Example 12 Work out the volume and capacity of this shape.

2m 3m

Give your answer in litres. The shape is made up of two cuboids with measurements 7 m by 3 m by 2 m and 2 m by 3 m by 6 m.

6m

V = lwh so the volume of the shape is given by:

8m

V = (7 × 3 × 2) + (2 × 3 × 6) = 42 + 36 = 78 m3

7m

As 1 m3 = 1000 litres, the capacity of the shape = 78 × 1000 litres. Capacity = 78 000 litres
