Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised Teach and practise: Phase 3 and 4 read new words Notes Reception Terms: Spr1, 2; Sum 1, 2 Teach: New word For each word: ◦ Ask the children to sound-talk each grapheme and then blend to read the word aloud. ◦ Point to each grapheme and then sweep beneath the word to signal blending. Read the word together. Give a contextualising sentence or definition for the word, if needed. Use the example definitions and sentences on the weekly grid, if needed. Use the sound button side of the word cards because these are new words for the children. Use minimal language to ensure the children can focus on the reading of the words. Pointing to the digraphs should be pacey. When reading the words, ensure lots of practice by asking all the children, then individuals/rows of children, and then all the children again, to read the words. Quick review Shufﬂe the cards. Tell the children to read the words on the cards without sounding out. Show each card and sweep beneath the word to signal blending. Ensure there is enough time for the children to read each word. Repeat. Watch the children carefully to ensure they are all blending in their heads. (Children will often mouth the sounds to themselves at this stage.) Encourage the children to indicate – with a silent gesture (e.g. nodding their head, thumbs up) – when they are ready to blend. Teach and practise: Read a tricky word Notes Reception Terms: Spr1, 2; Sum 1, 2 Show the tricky word on a card. Read the decodable parts of the word. Point to the ‘tricky bit’ and tell the children the sound that this grapheme makes. Model reading the word. Ask the children to read the word a few times independently. Ask the children which words have the /ee/ sound (sees Eek), which has the long /er/ sound (Nipper) and which has the long /ar/ sound. (sharp) • Challenge the children to find the word with the short /oo/ sound. A range of genres including poetry, narrative non-fiction and gripping stories means that every reader can find something that interests them and ensures that all children are exposed to a broad and rich reading diet.

How did Zheng Yi Sao become How did Yi Sao become so powerful? so powerful?

That’s a good question, because she started life as an outcast. She was born as Shi Yang to a family of “boat people” known as Tankas around 1775 in Guangdong, China. The Tankas lived on their boats at sea and survived by selling fish. In 1801 she married the pirate lord Zheng Yi and her name changed to Zheng Yi Sao, meaning “Wife of Zheng Yi”. As his wife, she demanded equal control of his pirate fleet and half the loot.

Together they built a powerful pirate empire. They plundered their way across Southeast Asia. They attacked Chinese ships carrying silk and spices. They also targeted foreign ships and held the sailors to ransom. Any boat passing through their waters had to pay a fee. And they even raided the coastal towns – no one was safe from them.

Then in 1807 her husband died, and Zheng Yi Sao took over.

The DfE Reading Framework has a focus on the importance of fluency and states that by the end of Year 6 children’s reading and writing should be fluent enough to meet the demands of the Year 7 curriculum, across all subjects. It also stresses that fluency should be taught as a separate skill and is necessary for successful reading comprehension.

To support the teaching of fluency, free support materials are available on the Little Wandle website:

Every Fluency book has bonus material, which offers a chance to go deeper into different aspects of the book.
