Ask the

Pharmacist

My friend refuses influenza vaccination because he insists he "got the flu" after receiving the flu shot in the past. What can I tell him?

T

here are several reasons why this misconception

PUBLISHER/EDITOR Hayley Mattson BUSINESS AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT Nicholas Mattson

continues to persist:

• Less than 1 percent of people who are vaccinated with the injectable vaccine develop flu-like symptoms, such as

mild fever and muscle aches, after vaccination. This is more common the first time someone receives a flu shot. These side effects are not the same as having influenza. • Protective immunity doesn't develop until one to two weeks after vaccination. Some people who get vaccinated later in the season (December or later) may be infected with influenza shortly afterward. These late vaccinees develop influenza because they were exposed to someone with the virus before they became immune. It is not the result of the vaccination.

CREATIVE DIRECTOR Elissa Linick ADVERTISING DIRECTOR Linda Perr y SALES Anthony McDemas Kaleb Rich-Harris, Dorie Leo

• For many people, "the flu" is any illness with fever, cold symptoms, or gastrointestinal symptoms. If they get any viral illness, they may blame it on flu vaccine or think they got "the flu" despite being vaccinated. The vaccine only protects against certain influenza viruses, not all. • Influenza vaccination is our best protection against influenza

disease; however, some people who are vaccinated will still get influenza illness despite vaccination. While vaccine effectiveness can vary, recent studies show that flu vaccination reduces the risk of flu illness by between 40 and

Readers From our

Calabasas Style Magazine receives many phone calls, emails, Instagram comments, and Facebook posts from our readers. We would like to share some of them with you.

You guys did a wonderful job with our editorial! My hubby and I really love working with you all. — Cristina I feel blessed to have known Marvin as a friend, business associate, and of late, my photography teacher. Other photo classmates expressed their sympathy, saying, “His passing is a great loss to the photographic and artistic community.” Marvin took with him knowledge and skills lost to the profession. — Carol I’m sorry to see the news about Marvin. He was a great guy, and we had photography in common, of course. — Bernie Thank you for the great coverage of our Sky Full of Stars Gala. The photos were beautiful. — Kevin I am so sorry to hear about Marvin. I am devastated at this loss. He was such a good, kind soul. A talented artist of photography. An amazing ability to capture the moment while always making people feel comfortable and beautiful in their own skin. He surely did that at many an Or Ami gathering. My condolences to the Calabasas Style team. May his soul be bound up with the Eternal Soul of the Universe.

— Rabbi Paul Kipnes

MOTOR4TOYS 20 YEARS OF GIVING Written and photographed by Steve Geldman In 2003, Dustin Troyan, CEO of Connected Media Group, had a friendly gathering of cars each Sunday outside a coffee shop in Woodland Hills called Cars & Coffee. An idea came to him: With the holidays approaching, why not help the underprivileged children in our community by bringing brand-new toys to the next Cars & Coffee? Motor4Toys, Troyan’s registered charitable foundation, was born. Today it is the largest automotive-related toy drive in the country. Over $6M of toys have been distributed throughout California to date—100 percent of it charitable with zero going to salaries. On December 3 this year, over 60 volunteers and thousands of fans descended upon the Pierce College parking lot and a record number of gifts were donated, including over 160 new bicycles. John Popoch, deputy chief of staff with L.A.’s 3rd District, presented Motor4Toys with a certificate of recognition to Troyan and Scott Stanley, GM of Porsche Woodland Hills and Motor4Toys sponsor. Happy 75 Anniversary NCL! th

n 1925, a group of women in Los Angeles who were interested in philanthropy work organized themselves as the Charity League. This trailblazing group paved the way for what is now the National Charity League San Fernando Valley Chapter, working with the American Red Cross, making baby layettes, and delivering food baskets to needy families during the holidays.

