Spelling Unit 1
Adding suffixes beginning with vowels to words of more than one syllable A suffix is a group of letters added to the end of a root word. When you add a suffix starting with a vowel to a word of more than one syllable, the spelling rule depends on whether the last syllable is stressed or not. If the last syllable is stressed, double the final consonant. For example: garden + er = gardener, but begin + er = beginner.
