Paper 1, Section A
Student Book: pp. 8–9 Worksheet: 1.1 PPT: 1.1 Workbook links: Unit 1.1, pp. 5–6
Introducing the skills Students should work alone to read the introductory sections on page 8, describing the different types of personal writing. To prepare for Question 1, ask them to draw up a list of biographies and autobiographies that they know of. These can be about sporting legends, movie stars and pop celebrities, politicians or people who have led remarkable lives in different ways. Can students think of any books that have been published in the form of diaries or journals? Give extra challenge by asking students to make suggestions about why each person from the biographies/autobiographies they have listed has had their personal ‘story’ told in this way.
Developing the skills Look at Question 2. Discuss with students how the people listed had a specific reason for writing their autobiography or for being written about. Ask students to make a separate list of all the people that they would like to read about in a biography or autobiography, giving reasons for their choices. Reinforce the difference between narrative (thoughts and feelings) and non-narrative (facts and statistics) information to prepare for Question 3. Students should use Worksheet 1.1 to develop their ideas linked to this question and writing about a specific event.
Give extra support by referring back to Question 1 in the Student Book to remind students of examples of starter sentences.
Plenary
At the end of the task, get students to swap books to read each other’s completed paragraphs. They should try and identify the type of personal text it is by the way it has been written.

Stage 7
PPT
Before students write the full paragraph for Question 4, they could practise thinking about and writing in all four different styles. Show them the slides in PowerPoint 1.1 as a summary reminder, and then ask them to create starter sentences for the table on slide 3. This will help them decide which form to use for their full paragraph.