Since December 1, 1948, when the National Charity League San Fernando Valley Chapter received its official article of incorporation, the philanthropic group of mothers and daughters has made an indelible mark on the community through its unwavering commitment to charitable giving, raising over $3.5 million and averaging over 12,000 hours of hands-on service annually to its philanthropy partners. These contributions have supported a wide range of initiatives, from education and healthcare to social services, ensuring that those in need receive the assistance they deserve. With a mission focused on fostering the mother-daughter relationship through philanthropy, leadership, and cultural activities, the San Fernando Valley Chapter has not only touched the hearts of its members but has made a profound impact on the community it serves. Leila Marsden Barth, 2023–2024 Chapter president, shares, “Our 75th anniversary is a testament to the dedication, passion, and resilience of our members and the incredible support of our community. We are immensely proud of the impact we have made over the years and are eager to continue our mission of service for many more years to come.” As part of the anniversary celebrations, the San Fernando Valley Chapter will continue to address evolving community needs, ensuring that its legacy of service inspires future generations. The San Fernando Valley Chapter currently has over 236 active and 319 sustainer members who provide hands-on volunteer service and financial support for 10 philanthropic organizations in the community. The membership drive for the 2024–2025 year begins January 15. n

Additionally, she highlighted her “4-P” priorities, including public safety, programming, park space, and prosperity, with a special emphasis on her engagement goals, which include growing the number of residents and businesses that are signed up for emergency alerts and engaged on social media and that know who to reach out to for specific city concerns. Mayor Weintraub looks forward to working as a city council member with her fellow colleagues Mayor Pro-Tem Peter Kraut, Councilmember Ed Albrecht, Councilmember James Bozajian, and Councilmember David Shapiro. CALABASAS ROTARY SERVES SENIORS ON THANKSGIVING Photography by Linda Perry Calabasas Rotary, in partnership with the Sagebrush Cantina, hosted its 33rd Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for Seniors on Thanksgiving Day. Calabasas Rotarians, along with members of local Girl Scout and Brownie troops, were on hand to greet the seniors who came from various assisted living centers, senior centers, and their own homes. Calabasas Rotary President Daniele Della Gala welcomed the seniors and gave special thanks to all the volunteers who helped to prepare and serve over 600 traditional Thanksgiving dinners. Rotary and community members donated this year’s turkeys along with Woodland Hills resident John Poole of Eastern Poultry, who has donated hundreds of turkeys over the years. Sagebrush Cantina owner Donal Tavey and his family also participated in serving the seniors, while managers Mario Romero and Trino Franco oversaw the cooking crew. The mission statement for the Calabasas Rotary is “service above self,” which was perfectly demonstrated on this special Thanksgiving Day.

Crafting a life beyond their dreams By Lori Berezin and Hayley Mattson Photography by Emily Scher

estled among the hills of Calabasas, Gina Michelle and her husband, Koko Keledjian, enjoy a picturesque view of the city while building a life they love and raising their two beautiful children, 11-year-old son Dezi and 9-year-old daughter Lucci. Their shared love for Calabasas, real estate, and each other brought them together over 16 years ago.

Gina, originally from Big Bear, relocated with her family to Fallbrook in San Diego County, where she completed her high school education. Her journey eventually led her to Los Angeles, where she pursued a degree at Cal State University Northridge on an acting scholarship. Meanwhile, Koko’s story began in Beirut, Lebanon, where he was born. His family’s life took a dramatic turn when they fled the war-torn region when he was only 4 years old. Despite being born on opposite sides of the world, fate led them to meet and fall in love in Southern California. “We often say that we have no intention of moving any further east than where we currently reside,” Koko remarks. “Once you come to this side, I don’t think you ever go back! Gina, being a real estate broker, has relocated many families from other areas of the Valley and Los Angeles to the Calabasas area over the years. It’s the community and safety of the Calabasas area that reminds Gina of living in a small town like the one where she was raised.” Gina adds, “We cherish the fact that our community is filled with families, both parents and children alike, who are dedicated professionals actively engaged in their kids’ schools, sports, and activities. It’s like receiving a private education in a public setting, something we greatly value. Our neighborhood is a haven for like-minded families. We’re particularly excited about the ongoing development in the West Valley, from The Village to the new Rams practice facility. Not only is it a secure place for families, but it’s also poised for substantial growth in the coming years.” Gina serves as a real estate broker at The Agency Calabasas, bringing her extensive experience to the table. She obtained her real estate license in 2005 and successfully ran her own real estate business for many years before becoming a valuable part of The Agency’s team in

2018. Currently, she leads a high-volume team in partnership with George Ouzounian, with a primary focus on the vibrant area spanning from Calabasas to Studio City. Her influence in the residential real estate sector earned her the title of “Leader of Influence” by Los Angeles Business Journal in 2022 and 2023, and she was recognized as one of L.A. Magazine’s 2023 Real Estate Allstars. Additionally, Gina holds the distinction of being named one of the Top 100 Most Influential Real Estate Agents in Southern California. In 2005, Koko’s passion for real estate investing and development ignited, leading him to make a career shift from his successful chiropractic business to pursue luxury home building. He recently completed a magnificent 9,000-square-foot home in Country Ridge Estates, a boutique Calabasas development featuring eight new-build residences—with Koko’s being the largest and most modern design slant of the bunch. Gina and Koko are also building their own family home in Country Ridge Estates, nestled in Malibu Canyon. Together, they both agree that their most cherished achievement remains their family.

