touchstone, affirming the city’s heritage and continued allure as a prototypical Californian weekend getaway.
The Hotel Californian, in It remains at its current iteration, opened its doors to great fanfare in 2017. In once a visual 2023, it remains at once a visual representation representation of what Santa Barbara was in the 20th century of what Santa and what it will become in this Barbara was one. A lot of the buzz with the hotel’s re-opening came from the in the 20th transformation executed by interior century and designer Martyn Lawrence Bullard, who juxtaposed the Spanish what it will Colonial Revival architecture of become in the era with smart Moroccan influences. Bullard recognized that this one. the hotel was a product of 1920s Hollywood, setting the scene for stars and elites to enjoy exclusive access to peak California culture. To keep it relevant for discerning travelers a century later, he made a conscious decision to avoid the familiar Santa Barbara blue/white/seafoam hotel color scheme and opt for mostly black, white, gold, and bright earth tones and Art Decoinspired accents and fixtures to connect the two ‘20s decades. Bullard’s procurement of over one million handcrafted tiles from Morocco got a lot of attention, but interiors remain fresh because of the curated furnishings, fine amenities, top-tier bedding and sheets, and restraint with the occasional “pops” of color. What makes it so inviting in 2023—even as the city evolves— are exclusive features from a perfectly appointed fitness room to the Majorelle Spa’s inclusion of a Moroccan hammam, a rooftop deck, and pool in the second building, and Djinn, the lobby-adjoining Moroccan-inspired library lounge serving up craft cocktails and evening entertainment. The star attraction at Djinn is Devon Espinosa, who refined his cocktail crafting technique at West Hollywood’s innovative The Church Key bar. 76 | LivingLavishlyMag.com

Hotel Californian’s signature tasting room, The Society: State & Mason, offers pours and flights of wines from the extensive Foley Family portfolio.
As Santa Barbara remains a wine lover’s paradise, the Hotel Californian’s location is not only ideal for exploring the many tasting rooms of the Funk Zone... it’s a part of the action. At the corner of the main building, the hotel’s own The Society: State & Mason regularly offers pours and flights of wines from the extensive Foley Family portfolio along with small plates from Executive Chef Travis Watson. While full-service restaurant Blackbird has become a guest and local favorite, as well as a bigger showcase for Watson’s talents, the hotel and restaurant stage regular wine dinners with Foley’s better vineyards and winemakers to dive deeper into the nuances of the vineyards’ bounties and terroir. The hotel’s Moroccan theme of the property continues across the street on Mason with the Goat Tree restaurant, which mixes Santa Barbara’s eternal coffee house culture and baked goods with a rotation of oven-fresh pastries and baked goods, coldpressed juices, and a full breakfast menu that includes a hearty and authentic shakshuka (a skillet breakfast with poached eggs in a rich, spicy tomato sauce than can be stopped up with fresh pita), a fresh spin on the classic smoked salmon entree, and other surprises.
