APPLYING Project work It is important with this project to provide clear instructions and parameters. Discuss in advance where they can find the information about training courses provided by the local college or university. You could organise a visit from someone from the institution who could talk about the training courses they provide and who funds them. They could provide information on government sponsored training. The students need to outline the benefits to firms in the area that might arise from these training schemes and the impact of training. Students in their research need to examine what the purposes of these courses are. The extension questions ask the student to analyse why some training courses are more effective than others at increasing output in the economy. Talk this through with the student and agree a structure to this task. They could consider what courses might have an impact on increasing output. These could be courses that equip people with the skills that firms need. Students will then consider the courses they identified earlier and show whether there is a good match. This could be in the form of a short report.

Expected outcomes •

Students identify the range of courses provided by the local college or university.

Students identify government sponsored training.

Students will go through some of the courses which they have researched and what the aims and objectives of those courses are. In general, any training will improve human capital which will make workers more efficient and productive. This makes the firms they work for more competitive which could lead to increasing the production of goods and services.

Students will discuss the impact on the country. If the skills of the workforce increase productivity, then this will make domestic firms more competitive. It could lead to an increase in economic growth and see standards of living rise.

Extension students produce a short report mapping courses to skills that firms need.

Knowledge check questions Ask students to complete the knowledge check questions at the end of Unit 1.2 in the Student’s Book.

Checking progress Ask students to complete the Check your progress section in the Student’s Book.