Their son, Dezi, recently completed his elementary school journey at Chaparral in Calabasas and has embarked on a new chapter at Chaminade Middle School. Gina enthusiastically shares, “We can’t speak highly enough about

“WE CHERISH THE FACT THAT OUR COMMUNITY IS FILLED WITH FAMILIES... DEDICATED PROFESSIONALS ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN THEIR KIDS’ SCHOOLS, SPORTS, AND ACTIVITIES.”

Dezi’s educational experience within the Calabasas public school system. Our decision to enroll him at Chaminade was motivated by its strong focus on sports, particularly basketball, which he adores. Dezi has made it onto the 6th-grade basketball team, and Koko, who coaches basketball for the Calabasas Rec league, has been his coach since he was just 3 years old.” Their daughter, Lucci, faces the challenge of a rare seizure disorder that, thankfully, has been wellmanaged for several years. Additionally, Lucci falls on the autism spectrum and attends a specialized school and class tailored to her needs. Both Koko and Gina are actively involved in epilepsy research and support Children’s Hospital Los Angeles in their efforts. In addition, the couple actively engages with other families who are navigating similar health challenges, providing valuable support and guidance in their journeys. If you spend any time with the four of them, Calabasas Style 55

you’ll quickly realize that the love and unity that hold their family together are immeasurable, a true testament to the care and compassion they have for one another. Balancing their bustling careers with family life, they continue to explore the world. “Now that our children are a bit older, we make it a point to prioritize both a significant family trip and a couples’ getaway each year,” Koko shares. “One of our favorite destinations is Paris. Earlier this year, we treated the kids to a memorable visit to Disney World in Orlando and embarked on a European adventure with our closest friends. We place a strong emphasis on both traveling with our kids and enjoying some adult-only trips as well. Our closest friends happen to be couples also immersed in the real estate world, and we all carve out time from our demanding careers to indulge in travel.” Hailing from Big Bear, Gina has a deep love for snow and adds, “We’re skiers and snowboarders. We enjoy taking our kids on boat outings and have a special fondness for camping in Lake Tahoe, where they get to experience it lakeside. Cancun holds a special place in our hearts as that’s where we were married, and we love sharing the beauty of Mexico with our children.” Cl o s e r

Koko frequently indulge in dining experiences at local establishments such as Casaléna. Gina effusively expresses, “The cuisine here is truly exceptional, and the ambiance is captivating. They’ve infused a vibrant and trendy atmosphere right into our neighborhood.” Despite the plethora of tempting dining options nearby, the couple remains committed to their fitness goals and maintaining a regular exercise routine. Shortly after exchanging their vows in 2009, Gina and Koko decided to move from Sherman Oaks to the West Valley, with the goal of starting a family. Their decision to establish roots in the Calabasas area was motivated by the exceptional schools and tight-knit community it provides. Alongside building a fulfilling life together, they wholeheartedly embraced their new surroundings, and today, after many years well-spent, they enjoy living the fruitful life they’ve created in Calabasas. n

The event was a festive preholiday gathering with craft cocktails, delectable food, and an inspirational presentation by Valerie and Jorge Llauro. Alexander Llauro was the honoree of the evening. The 2024 Lamborghini Huracán Sterrato

By Dustin Troyan Photography by Lamborghini

L

eave it to Lamborghini to do something so avantgarde with a supercar—something that many might not understand. But I guess it had to be done. They created an off-road supercar. The Huracán Sterrato is to Lamborghini what the

