How wolves and dogs evolved All canids are believed to have evolved from a group of
miacid
prehistoric carnivores known as miacids, that lived between 62 and 33 million years ago. Recent research suggests that several different types of wolf-like canids appeared about two to three million years ago, and these eventually evolved into the wolves we know today. The Grey wolf has been
wolf
around for a million years or so now, and it most likely came from Asia.
Wolf fact The Dire wolf was an early species of wolf in North America that died out around the end of the last Ice Age, around 10,000 to 15,000 years ago. It’s thought that the Dire wolf became extinct because of climate change and lack of food. It would have competed with Sabre-toothed tigers for prey.
