I can carry out subtractions involving negative numbers

Develop fluency Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding an appropriate positive number.

Worked example a 12 – (–15) a 12 – (–15) = 12 + 15 = 27

b 23 – (–17) b 23 – (–17) = 23 + 17 = 40

1 Use a number line to work these out. a 2 – (–5) b 4 – (–1)

c 7 – (–4)

d 6 – (–8)