911 Dakar is to Porsche. However, many might say that Lamborghini took it to the next level with the Sterrato. Paying homage to the Group B Rally era, the Sterrato was built to race around dirt roads, the desert, and dry washes. Yes, in a Lamborghini. Now, would any owner really do that to a Lamborghini? I guarantee you someone will, and it will go viral. You do it because you can, and Lamborghini likes to push the envelope as far as they can and create an offroad supercar. It’s just par for the course. The Sterrato boasts a 5.2-liter V-10, detuned to 602 hp due to air-flow challenges. When you are off-roading, you have to keep dirt and dust out of the engine. The Sterrato has a 3.4-second time to 62 mph and a 160-mph speed limiter due to the “off road tires.” Only 900 examples will be made, and yes, this again will be a collector car that will only go up in value. From Lamborghini: “True to our values as a visionary, bold, and unconventional brand, with the Sterrato, we are breaking new ground in driving sensations,” commented Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini Chairman and CEO. “Presenting the car at Art Basel in Miami reflects how, just like an avant-garde work of art, the Sterrato represents a radical and original interpretation of the super sports car concept, but in terms of performance, the Sterrato belongs in the world’s most dynamic and exciting driving environments.” For more information, visit Lamborghini.com. n 76

People to Watch Lisa Szilagyi President | Program Director | Founding Member

Aurelia Foundation dba Creative Steps Creating a community integration day program for adults with disabilities was a longtime dream of Lisa Szilagyi, whose daughter Emily was born in 1989 with tuberous sclerosis complex. Looking ahead to Emily’s future as an adult with a disability, Lisa’s vision was to create a day program that would meet her needs. Emily’s birth was a turning point in Lisa’s life, triggering a switch in careers from film distribution to working as a volunteer for the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance and then to pursuing a career working first with students and then adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Lisa began her teaching career in 1996 as a paraprofessional at Malibu High School. In 2001, she took over the life skills class and began to pursue her special education credential, which led her to teaching students with moderate to severe disabilities. Lisa was an advocate for including these students in general education classes and in activities and events on campus. She organized the first ever “Disability Awareness Day” at Malibu High School. Over time, Lisa earned an award from the Malibu Special Education Foundation, a Dolphin Award from The Malibu Times, and an award for Special Education Advisor from the Best Buddies Organization.

Today, Creative Steps supports 70 adults with a variety of intellectual and developmental disabilities. The program is 100-percent community based, supporting lifelong learning and skills acquisition. Creative Steps works on daily living and communication and social skills, as well as job training, acquisition, and support. Creative Steps has long waitlists for each location as the number of young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities aging out of their school programs continues to grow.

After a decade of teaching the life skills class at Malibu High, Lisa began having regular discussions with the parents of her students who were wondering what programs were available for their own kids once they “graduated.” After researching other day programs for adults with moderate to severe disabilities and significant support needs, the group found few good options. Most programs would not accept their young adults. The idea of creating a better program led to the formation of The Aurelia Foundation in 2012. In September 2013, their Creative Steps day program officially launched in Santa Monica, with nine young adults. In May of 2014, Creative Steps opened another location in Westlake Village. And in December of 2015, Creative Steps opened a third location in Torrance. 78

Those values shaped Fran’s life choices and career. She developed a passion for working with young people in their journeys to reach potential, discover purpose, and achieve a sense of wellbeing. As a student at UC Berkeley, Fran volunteered in an Oakland neighborhood youth project and continued volunteering throughout her extensive career as an educator and counselor in the Lawndale and Las Virgenes Unified school districts, where she worked in middle and high school in both traditional and alternative settings with diverse student populations. Fran co-authored the Transition Partnership Project curriculum and, through its implementation, successfully guided high school students through their post high school transitions. Eighteen years later, he returned—a changed person—to start his real estate career. What changed him? Years at UC Irvine, UC Davis, and the U.S. Air Force tell only part of the story. In those years, nine of which were spent living overseas, Doug gained the worldview that he credits for both his personal and professional success. He has lived in 10 states and four countries, earned USAF F-111 “Top Gun” honors, experienced life behind the Berlin Wall, attended graduate school, taught economics at the USAF Academy, and cofounded the Colorado Ski School for the Blind. While Doug credits his work ethic and attention to detail to his military service, he owes his real estate expertise to 10 years as EVP and COO of CNA Enterprises, with its $1 billion commercial portfolio. At CNA, Doug honed his asset management, finance, and leasing skills. In this regard, all of Doug’s ventures are sticklers for 24/7 transparency, continuous risk assessment, preventative maintenance, and exhaustive tenant screening. What Doug does is as unique as how he does it. While his asset management for charitable foundations has been widely praised,

