COMMUNITY CATS PROGRAM

The Colleton River Community Cats program has accomplished amazing things in the seven years since our inception in 2007! In that time, our volunteers have handled 89 stray cats and kittens that had found themselves in the plantation; all abandoned, lost and looking for food. Of that number, we have found homes for 27 cats – two are currently awaiting adoption – a very successful adoption rate of over 30%. Due to our quick response, whenever a stray cat appears we have not had a litter of kittens born in the plantation since 2009. Our goal is to quickly capture any newcomers and assess their suitability for adoption with the help of our local shelters. With the help of the Palmetto Animal League and Hilton Head Humane Association, we have been able to place

many cats in the PAL/HHHA adoption programs as well as take advantageof their low-cost spay and neuter programs. Many cats that we encounter as strays are deemed unsuitable for adoption because they have had little human contact and have become frightened and unapproachable. After spaying or neutering, testing, and vaccinating, these cats are released back into the area in which they were found. Our team of volunteers monitors and feeds in various locations in the plantation and with some very kind residents who feed the

outside community cats on their property. Our volunteers throughout the plantation are currently feeding 25-30 cats, 365 days of the year. The total number of released cats is declining as we are able to find adoptive homes for many of them. Our CR Community Cats program is a registered 501-c-3 charity. With the help of members’ contributions to our charitable fund, we purchase dry cat food, provide vaccines, spaying and neutering, and veterinary care for injuries if feasible. Members who would like to help support our program can make donations to our non-profit fund. Checks should be made payable to Colleton River Feral Cat Fund. Please mail donations to the attention of Althea Hicks, 3 Laurel Hill Court, Bluffton, SC 29910. You will receive an acknowledgement letter for your tax preparation.