While it might seem unexpected that a former USAF “Top Gun” would find happiness settled into a life centered in Calabasas, Malibu, and Westlake Village, it makes perfect sense to Doug. His real estate investments keep him in touch with the nation’s pulse while his local businesses enable him to serve his community. No two days are alike, and most importantly, being local keeps him close to his wife, children, and mother, who just celebrated her 92nd birthday!

it is the returns he has achieved on “value added” real estate investments and his creation of new industries to serve emerging needs that have turned heads. On the investment side, he has made an art form out of “turning sows’ ears into silk purses.” On the property management side, Doug and his wife, Denise, created both the “home management” and “fractional estate management” industries when they realized that everything they were doing to help take care of their parents’ properties was exactly what bi-coastal families, busy executives, and high-net-worth retirees need to properly care for their properties. 82

isteria at Warner Center officially began construction in April, the first step in the final phase of bringing L.A.’s groundbreaking retirement community to life. Less than a year later, the community has seen significant progress both on and off the construction site. Clearing and grading of the 17-acre location is already completed, and the buzz surrounding the Valley’s newest

retirement-living option has never been greater. To date, more than 100 homes have been reserved by pre-construction depositors, and even more future residents are waiting in line for their turns. So, what is it about Wisteria that has sparked the interest of so many seniors? To start, there’s a variety of beautiful homes—ranging from one-bedroom apartments to deluxe penthouse suites, with dozens of floor plans, well-appointed kitchens, spacious balconies, and patios to choose from.

For example, if the faucet drips, a bulb goes out, or a door squeaks, residents can just call the onsite maintenance team and the problem is fixed—and that’s just the start. Residents can also let go of all the everyday expenses and bills, including utilities, taxes, and home insurance costs they may be currently paying at home. The Transformational Benefits of Chair Yoga Cultivate strength safely and comfortably

—————————

C

By Elizabeth Hickox hair yoga offers a safe and accessible way for seniors or those with limited mobility to enhance their strength and balance through a yoga practice. Remaining seated throughout the practice ensures the ability to engage

in exercises comfortably. The advantages of chair yoga encompass easing muscle tension, alleviating chronic pain, reducing stress levels, and enhancing blood circulation. Additionally, it aids in lowering anxiety, managing blood pressure, and safeguarding joints. There are wonderful 30-minute chair yoga routines, led by the engaging instructor Sherry Zak Morris, available for free on YouTube. Sherry not only guides participants through the movements but also explains the health benefits associated with chair yoga. Fitness apps, including Peloton and Apple Fitness+, also offer a variety of on-demand chair yoga routines. When incorporating the seated practice into at-home fitness routines, customization and safety should be paramount. It’s important to tailor the exercises to match individual abilities and range of motion, skipping or modifying any movements that cause discomfort or are too challenging. If fatigue sets in, opt for simpler portions of the routine rather than completing the entire session. Chair yoga routines aren’t only for seniors or those with mobility restrictions. Anyone can participate, making it an enjoyable activity that provides health benefits for all involved. All you need is a sturdy chair that allows your feet to touch the floor. Optionally, a belt, strap, or a long hand towel can be used to assist with stretching. As always, exercise with caution. Comfort should always take precedence. Perform movements slowly and gently, paying close attention to the body. It’s better to do less than risk injury. Follow the instructor’s guidance only to the extent that feels comfortable. Even if it’s only a fraction of the full range of motion or certain movements are skipped, there are still many benefits from the exercises. Over time, flexibility and strength should improve, allowing those with limited mobility to fully engage in the practice. n 100

The Crucial Step Dentists Skip in Smile Makeovers

A

Photography by Bernie B. Villadiego, DDS re you considering a smile makeover or full mouth reconstruction? Imagine investing time and money into a smile makeover, only to experience discomfort, headaches, or jaw pain afterward. Unfortunately, this is the typical experience for many individuals. Most dentists overlook the most crucial factor: evaluating the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), or jaw joint. When considering a smile makeover or full mouth reconstruction, most dentists focus primarily on the appearance

of the teeth. While aesthetics are undoubtedly crucial, overlooking the TMJ can lead to various issues, both dental and systemic. Evaluating the TMJ before embarking on a smile makeover or full mouth reconstruction is essential for several reasons:

DENTAL HEALTH A misaligned TMJ can lead to dental problems, such as teeth grinding, clenching, and uneven wear on teeth. These issues can compromise the longevity of dental work and result in the need for further interventions. Not considering the TMJ during a smile makeover may lead to poor outcomes because it doesn't address jaw joint problems. Dentists must pay attention to the TMJ so the dental work will last. 108

Calabasas Style

PAIN AND DISCOMFORT Problems with the TMJ can cause significant pain and discomfort, such as headaches, jaw pain, and neck pain. These issues can become chronic and impact a person's quality of life. A smile makeover, that does not consider TMJ function may exacerbate

A balanced and functional bite is essential for proper oral health. TMJ problems can lead to an imbalanced bite, which may result in difficulties in chewing, speaking, and even breathing. perfect smile. They can call the Aesthetic Smile Designs office to

Aesthetic Smile Designs 23622 Calabasas Rd., #119 Calabasas 818.341.1345 aestheticsmiledesigns.com

SYSTEMIC EFFECTS The ramifications of TMJ issues are not isolated in the jaw area. Problems in this joint can have far-reaching effects, including muscle tension, sleep disturbances, and even postural issues. These systemic effects can impact an individual's overall health and well-being.

THE IMPORTANCE OF TMJ EVALUATION • Comprehensive care: Understanding the TMJ's function allows dentists to provide more comprehensive and holistic care. Addressing underlying issues with the TMJ can result in a smile makeover that is aesthetically pleasing, functional, and supportive of overall well-being. • Long-term success: Addressing TMJ issues during a smile makeover can ensure the longevity of dental work. It prevents complications, such as teeth misalignment and jaw pain, which might arise without proper TMJ evaluation. • Enhanced patient experience: Patients who receive TMJ evaluations and treatment as part of their smile makeover are more likely to have a positive experience. They are also less likely to suffer discomfort or pain after the procedure. More importantly, the patient's need for future dental work is far less likely, making their investment in a smile makeover worthwhile.

CONCLUSION Paying attention to the TMJ is essential in the quest for the perfect smile. Evaluating the temporomandibular joint before performing a smile makeover or full mouth reconstruction is crucial for the procedure's long-term success and the patient's overall well-being. A holistic approach that combines aesthetics with TMJ functionality can lead to stunning smiles that are beautiful but also healthy and comfortable. Dentists prioritizing TMJ Calabasas Style 109

PACIFIC FESTIVAL BALLET HOSTS SUGAR PLUM SOCIAL Pacific Festival Ballet (PFB) is celebrating 30 years of presenting the traditional holiday classic The Nutcracker. This year’s production once again featured over 100 community dancers joined by Los Angeles-based professionals and New York City Ballet superstars Tiler Peck and Roman Mejia. On November 12, Sherwood Country Club was transformed into the visually stunning “Land of Sweets” for PFB’s annual Sugar Plum Social. Guests were treated to photo opportunities with Clara, arts and crafts, spectacular raffle baskets, sweet treats, and a mini-Nutcracker Suite performed by PFB’s pre-professional students. Each year, the social event raises funds to help underwrite their extravagant production. It also provides the opportunity for 2,000 local school children to attend a field trip to the Bank of America Performing Arts Center in Thousand Oaks to see The Nutcracker in December and Noah’s Ark next May. Sharing the performing arts with the extended community and nurturing future artists is a continued focus for Pacific Festival Ballet. Valentine’s Recipes

Nobu’s Miso-Marinated Black Cod Recipe ————————— Ingredients 1/4 cup sake 1/4 cup mirin 1/4 cup white miso paste 3 tablespoons granulated sugar 4 (8-ounce) black cod fillets

Instructions Two to three days beforehand, make the miso marinade and marinate the fish. Bring the sake and mirin to a boil in a medium saucepan over high heat. Boil for 20 seconds to evaporate the alcohol. Turn the heat down to low, add the miso paste, and whisk. When the miso has dissolved completely, turn the heat up to high again and add the sugar, whisking constantly to ensure that the sugar doesn’t burn on the bottom of the pan. Remove from heat once the sugar is fully dissolved. Cool to room temperature. Pat the black cod fillets thoroughly dry with paper towels. Slather the fish with the miso marinade and place in a nonreactive dish or bowl and cover tightly with plastic wrap. Leave to marinate in the refrigerator for 2 to 3 days. To cook the fish: Preheat oven to 400°F. Heat an oven-proof skillet over high heat on the stovetop. Lightly wipe off any excess miso clinging to the fillets, but don’t rinse it off. Film the pan with a little oil, then place the fish skin-side-up on the pan and cook until the bottom of the fish browns and blackens in spots, about 3 minutes. Flip and continue cooking until the other side is browned, 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer to the oven and bake for 5 to 10 minutes, until fish is opaque and flakes easily.

Caviar Pie ————————— Ingredients

6 hard-cooked eggs, finely chopped 3 tablespoons mayonnaise 1 large onion, finely chopped 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened 2/3 cup sour cream 1 3½-ounce jar black lumpfish caviar Thin lemon wedges Parsley sprigs

Instructions Drain liquid from caviar. Leave caviar in jar. Combine eggs and mayonnaise. Spread in bottom of a well-greased 8-inch springform pan. Sprinkle with onion. Combine cream cheese and sour cream; beat until smooth. Drop tablespoonfuls onto onion and spread evenly until smooth. Cover with foil or plastic wrap and chill for at least 3 hours. Just before serving, top with caviar and spread to edges of pan. Run a knife around the sides to loosen pie, then remove pan. Arrange lemon slices in the center in a pinwheel fashion. Add parsley sprigs. Serve with brown pumpernickel cocktail bread or crisp unsalted crackers.

Rhône-Style Wines

Exploring the Elegance of 146

Calabasas Style

By Elizabeth Hickcox Wine, like art, defies boundaries, transcending geography and culture, enchanting the senses with tales of terroir, history, and artistry. Amid this oenological tapestry, Rhône-style wines emerge as a testament to a French legacy, now flourishing in California. This journey unravels the essence of Rhônestyle wines, from their roots in the Rhône Valley to their vibrant evolution in the Californian landscape.

The Rhône Valley: A wine paradise The Rhône Valley, nestled in southeastern France, is the birthplace of Rhône-style wines, divided into the Northern and Southern Rhône subregions, each contributing to the wines’ diversity.

Grape varieties Rhône-style wines are defined by a variety of grape types, both red and white, offering unique character. Key grape varieties include: Syrah (Shiraz): Dominant in the Northern Rhône, Syrah boasts deep color, rich black fruit flavors, and peppery notes, showcased in appellations like Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie. Grenache: Southern Rhône’s star red grape, valued for ripe red fruit flavors, silky texture, and Mediterranean adaptability, forming the foundation of famous blends in Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas. Mourvèdre: Often used in conjunction with Syrah and Grenache, Mourvèdre adds structure and complexity, contributing dark fruit, earthy, and spicy characteristics.

FAMILY RESCUE CENTER FOOD DRIVE The Family Rescue Center in Canoga Park was in full swing on Saturday, November 18, as staff and a huge team of volunteers provided 585 families and over 2,500 individuals with a complete Thanksgiving meal. Founded as “Rescate” (Spanish for rescue) in 1998 as a ministry of Canoga Park Presbyterian Church, Family Rescue Center became an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2003. Their partnership with the West Valley Food Pantry provides much of their nonperishable food as sourced though the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. The turkeys and fresh produce came from their own food purchases, local grocery stores, and local donors. The Family Rescue Center serves individuals and families in the West San Fernando Valley by providing food, clothing, vocational training assistance, and essential services. Their goal is to sustain people in desperate circumstances, empowering them to achieve personal and financial independence. For more information, visit rescatefamilycenter.org.

MALIBU SAR TRAIL RUN FUNDRAISER On October 22, Malibu Search and Rescue (SAR) hosted its 2nd Annual Trail Race Fundraiser at Malibu Creek State Park. SoCal Trails put on a successful event with runners from all over the region plus local businesses both sponsoring the event and setting up booths for the post-race festival. The community got to meet the team that is responsible for the Santa Monica Mountains and responds at any hour of the day and night, 365 days a year. Local small businesses showed their support with donations and giveaways for the runners. Founded in 1977, the Malibu SAR Team is an all-volunteer organization tasked with responding to lost hikers, injured hikers, missing persons, vehicles over the side, aircraft accidents, wildfires, animal rescues, and mass casualty incidents. Team members volunteer their time and efforts to help others, and the team does not charge for rescues. Malibu SAR is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation. Visit malibusar.org for ways to donate and support the team. 152
